How do you organize when you move a lot?
Q

It all depends upon what you want. If it is just 'stuff', I'd get rid of it. If it's something you love or need, keep it. This is kind of rambling, but it's some general thoughts I have. One thing I'd look at is furniture. Are you moving stuff around and keeping it because you 'might' want it in the future? Or is it stuff you currently use? For instance, we have a 1950's "Dixie" brand bedroom set with double bed, dresser, nightstand, and mirror that dh bought at auction several years ago before he married me. It's a well built sturdy set of furniture and we hate to get rid of it, but it is just taking up space in our lives. We don't currently have a need for it. It would be great in guest bedroom, but we don't have a guest bedroom. It'd be great for the kids 10 years down the road when they get an apartment, but for right now it is 'stuff' and just taking up space. Another thing to consider is the scale of what you own. When I was starting out on my own several years back, I lived in in apartment. I was always amazed at the furniture people had in their apartment like huge overstuffed couches and big chairs and tables. It wasn't to scale for the size and the rooms always felt crowded. Are there a few things you could trade out or downsize? For instance, do you need a couch and a loveseat? Could you get rid of one or the other? Or you replace the couch with a loveseat and the loveseat with a comfortable chair? Do you need a coffee tables and end tables or are they just more horizontal places to put things? I see a lot of sideboards, hutches and cedar chests in people's homes. To me, they are space wasters and time killers because they have to be cleaned and don't offer much in return. That's my opinion only. If they adding value to the person who owns them, then great, but my impression usually is that someone had a space to fill so they filled it. I think it all comes down to what is a priority for you. Is the furniture, books, collections, etc., still important to you? Or do you think you could let go of some of it to free up time and space?

Talking to the neighbors pre-purchase. Do you?
Q
Comments (22)
We have always talked to the neighbors in potential neighborhoods especially the neighbors 1 to 2 doors down and directly across the street from the house we are looking at. We would cruise through the neighborhood in the morning, when school lets out, and in the evening between 5 & 7 to see how the neighborhood "lived". As we saw neighbors outside, we would simply stop, introduce ourselves as potential buyers of the house for sale and ask some questions--i.e. tell me about the neighborhood--is it quiet, do they do block parties, how long have they lived there, are there lots of kids & what ages (I make sure to mention my kids' ages or have my kids with me), is it a good neighborhood for (insert whatever you're looking for i.e. young couples starting out, young families, empty nesters, etc), how is the HOA to deal with, do they know the history behind the house I'm looking at or anything about it, (that last question saved us on a couple different houses), does Domino's deliver, is cable available in that area or is it limited to satellite, etc. I think if you don't see how the neighborhood lives & talk with the people who live there before making your decision you could end up disappointed at the very least and absolutely miserable at the worst.

Ever find yourself talking to your garden? What do you say?
Q
Comments (20)
This is fun to read.:) Each time I plant something I say "(name of plant) please come grow in my garden." When I'm planting with my grandkids in the little plots I've made for them at their homes, we say it together and it's a fun little ritual (ages 2 and 3). Also, I express a lot of gratitude, maybe wordlessly, as the garden grows and looks amazing, and produces. I also seem to remember a few cheering sessions, like when something peeks up over the soil, as in "Yay! you look marvelous!" Katie, I remember that study from ages ago. Would be interesting to google if anything has been replicated and researched in a way that would -- no pun intended -- hold water. My mom visited Findhorn in the 80's, so it runs in the family.

When you talk to your roses, what do you say?
Q
Comments (29)
Thanks for all the inspirations, guys! JoeMoose - you're so polite to your roses, maybe I should try asking them nicely to put out some more blooms when I deadhead and see if they listen. Kittymoonbeam, I think your roses are chiming in with you in a croaking "water, water!!" voice - I pity you out in CA. Countrygirl - I can relate to the guilt trips for our roses - if we put all that work into them they need to shape up after all! Beth - that's the perfect guilt trip in fact - don't bite the hand that feeds you/deadheads you/ waters you. "I've missed you" - ah, what a nice sentiment KentuckyRose and it definitely expresses the nice side of "well, FINALLY...". Rosecandy - I've definitely begged my roses to survive and gotten more desperate as they dwindle over time, and I talk to my resident rabbits all the time (including a baby one we've named Norbert) to stay away from my roses (but he just looks at me smugly and keeps eating). Patty - I'm not letting myself think that I might jinx the roses - if the best fertilizer is the gardener's footsteps, I'm thinking that talking has to count for something too. Jim - of course, the sad second part to that one is "Don't die on me buckaroo!" Msdorkgirl - I had to laugh at the last one. I keep asking Fimbriata every year why it won't just die and put us all out of our miseries, but even though it's horribly chlorotic at the moment, it's also totally winter hardy and I just can't kill a survivor like that without just cause. Holly - you've captured the surprise of rose growing well - "what on earth is that" or "where did that come from" - when you check your roses every day or so it's still amazing to see how easy it is to be surprised. Unfortunately, I'm often surprised by "where did that go" with the bloom that just opened yesterday and is already wilted and fading today. Cynthia

I am a solitary person by nature. I can work for hours at my desk without saying a word, unless the phone rings. My kids talk a lot. My middle child just has to be making noise at all times. If he is not talking then he is humming or just making weird sounds. He has always been this way. I am just quite. I read and do cross stitch for hobbies, both silent type things.

I can be both ways. I can spend hours being very quiet and I work in the house only when it's quiet. Then again, I love to converse with friends and relate funny stories. I owned a hair salon for years and had to entertain the clients so I guess it all depends on the circumstances. People tell me I'm a good listener.

I really don't talk much to anyone anymore but when I do I talk a lot. I audio tape a lot of articles just so I don't lose my power of expression and sound. I miss singing. I had a beautiful voice and somehow just can't sing anymore. (not bragging just being truthful)

I am a talker. My Brother used to tease me by saying that the Doctor made a mistake and vaccinated me with a phonograph needle! (Remember phonographs?)

Now that I live alone, I miss conversation. When I'm out shopping I often speak to other people when it is appropriate. I find that there are many other people who miss having a conversation now and then.

I'm not a phone person though. I rarely call anyone, I like to be with the person I'm talking to.

And I am also a good listener.

LMAO!

BF thinks finds it amusing that I talk to my 3 doggies, just like they were humans. I often ask them questions and then suggest answers.

You want a biscuit? They wag tails as an answer.
Let's go to the mailbox...They head toward the mailbox.
Want to go for a walk? They start stamping their feet, spinning in circles and turn in the direction of the woods.

I'm like Sue VA, I love to talk, but not on the phone. I rarely call anyone to visit.

When I'm with friends, I have to remind myself to be quiet and not make a nuisance of myself.

Ha, ha, Chemocurl, I got my phone call from my gal friend this morning instead of last evening. I am a good listener for her. She has had it really rough, recently lost a daughter to a stroke, a year before lost a son to a car accident, and now her other son is in the hospital very ill, probably will have to go to a nursing home, and her husband has Parkinson's. So sometimes being on the phone can really help the other person if you just mostly listen. I enjoy her calls. We were neighbors when we were growing up. I count my blessings.

On this forum ...

... regarding my situation ...

... 'nuff said!

P.S. Last night, en route to a meeting of our long-running investment group (travelling several miles together to save gas), my friend, retired accountant with a large auto parts manufacturer (since closed), said as we went into the Bulk Barn to shop ...

... that he thought that he was a gregarious, companionable, chatty kind of person ...

... but that he couldn't hold candle to me!

I'd just had a conversation with a lady about to drive away from the parking lot in her SUV.

When I talk alot I say alot of nothing (chatter.)

When I want to really say 'something' worthwhile, I try to keep it to a profound sentence or two.

When I take time to think about things, I prefer to write it, so I dunno;

Am I talkative or quiet?

I wish you hadn't asked...now I'll be up all night trying to figure it out!
