My dirty boy (horse)

The blacksmith came that morning and remarked how clean and shiny he was. Later I took the camera back to find he had rolled by the stream. He will be 10 months old this month. Kathy

Blue/Chocolate bedding for sure! Would love that with something like the airplane wall decoration in pic #1 Look around at your other stores for accessories that maybe aren't just "airplaney" Bringing a "pig" piggy bank in with mostly the same colors but maybe one "new" color will all some eclectic look. Check etsy to some wall decals that may give you an idea of what to put on the wall or other things that you may want to incorporate. You can order those or paint something like them...My mother suggested we paint a tree on an empty wall in my baby girls room, so I went on Etsy, and have a tree, some birds, squirrels, nuts, etc. that my parents painted based off the decal. For something else on the walls, I would love to see some basic frames with shapes or letters in a boyish colored plaid inside them. Or maybe check Target for some wall decor "words" in boyish prints/plaids...above my babies crib is "Dream, Dance, LAugh" in girl prints. I put one in the middle on the top row and the other 2 on the bottom row. I thought it would be a lot of words, but love it. I also got one of those book shelves that hang on the wall from Target, but have seen them at PB or landofnod. Pick some books to display in their that coordinate with your colors but don't have airplanes...this will give you a picture that isn't out of place but helps with the overly matchy. A basket of baby blankets or burp blankets will add more pattern and texture to the room. Don't forget Hobby Lobby!

I just heard the DJ on one of our local stations explain what the song means. Actually, he had parents that were interested in finding out call the station and he would fill you in. I didn't call but from what the folks were saying when they came back on the line, it didn't sound very good. He mostly talked about the part that says something like " gonna Superman your ho...." and what it really means. I figured it out but can't repeat it! Oh well... I remember nasty little songs from my era that we'd all sing to. I think your niece looks hysterical!! Ha!

Thanks everyone! yes that is little Banjo. He has a few more years to grow and fill out (but he is filled out enough).
Gayle I miss my little foal. Wish I had a friend with a mare due.
He is still as sweet as can be and still acts like a baby sometimes. Next month he is getting gelded so he will stay a sweet boy.

Give him a hug and a big ole kiss from me. I had a wonderful quarter horse, Buck, when I was young. I still miss him.

Do you geld them that young? I'm just curiious. Buck was over two before he was done. He was so sweet and gentle with kids and women, and a real stinker with any and all men.

One time three of my very young, under age 10, cousins and myself were all piled up on Buck's back, riding around the field, no saddle. Smallest cousin slid off Buck's backside. Buck froze, lifted his back leg and wouldn't put it down until he saw Grayson get up and move around in front of him.

He was a sweetheart.

Gee, I was surprised to see how big he is. He is such a beauty, dirt and all.

You know what I would like to see? A picture of him when he was at the standing alone stage, and this pic side by side.

Just curious--how are horses gelded? Are they put under an anaesthetic, laying down for the surgery? Does the vet come, or do you have to take him somewhere? What exactly does happen, something is cut or removed? I know what a gelded horse is, but I'm not sure exactly what happened to make him one!

Gelded horses are neutered males; their testicals have been removed. It's the same as male dogs and cats that have been neutered, but on a larger scale. I'm not sure exactly how this is accomplished; Buck was about 8 years old when I got him and it had been done several years earlier.

Young male cattle, destined to become part of our food chain, are neutered very early. They are then called "steers." Steers that grow up to maturity are called Oxen. They're often used as draft animals.

I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but here's some of the animal terms I understand.

Horse...young male unneutered horse
Stallion...sexually mature horse, unneutered
Filly...young female "horse" that has not had a foal
Mare...female horse that has given birth to a foal
Foal...young horse still nursing or up to a certain age (6 months???_

Heifer...young female bovine that has not had a calf
Cow...female bovine that has given birth
Calf...newborn bovine up to a certain age
Steer...young, neutered male bovine
Bull...sexually mature male bovine
Ox...mature neutered bovine

Mule...a hybrid cross between a female horse and a male donkey. Mules are genetically sterile.

Oh, and male donkeys are "Jacks," and females are "Jennies." I don't know what their foals are properly called.

The male animals we commonly eat, cows, pigs, roosters (capons) are neutered to improve the flavor and tenderness of the meat.

Socks, I have no idea; but I'd venture to say yes. They couldn't control him otherwise. I'll ask my vet about the procedure next time I take the Harry-Dude in for a checkup.
