People in our municipality generally have a habit of placing raked and bagged - and sometimes shredded ;)- leaves close to the curb before pick-up day. Then they move them to the curb on what we call 'green cart' day. (Our municipality composts so one week they pick up all compostables and recyclables, and the next week it's regular landfill garbage. We have these big green carts where homeowners place the compostables and then wheel it out to the curb.) I always talk to the homeowners since the bags are not set directly at the roadside in most cases. Everyone is always interested in their use, but most are not gardeners so they really don't want the leaves. One guy does shred some and leave them on his lawn, but he's got so many he puts 1/2 to the curb, and the other 1/2 he throws in the woods behind his house. Since meeting him, he now bags everything for me and is happy to see me every year. I have about 50 bags of his stuff under our veranda waiting to be shredded. I've been collecting from one particular household for 4 years now. I had received permission from the 'man of the house' to drive unto his property to get the shredded goodies. This fall, his wife came out and expressed an interest in gardening since she was retiring. I gave her my personal info for her to get in touch with me in the spring so I can give her a boatload of perennials and young shrubs! And if it so happens that they start using the goodies I've been getting from them, then all the better!

Lots of great advice above. I especially like the emphasis on supporting individual artisans. That's how I justify my ginormous library fines: I am supporting the local library. For me, I often will have an amount in my head, beyond which an object just seems unreasonable to me, regardless of whether or not I can actually afford it. Currently, my own dilemma concerns a 4,000 range hood. For me, this is just not a reasonable amount to spend on a hood, no matter how much I love it. So, is there any conflict in your mind about spending for a faucet what you would spend for an excellent quality dishwasher? If not, then it will probably thrill you every time you turn it on. And who doesn't need a good thrill several times a day! If you go for it, check out Home and Stone. They seem to carry some versions of it for a teeny, weeny bit less. The only thing I wonder about is whether this faucet style goes with the mission style you described above (e.g. the oil rubbed bronze light fixure from Rejuvenation). Now, I'll be the first to admit that my design style is seriously lacking, so I could be totally wrong on this! But when I saw the rough hammered faucet, it made me think of my sister-in-law's upscale western style, "chic cowgirl" bathroom in Colorado. It doesn't read "Greene and Greene" to me. We moved out of our house last year for a gut remodel of our kitchen, refinishing of main floor wood floors and replacing upstairs carpeting with wood and painting of walls & trim throughout. We were able to store some things in our attic during this time, but all our furniture was in a storage pod. It was exhausting cleaning this place out. Not the big stuff, but every closet, cabinet and drawer. We had just cleared out my parents' home of 30 yrs. when my Mom passed and set my Dad up in an apartment nearby. So our energy gauge was depleted from the start. We had to do it, though, as I'd been without a working range for 2 yrs. and the refrigerator had begun to fail. I swore I would never, ever buy anything else for the house that wasn't essential. I have always kept a clutter-free home in my living spaces, but my closets and cabinets and attic were where all the overflow stuff lived. Our DS moved overseas 6 yrs. ago so we have most of his accumulated worldly treasures in our attic. And DD has a fair share up there, too, as her little Cape has little storage. Aside from a few indulgences - like new glass pieces for my BD - I've managed to live by the "one thing in/one thing out" rule for the past year. For people who are concerned about their items not being appreciated at a thrift store, I live in a rather crummy area of the country and even our Good Wills and Salvation Armies have appraisers who come in and volunteer on all sorts of things from furniture to jewelry. If you are curious, go on into a few thrift stores in your area and see if they have a "boutique" area or a lot of glass counters to display items away from hands, or cordoned off shelves near the register. You might be surprised at what they have on display... Be careful not to find any new treasures though. For those of you who enjoy your stuff, KEEP IT! Enjoy it and love it. That's the whole point. I talked about my Dad having items that we knew he loved because he had so few and was obviously choosy, but one thing I didn't mention was the stuff that he kept in excess that could not have provided much value to him or anyone else. We hauled off so many old magazines, household chemicals and products that were so old that they had gone bad, old paperwork that he didn't need to keep, cardboard boxes, old broken tools, etc. For those not interested in getting rid of sentimental items, at least do your family members a favor and organize/toss the type of stuff mentioned above. I'm constantly surprised at how much outdated stuff I find in my own house (this morning a box of old paint cans- it was good when it was put away a few years ago, now not so much). It can be hard to see even when it is right in front of your eyes. Interesting thought about designating items to people in your will. My father was not a person who had much of $$ value, but he had listed a few items in his will to go to certain people. They were things that obviously meant a lot to him, but when the executor tried to hand those items over to people, nobody wanted any of the listed items. That left the executor a little bent out of shape because he felt Dad's will wasn't being honored. That's a double edged blade as well. Then also consider that Dad did not designate even one item specifically for me... my feelings aren't too badly hurt, but for some people designations could be very devastating.

If I don't leave the house, I can go for days/weeks without talking to anyone but my cat.

Just don't get me started or I'll talk your ear off. lol

I am a solitary person by nature. I can work for hours at my desk without saying a word, unless the phone rings. My kids talk a lot. My middle child just has to be making noise at all times. If he is not talking then he is humming or just making weird sounds. He has always been this way. I am just quite. I read and do cross stitch for hobbies, both silent type things.

Being the guarded person that I am, I'm usually quiet, but am a good listener. I can talk more depending on the company I'm with.

I can be both ways. I can spend hours being very quiet and I work in the house only when it's quiet. Then again, I love to converse with friends and relate funny stories. I owned a hair salon for years and had to entertain the clients so I guess it all depends on the circumstances. People tell me I'm a good listener.

Around immediate family, I am pretty talkative. But around others I am quiet. Or so I have been told. My family says others just don't know me well enough.

I'm quiet but I can carry a conversation. Proof is a painful patch on my chin where I balance the phone receiver.

I really don't talk much to anyone anymore but when I do I talk a lot. I audio tape a lot of articles just so I don't lose my power of expression and sound. I miss singing. I had a beautiful voice and somehow just can't sing anymore. (not bragging just being truthful)

I am a talker. My Brother used to tease me by saying that the Doctor made a mistake and vaccinated me with a phonograph needle! (Remember phonographs?)

Now that I live alone, I miss conversation. When I'm out shopping I often speak to other people when it is appropriate. I find that there are many other people who miss having a conversation now and then.

I'm not a phone person though. I rarely call anyone, I like to be with the person I'm talking to.

And I am also a good listener.

BF thinks finds it amusing that I talk to my 3 doggies, just like they were humans. I often ask them questions and then suggest answers.

You want a biscuit? They wag tails as an answer.
Let's go to the mailbox...They head toward the mailbox.
Want to go for a walk? They start stamping their feet, spinning in circles and turn in the direction of the woods.

I'm like Sue VA, I love to talk, but not on the phone. I rarely call anyone to visit.

When I'm with friends, I have to remind myself to be quiet and not make a nuisance of myself.

Ha, ha, Chemocurl, I got my phone call from my gal friend this morning instead of last evening. I am a good listener for her. She has had it really rough, recently lost a daughter to a stroke, a year before lost a son to a car accident, and now her other son is in the hospital very ill, probably will have to go to a nursing home, and her husband has Parkinson's. So sometimes being on the phone can really help the other person if you just mostly listen. I enjoy her calls. We were neighbors when we were growing up. I count my blessings.

P.S. Last night, en route to a meeting of our long-running investment group (travelling several miles together to save gas), my friend, retired accountant with a large auto parts manufacturer (since closed), said as we went into the Bulk Barn to shop ...

... that he thought that he was a gregarious, companionable, chatty kind of person ...

... but that he couldn't hold candle to me!

I'd just had a conversation with a lady about to drive away from the parking lot in her SUV.

I'm mostly quiet. Depending on the situation. I had a cousin tell me many years ago "Yea, you're quiet alright.
Quite lively and shy as a junkyard dog".
At the time he was probably right...LOL

When I talk alot I say alot of nothing (chatter.)

When I want to really say 'something' worthwhile, I try to keep it to a profound sentence or two.

When I take time to think about things, I prefer to write it, so I dunno;

Am I talkative or quiet?

I wish you hadn't asked...now I'll be up all night trying to figure it out!
