Philly Fillies take on Reading Terminal Market!

Using Jude31's sugestion of these Fillies (not the Phillies which would be WAY too confusing) I guess I am the first one to post!

Let me say, I had a great time! I was actually the last to arrive and had forgotten my requisite "post-it note" so thank heavens all the girls were where they said they would be and I recognized Pam and Susie from prior meet-ups. Ruthanna and Teresa are absolutely delightful and I am so happy to have met them. I wish I had taken more photos, but as anticipated, lots more time was spent talking and talking and talking and the camera was left in the pocket too may times!

Glad it was a good time. I can't believe the hard candies in the last photo are $4.99 a pound! Run of the mill stuff here going for $2.99 a pound. The rent must be high in that market.

It really depends on what your kids are interested in. We were zoo members when my kids were little. I think first of all the weather is iffy lately. It was in the low-40s this morning (and morning is when you said you'd be going). There are some really nice displays but getting to the zoo takes a little drive from Center City. The Schuylkill (the road you take) is ALWAYS jam packed. I don't know if you'll have a car -- you didn't mention that. Anyway, it wouldn't be my first choice. The Camden Aquarium -- the only one around, so I assume it's what you mean. You're going to have to either cross the bridge and drive into Camden or take the ferry across the river from Center City (minor hassle). It's an okay aquarium. It's newer than your Boston Aquarium. There are some really nice exhibits but as you say, it's similar to what you've seen. The one thing that is kind of nice is that the Battleship New Jersey is next to the Aquarium. If your kids have never been inside an aircraft carrier they might really like that. It's like the Intrepid in NYC. As far as I know Boston doesn't have anything like that. The Franklin Institute is in the city, very close to everything. With 3 days you don't really lose any time traveling like you do with the other attractions. I don't know what's there right now. Within walking distance is also the Academy of Natural Sciences. You could probably hit up both of those if you wanted to. Have you checked the www.uwishunu.com tourist website? My kids are science crazy so the Mutter would be on their list. If your kids like cars, one little known museum is the Simeone Car museum. It's a beautiful collection of European racing cars. It is not very well known. Also little known is the American Chemical Society museum on Chestnut and 3rd. Near that (this part of town is called Olde City) is the Benjamin Franklin ghost house and the Benjamin Franklin museum/post office. It's in a complex called Franklin Court. By complex, I mean an open courtyard, not a building complex. There is an underground museum about Franklin, statesman/inventor/scientist etc. I'm not sure of the hours, there was some renovation going on so you should check that it's actually open. The ghost house is a robert venturi project, it's the outline in white beams of the actual house that Franklin lived in with his wife Deborah. It's burnt down now but they did some excavation and did artifacts. It's a national park service site, there are sometimes historians and guides there who can tell you what you're looking at. There is a very cool ice cream parlor near there also called Franklin Fountain. It is a perfect Victorian ice cream parlor. www.franklinfountain.com. Very historic with flavors you'll never find anywhere else. The servers wear authentic barbershop quartet type outfits. Again, I've never seen this anywhere else. Another little museum in the neighborhood is the American Philosophical Museum. This is another of Franklin's inventions. It was founded by Franklin as a place for people to debate and discover and it still exists. They have a small museum with changing exhibits -- one I saw a little while back was all about Steampunk art, so it's not a dusty fusty place at all. Each of these places only take 30 - 40 minutes to walk through. They're not expensive either. I think we only paid maybe $3 a person at the American Philosophical Museum when we were last there. What's nice is you can sort of "chain" them together and en route, stop of coffee, bathroom breaks, and see some of the beautiful pocket gardens and brownstones. The gardens should be blooming by then (we're a little ahead of Boston for blooming times).

D'Angelos is a good restaurant. While we've only been for dinners, the food is always very good, and the service impeccable. If there aren't two places with the hanging basket chairs, I think you were at the Continental Midtown, which is a very hip spot that does a huge later evening business for cocktails, etc. It is one of many Stephen Starr's successful Philadelphia restaurant ventures. The kids always love that place. We have brunch there now and then, but usually sit downstairs in a window booth to people watch while eating. Years ago, we would take DD and a friend or two of hers for lunches. The young girls liked being able to go upstairs to sit & dine in the hanging basket chairs without the adults, lol. Glad you had a good trip. If you've just returned, you definitely had some good weather for sightseeing.

Jim's on South Street was my favorite growing up. You haven't had a REAL Philly cheese steak until you've had one here in the Philly area, but, they are not all equal. Born and raised here, I've had too many to count, and the difference in taste will vary based on the meat, cheese, and of course, the roll (which must be fresh!!). Cream cheese on a steak sandwich/roll is not a Philly cheese steak, and most would give the "EWWW face gesture" at that (no offense sunshines, really). It's just we Philly folks know our steaks and that ain't one of them. I'll take mine 'wit' mushrooms, please, and they better not be out of a can!

The braided grass (that is woefully out of focus - I apologize for the poor photographic skills) was Sweet Grass used for smudging.

One of the most sacred plants for the Plains Indians, sweetgrass is a tall wild grass with a reddish bas and perfume-like, musty odor. It grows mainly on the eastern side of the Rockies in Montana and adjacent Alberta, Canada. It also shows up in some small areas of Wyoming and South Dakota. Its botanical name is Hierochloe odorata. Some common names for it are Seneca grass, holy grass and vanilla grass. We have been told that a variety of vanilla grass grows in North Central California. But, how similar it is to the Plains variety we don't know.

On the Plains, sweetgrass is usually braided together in bunches as a person's hair is braided, although friends have said they have seen it simply bunched and wrapped in cloth. Either way, it is usually burned by shaving little bits over hot coals or lighting the end and waving it around, letting the smoke spread through the air. This latter method is how we were taught to burn sweetgrass in the sweat lodge - allowing the purifying smoke to get to all parts of the lodge.

We were taught that it was good to burn sweetgrass after the sage or cedar had driven out the bad influences. Sweetgrass brings in the good spirits and the good influences. As with cedar, burning sweetgrass while praying sends prayers up to the Creator in the smoke. High Hollow Horn says in the The Sacred Pipe "This smoke from the sweetgrass will rise up to you, and will spread throughout the universe. Its fragrance will be known by the wingeds, the four-leggeds, and the two leggeds, for we understand that we are all relatives; may all our brothers be tame and not fear us!" Sweetgrass is also put in pipe bundles and medicine bundles along with sage to purify and protect sacred objects.

Sweetgrass is very rare today, its territory severely cut by development, cattle-grazing, and wheat fields - and tradition Indians in the northern Plains are trying to protect the last remaining fields. The best way for most folks to get sweetgrass is to buy it at Native American retail outlets. This gives support to Indians who can help the fields from being depleted."

Hey friend! Glad you made it home okay. I walked Teresa back to her hotel but I was bushed so said goodbye and walked back to the train station. Had to wait 40 minutes for a train! Oy.

Anyway, I will post my pics asap. We had fun!!

Alexa, It looks like it was a great time!! Although, who is who???? I don't know anyone so I can't put names with faces????

I wish I could have stayed out east long enough to have made it to this get together. I would have loved to meet everyone.

The red hot redhead is Ruthanna, Teresa is lovely in lavender, Susie is rocking the Phillies shirt (with her special guest Drew also wearing Phillies red) and Pam (dedtired) is beautiful in brown. Oddly, I am not in any of these since I was behind the lens LOLOLOL!

Most of the Philly Fillies (BTW I love that name) I've seen before except for Ruthanna. Nice to be able to put a face with the name.

Pauline, I can't believe you remember my search for glasses! These are black in the front and red on the sides. Very funky, just like me. That's a joke. Thanks for the compliment.

Would have been wonderphul to have been there and join in all the alliterative phrenzy.
I will await a post from Ruthanna, showing that she is OK. A bump on the head is very worrisome.

Okay - for a little levity.... I completely forgot to mention why I took a picture of the sausage stuffer..... unfortunately you can only see the "CK" on the top of the hopper... but the full name on the the hopper was "DICK".

I kid you not...

That is DICK the Sausage Stuffer!!!!!!

Thanks for the pics and report Alexa! Y'all look great and I know you had a great time hangin' out and shopping together. The Evil One came to mind when I saw the pic of the stuffer...LOL! Susie, Drew has grown into a nice looking young man. I can't believe how tall he is...seems it was just yesterday he was just a little boy.

I didn't take any pictures of anyone. But I had a wonderful time! It was such a pleasure to meet three new CF friends, Lou (and his family), Teresa from NC and Ruthanna. And to see my Philly cohorts again!! Next time Lehigh Valley!!
