Philly Fillies take on Reading Terminal Market!

Using Jude31's sugestion of these Fillies (not the Phillies which would be WAY too confusing) I guess I am the first one to post!

Let me say, I had a great time! I was actually the last to arrive and had forgotten my requisite "post-it note" so thank heavens all the girls were where they said they would be and I recognized Pam and Susie from prior meet-ups. Ruthanna and Teresa are absolutely delightful and I am so happy to have met them. I wish I had taken more photos, but as anticipated, lots more time was spent talking and talking and talking and the camera was left in the pocket too may times!

Glad it was a good time. I can't believe the hard candies in the last photo are $4.99 a pound! Run of the mill stuff here going for $2.99 a pound. The rent must be high in that market.

what I would like to see at the Philly garden show

Here is what I posted on the NHGC website Pennsylvania forum in response to a question about my Philly Garden show experience: Posted March 13, 2006 08:45 PM Well, I enjoyed the Philly show, but I think the landscapes designed at the Harrisburg Garden Expo were more of the type that I could see in the average or a little above average Pennsylvania landscape. Some, but not all of the Philly displays seem to be more (for lack of a better word) artistic. Fountains with champagne glasses incorporated. Ponds with bright silver balls floating around, etc. I did take a roll of 24 pics at the Philly show. When I get them, where is the best place to share them? I really enjoyed going to the Reading Terminal Market for lunch and dinner. I took in one speaker - Mike McGrath, former editor of Organic Gardening magazine. One thing I came away with from that talk was to use a dozen eggshells in the hole when you plant tomatoes to ward off blossom end rot. Or, if you can't find eggshells, Mike said use Calcium Carbonate. When I talked to the Fertrell Organic Fertilzier man at the Harrisburg Garden Expo, he said they have a product that is even better - Crab Meal. Crab Meal is a potent organic fertilizer derived from the Blue Crab after 40% of the crab meat has been removed. Shells are kiln dried and pulverized into a beige colored meal. NPK averages 5-2-5 with over 13% natural calcium, which virtually eliminates blossom-end rot in tomatoes and peppers. Over 30 trace elements and vitamins Apply 5 lbs per 45-60 feet of garden row or 2 tablespoons per 1 gallon pot. Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much Zone 6 (South Central PA)

It really depends on what your kids are interested in. We were zoo members when my kids were little. I think first of all the weather is iffy lately. It was in the low-40s this morning (and morning is when you said you'd be going). There are some really nice displays but getting to the zoo takes a little drive from Center City. The Schuylkill (the road you take) is ALWAYS jam packed. I don't know if you'll have a car -- you didn't mention that. Anyway, it wouldn't be my first choice. The Camden Aquarium -- the only one around, so I assume it's what you mean. You're going to have to either cross the bridge and drive into Camden or take the ferry across the river from Center City (minor hassle). It's an okay aquarium. It's newer than your Boston Aquarium. There are some really nice exhibits but as you say, it's similar to what you've seen. The one thing that is kind of nice is that the Battleship New Jersey is next to the Aquarium. If your kids have never been inside an aircraft carrier they might really like that. It's like the Intrepid in NYC. As far as I know Boston doesn't have anything like that. The Franklin Institute is in the city, very close to everything. With 3 days you don't really lose any time traveling like you do with the other attractions. I don't know what's there right now. Within walking distance is also the Academy of Natural Sciences. You could probably hit up both of those if you wanted to. Have you checked the www.uwishunu.com tourist website? My kids are science crazy so the Mutter would be on their list. If your kids like cars, one little known museum is the Simeone Car museum. It's a beautiful collection of European racing cars. It is not very well known. Also little known is the American Chemical Society museum on Chestnut and 3rd. Near that (this part of town is called Olde City) is the Benjamin Franklin ghost house and the Benjamin Franklin museum/post office. It's in a complex called Franklin Court. By complex, I mean an open courtyard, not a building complex. There is an underground museum about Franklin, statesman/inventor/scientist etc. I'm not sure of the hours, there was some renovation going on so you should check that it's actually open. The ghost house is a robert venturi project, it's the outline in white beams of the actual house that Franklin lived in with his wife Deborah. It's burnt down now but they did some excavation and did artifacts. It's a national park service site, there are sometimes historians and guides there who can tell you what you're looking at. There is a very cool ice cream parlor near there also called Franklin Fountain. It is a perfect Victorian ice cream parlor. www.franklinfountain.com. Very historic with flavors you'll never find anywhere else. The servers wear authentic barbershop quartet type outfits. Again, I've never seen this anywhere else. Another little museum in the neighborhood is the American Philosophical Museum. This is another of Franklin's inventions. It was founded by Franklin as a place for people to debate and discover and it still exists. They have a small museum with changing exhibits -- one I saw a little while back was all about Steampunk art, so it's not a dusty fusty place at all. Each of these places only take 30 - 40 minutes to walk through. They're not expensive either. I think we only paid maybe $3 a person at the American Philosophical Museum when we were last there. What's nice is you can sort of "chain" them together and en route, stop of coffee, bathroom breaks, and see some of the beautiful pocket gardens and brownstones. The gardens should be blooming by then (we're a little ahead of Boston for blooming times).

Realtor is terminating our contract...
Q
Comments (8)
She is the broker for her own company...it is just her. Yes, we would like to get the house cheaper...who wouldn't? However, we also know the seller really wants to sell because the realtor told us the seller was really mad at us for not extending the contract because her condo is almost done being built. Unfortunately we got stuck with a real dud for a realtor. Our signed contracts were not given to us until after a month of having our house listed (and we had to ask twice), there were mistakes in various listings online and weeks without any communication from her. We communicated our issues with her early on but see now her plans to be moving across the country were a priority. In the end if she broke the contract by putting her interests before that of her seller she has violated the contract. Why would it be okay then for her to think she should get a commission on the sale? A good realtor isn't going to pick and choose what parts of a contract she is going to abide by.

Just to follow up, we ate at both Parc and Dandelion Pub and enjoyed our meals at both! As anyone in the area knows, the weather Sun-Tues this week was not very springlike. Ugh. We went for a cold walk on Sun. afternoon when we arrived, just random wandering until we had stretched our legs enough after our 6 hour drive. Our tour of Temple was cold and windy on Mon. After that we ate at Dandelion and were back in our cozy hotel room by 7 or so. On Tues., we relocated to West Chester and by late afternoon, there were snow flurries! Anyway, we really didn’t end up with much free time after our school tours. At least we had decent weather for our drive home! Thanks for all the ideas, though.

The braided grass (that is woefully out of focus - I apologize for the poor photographic skills) was Sweet Grass used for smudging.

"Sweetgrass

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the most sacred plants for the Plains Indians, sweetgrass is a tall wild grass with a reddish bas and perfume-like, musty odor. It grows mainly on the eastern side of the Rockies in Montana and adjacent Alberta, Canada. It also shows up in some small areas of Wyoming and South Dakota. Its botanical name is Hierochloe odorata. Some common names for it are Seneca grass, holy grass and vanilla grass. We have been told that a variety of vanilla grass grows in North Central California. But, how similar it is to the Plains variety we don't know.

On the Plains, sweetgrass is usually braided together in bunches as a person's hair is braided, although friends have said they have seen it simply bunched and wrapped in cloth. Either way, it is usually burned by shaving little bits over hot coals or lighting the end and waving it around, letting the smoke spread through the air. This latter method is how we were taught to burn sweetgrass in the sweat lodge - allowing the purifying smoke to get to all parts of the lodge.

We were taught that it was good to burn sweetgrass after the sage or cedar had driven out the bad influences. Sweetgrass brings in the good spirits and the good influences. As with cedar, burning sweetgrass while praying sends prayers up to the Creator in the smoke. High Hollow Horn says in the The Sacred Pipe "This smoke from the sweetgrass will rise up to you, and will spread throughout the universe. Its fragrance will be known by the wingeds, the four-leggeds, and the two leggeds, for we understand that we are all relatives; may all our brothers be tame and not fear us!" Sweetgrass is also put in pipe bundles and medicine bundles along with sage to purify and protect sacred objects.

Sweetgrass is very rare today, its territory severely cut by development, cattle-grazing, and wheat fields - and tradition Indians in the northern Plains are trying to protect the last remaining fields. The best way for most folks to get sweetgrass is to buy it at Native American retail outlets. This gives support to Indians who can help the fields from being depleted."

Most of the Philly Fillies (BTW I love that name) I've seen before except for Ruthanna. Nice to be able to put a face with the name.

Ruthanna, hope you weren't seriously hurt.

Sounds and looks like everyone had a great time.

Nice to see you all looking so good. I did recognize everyone from seeing your pictures over the years.
And Pam I also still remember when we were helping you choose your glasses frames LOL!
