Our deck is finally done...take two!

I typed this in and my computer freaked out, so here I go again!

We started work on a new deck in the begining of June and just finish it this week, I thought we would never get done. I feel like I should apologize to anyone here in IL whose basement of yard flooded this summer, it was probobly our fault! LOL! Every time we started working on the deck it started raining. I was starting to think we should build an ark instead! Be forewarned, we are planning to relandscape the yard in the spring, so there will probobly be a lot of rain then too! Anyway, here is our deck. It is cedar, 30' by 20'. My BIL designed it, and he did most of the building. We did have a contractor dig the postholes and pour the footers, there are 15 of them and that is a ton of work! By the way, the handsome gent in the chair is my hubby! And the large table in front of the deck will be my new potting table that will be behind the garage. My BIL built it before they started the deck so they could mount the saws on it while they were working.

The decking is laid at a 45 degree angle. Now we just have to get it sealed.

I also just finished a quilt I have been working on for a sick friend. I'll put that picture here too. I've been wanting to try this particular log cabin design for a few years but have not had a chance. I think it came out nice, I might make another with this pattern.

So now that things should be getting quieter, I might actually have time to spend here on the forum again. Yeah!

Joanne the deck is lovely and huge!!!

Don;t worry about the thread it's fine where it is after all you'll be "Cooking" on it!

PS: DH is pretty cute too....LOL

LL, I'm thinking the hot tub in the corner is the right move. It will give a better sense of enclosure, and use well the space that will otherwise be underutilized. Having the edge of the deck available for a seating arrangement or small table will be nice, because your view will be much greater from that spot. And if you have a lot of rocks on your property, putting rocks beneath the floor can help use that space as a heat sink. I'd recommend you look into setting that up, to give some extra heat to your house in the evening after the sun goes down and it radiates heat absorbed by those rocks during the day. Summer probably has knowledge of how to design the greenhouse to give some payback to you. I think the greenhouse idea will be a great addition. I'm always for a plant space. I'm going to point out something to you about the star jasmine though. It will provide you an evergreen plant inside like that, BUT IT ONLY BLOOMS IN MAY AND JUNE. I would suggest that you get a couple of nice blooming begonias in pots, or geraniums in RED, to brighten up the space. And I also have a potted (not hanging basket) bougainvillea which will end up climbing by its long thorny limbs, and IT WILL BLOOM ALL YEAR ROUND. They come in yellow and hot pink, and mine is a white and pink combo. I cannot wait to get it into my Teahouse. It likes heat, it likes moisture, it likes lots of light. Keep it watered. And if you want a spectacular large tropical plant, look into a MUSA species of banana. They can be hardy at your latitude indoors all year. Incidentally, I just love your house, and the more you tinker with the plan the better it gets. Sarah Susanka says that most people just design the rooms with no selection of furniture spots, but you are doing the whole deal. I think you are about ready to CHOOSE THE SPOT FOR LIGHTS AND SWITCHES AND PLUGS. AND DIMMERS. Dimmers are part of it too. Go for it, lady, you have the right ideas to choose from.

Perhaps I should start over with a new post. Maybe I will. But to answer your question Rhome - Here is my existing kitchen and the surrounding rooms. I'll work on drawing a more clear layout on graph paper with all dimensions and dark lines. Basically, the remodel must include a keeping room, island, breakfast room, cubbies (like you'd see in a mudroom), a desk and all the regular appliances. So, what would you do to make this work? Janet, Rhome, Blfenton - I don't bake much but currently this is where I already bake. For the most part, I get everything I need from the fridge before I start. Baking will probably also happen on the island but the cabinets in the corner would "store" the baking stuff. Blfenton - "BK" is supposed to be "Bookcase" but apparently I was tired last night when I added it. I would thinking about doing storage on the back side of the island but am not going to do it. In all honesty, I probably just need to make the addition another foot or two but then it is even longer and puts more distance from the fridge and the existing part of the kitchen. The fridge is where it is so it doesn't block traffic flow and it close to the island, cook area, prep area, k.table and still accessible to "outsiders" not working in the kitchen - but yes, it is VERY far from the other side of the kitchen, dbl ovens especially. But does that matter? Believe it or not, I have thought through a lot of different options (like having the desk in the keeping room but then I can't have cubbies, and it's far from the kitchen table - which I need b/c of little ones) but it is a tricky space - long and narrow. I appreciate all your comments though and certainly need "fresh eyes" to make it the best it can be. Off to prep dinner. I will check back in later tonight after the kids are in bed!

Why did we go with Kvanum Kok? Easy answer - because we pass their showroom frequently, and my wife fell in love with them the first time we saw them. Plus, we both wanted as much wood as possible, including in the drawer construction etc...we looked at Siematic also, for example (which would honestly have been far more practical, in terms of efficiency for the space),but the metal drawers really turned my wife in particular off - plus they were even more expensive. Kvanum has a lot of nice details...hand painted on-site finish, dovetailed drawers, interesting shelving and detail options, nice internal organization options, and they also fairly recently added the option to have the interiors of the cabinets and shelving all be oiled oak veneer, which is very rich looking with the painted exteriors, instead of white or painted. In person, everything about them screams quality, and they are just put together really well with a lot of attention to detail. The fact that they are so unique and uncommon is also selling point, if I am being honest with myself...but I like to think it is more than that. Finally, I love the fact that they are scandinavian...we have a lot of Danish Modern furniture in the house (for example, our dining room table and chairs), so its kind of a theme for the house. The biggest downside is the cost, both monetarily and ecologically, of shipping cabinets halfway around the world. I am sure we could have saved a lot of money going more local, and I am 100% positive that we could have gotten 90% of the look for 2/3 of the price. I can't really justify going with Kvanum other than by illogical gut desire. Our current floor is really bad square ceramic tile...contractor grade, chipped, ugly color. We have wood floors in the rest of the house. I don't have a problem with standing on the hard surface, and it is worth it to me for the increased durability and water-proofness of the tile floor. The reason wood is a backup is because our floor is currently quite uneven, and our KD is worried about the cost of levelling it enough to use such big tiles (the current are like 8" square, but the Xylem boards are about 36x8). We are waiting for the contractor to give us a firm opinion/estimate on it. If it is too expensive, we will do probably oak planks stained/died a similar dark Wenge-ish color.

Oh goodness, it can be such a roller coaster looking for property. The thing about lakehouses is I find them a little less satisfying when they look like they could be in suburbia. Ideally a lakehouse has bit of a "roughing it" feel, or at least a veneer that suggests it! The lakehouse we owned was new construction and while lovely, of the vernacular, and certainly not a maintenance concern, it always felt a bit soulless to me.

Wow -- two masterpieces. You are a woman of many talents if you can build a deck and sew a beautiful quilt. When do you come up for air? I love the wood on the diagonal. I'm sure this deck will increase the value of your home, although it looks like you're not going anywhere soon.

Don't you feel like tossing your computer out of the window every once in awhile?

The quilt is beautiful....such a lovely hobby to make something so georgous out of bits and peices.

The deck is awesome! I can see you hosting lots of family and friends on warm summer nights!! Congrats on a job well done!

My house is about the same color, so I'm wondering what stain you will use. I have to have mine refinished next spring...

Joanne, the deck looks wonderful! So when is the BBQ to christen it and what is the menu? (There, that makes it legal on this side.)

And the quilt is fantastic. I wish I had that kind of talent.

Nancy, do you mean you are going to have your deck refinished? Ours is cedar so we are going with a very natural stain just to bring out the woodgrain, probably honey gold. It will look like the close-up of the deck which was taken after a rain storm while the wood was still wet. We might go a shade darker, but we want the grain to show, and we don't want the deck too dark since our house is so pale. A few more hail storms and we might need to reside, then the house will be white.

As for the deck party, that will be waiting until spring. No grease or colored foods or liquid allowed on the deck until it is sealed! My poor Weber is already covered for the season. I am actually considering making a little "patio" just for my grill to the west of the deck, nestled between the staircase and the house. That way we can hang out on the deck without too much smoke. You can see the spot I mean in the second picture. Your input ladies? Does that sound good or do you think it is too far from the door? The patio door is the only entrance to the backyard. I think it would be nice since I could leave the patio door open when I'm smoking without getting the smell in the house. The original plan was to put the grill in the bump out to the right of the door as you look at the house, but my maple went crazy growing this past year. That whole side of the deck is now under the maple tree, I have issues with cooking food under a tree since we have a lot of wildlife in the area. Does anyone here have a cedar deck with their grill on it? Do you have anything under the grill to protect the wood from grease and splatters?And how do you clean your grill on the deck? My BIL said I will have to move the grill off the deck to clean it, I don't think I can! It is pretty heavy. So, suggestions, opinions, any thought on the subject welcome.

As for the deck christening party. We are simple people with simple tastes. We will probably do grilled assorted vegis, hotdogs, chicken breasts, baked beans, salad, fruit salad (maybe I'll try grilled peaches, pineapple, or bananas for dessert) assorted goodies like cookies and brownies, and some margaritas, a bottle of lambrusco, and pop for the kiddies. Sound good?

Wow, Joanne, that deck is beautiful. I agree, a light, natural stain will look really good.

That quilt is gorgeous, too! I love the bright colors, I am sure it will cheer up your friend!
