Copper theft - pipes stolen right out of homes

We're having an unbelievable problem with copper theft in our community. In fact, we've had copper stolen out of the bottom of four houses in the last 10 days in *my* neighborhood of about 300 people. In the last six months, it's probably been more than 20 copper thefts.

On a city-wide scale, it's even a bigger problem. My church had its copper ripped out on a Saturday night, as did my friend's church. In fact, I know of four area churches that had the copper ripped off. In the process of stealing the copper from the central a/c units, they destroy the air conditioner.

We have an alarm system, fenced yard, crazy dog, lots of locks, so I hope we're safe but I'm wondering if anyone else (in the country) is having this kind of trouble. This is just sickening. The most recent theft was this weekend and the cops were called to the house (which had copper stolen out of the basement, the furnace and the a/c). They found fingerprints all over the basement window, but refused to dust for prints. They told the homeowner, "Wouldn't do any good anyway."

I don't know how we're gonna catch these people with the cops' attitude.

Anyway - anyone else?

I'm dreaming of the day I can move out to the country. Here in Hampton Roads (Southeastern Virginia) if you don't lock down and lock up everything you own, it'll get stolen right out from under you.
