Door Trim and paint problem - advice welcome

I posted this on the remodel forum and thought this might be the place since one of the responses blamed the painters prep work. A bit unfair given the challenge we have.

After painting the pre-primed wood door trim - 1x4 - we discovered the trim was actually composed of 3 vertical strips of wood that revealed very distinct lines when painted in the low sheen - as opposed to the shadow hiding grayish flat primer. THe lines run all the way from top to bottom.

My trim rep stopped by the house and was as shocked as the GC and painters.

GC doesn't think sanding will work since it is all the way through.

For more info please link to original post - I appreciate any suggestions for solutions - not interested at this point in trying to blame anyone for putting up bad trim or being unable to satisfactorily paint bad trim. Whats done is done. I know there are creative smart people on thee forums and someone may have that brilliant idea ;-)

THanks!
