Ok guys - I just finished making garlic bread with becky_ca's "Gilroy Garlic Bread" recipe. All was going well until I put the bread slices under the broiler and I made the mistake of not watching it carefully. In no time at all, it was black with smoke billowing out of the door when I opened the oven. (Thank goodness I have a powerful new ventilation system to clear the kitchen of the smell and smoke since there's a group of my DH's friends coming to watch Monday night football this evening.)

In my old oven I had low or high broil, but with my new oven I can actually set the temp. At what temp should it be set and how close do you broil the bread to the heating element? Do you sprinkle any Parmesan cheese on it before putting it under the broiler? (so glad I didn't try this for the first time on Sunday evening when guests are coming!)

You need to believe me that I'm certainly not a newbie in the kitchen - just never made garlic bread before.
