painting over primer

Hi there, I hope someone can help me? I had few problem with my living room wall although my house is very new but I wanted to change wall colour. When I coloured my wall,it bubbled and I tried hundreds of things to sort it out. Later I though it has lining paper and took off the bit from the wall but then thought I took off the skim. Still I don't know what it is. Anyways, I have now plastered the bit and now as mentioned on the plaster we are suppose to prime it before colouring. I just wanted to know is it ok to prime on the other coloured wall? so that I can have even colour through out. My wall has gloss white colour and I want the same for whole wall. I can prime and paint on the plastered bit only but I think I should re do the whole colouring to have a even colour through out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Prime the entire wall, then paint.

Thanks for your advice.
I primed on a small painted wall to see how it goes. This surface had bubble before but when i primed to see what it does,the bubbles came up again. I think i cant do anything for these bubbles now. Only the bit that i have plastered should be fine to paint but i am really upset with the other surface that had bubbled and is not plastered. I am been doing this since weeks to sort out these bubbles but no good results. Atlast i am just going to paint the whole wall and see what happens and wait till the paint dry so that i can burst those bubbles and flatten them. I hope this shouldn't look very messy. Please let me know if you have any idea. Thanks.

Yeah...the "Painting phase" of those shows makes me shudder!! 3 or 4 people, using "hot dog" rollers, starting in the MIDDLE OF THE WALL (as PG says)!!! I haven't been too impressed with some of the "briefly shown" edges that I watch for... I don't listen to the people blabbing. I'm looking behind them to spot so-so paintjobs. At least SOME of the shows do show priming. Lisa L. does a decent job of this, even though it's usually "painting to sell"... Faron

Hi Steph! 1st...Get those outlet covers fixed!!! Bigtime hazard in the kitchen!!! If that were MY wall, I would do a new gray primer...MEDIUM-gray, not light gray. * White primer here?? No way. * I tint a lot of RL-Reds...they're pretty sheer! * Even after 2 coats, your Red may not hide your exising faux-finish if not priming. So: 1) Apply a full coat of gray primer. 2) When primer dries, apply 2 full coats of the Red, 5 HOURS apart. Trust me on this! 3) Use top-notch brushes/roller-covers. 4) Your Red will have final color/sheen in about a week. 5) Full-cure for washability is a month off. 6) I'd use a Satin-sheen for Kitchen. Funny story.... I've had customers "scold/advise" other customers about using gray-primers under reds...right in front of me at our paint counter! Regards, Faron

Paint & Primer in 1.....is like saying "Cake & Frosting in 1"!! Come-ON People!!!! Primer-resins & Paint resins are two WAY different things! Primers are designed to increase the ADHESION of the Paint to the substrate, AND to seal-up the variations in porosity. This enables the TWO topcoats of finish-paints to adhere better, and to perfectly even sheen-development. 2 questions: * Ladies- How many coats of Nail-Polish do you apply.....and WHY? ;-) * On cars- Most of you probably know that your Car is meticulously prepped & primed BEFORE paint & clearcoat ever touch it! WHY?! * What would happen IF.....I gave 10 people (doesn't matter if they're "Pro's" or not....!) a loaded roller, each with EXACTLY the same roller, color, & brand of paint, & put each in an identical room. Their instructions are to roll out a "full coat of paint". >>>> Obviously, no 2 people will have the same area covered!!!! Some may blame the paint. Others will probably say it's the best paint they've ever used! But......how can this be?!?!!? ;-) Everything's the SAME! What's the variable here? Faron

No primer or sanding painting over semi-gloss?

As long as it is latex over latex, you are probably fine. As fresh as the paint is, sanding may have only just removed the old paint in areas, which would have made the finish look even worse.I'd be more concerned with how eggshell would look and wear on a door, as it will most likely look nothing like a semi-gloss. Is it possible that he used satin instead, and was saying it would look like semi-gloss? If latex were applied over oil, it would most definitely need a primer. I haven't actually seen much bubbling from latex over oil, but sometimes the oils will seep through the surface of the latex (as brown spots), and the adhesion of latex to oil is pretty poor so you get peeling with wear overtime, especially on a door.
