Semi-Gloss over Satin
Comments (2)we once were not happy with the high gloss we used, paint store told us to use satin for the top coat, point being, I think its alright for you to use a semi for the top coat, staying with the same brand you used for the satin. also, you'll have a stronger coat with the semi versus the satin....See MoreBM Eco Spec semi-gloss - problems?
Comments (6)I'm a builder: In June of 2009 we received shipment of interior MDF doors from Holzkraft. The doors arrived pre-primed from the manufacturer. Being a LEED project, zero VOC latex paints were used. The painter lightly sanded the pre-primed doors, used a tack cloth to remove any loose paint and applied a Benjamin Moore paint, Eco Spec. product directly to the door. The paint did not stick to the door and could be easily be removed with a light scratch. We called the paint store who lined up an on-site meeting with the Eco Spec. representative who confirmed the techniques being used by the painter were part of the correct process for his product. He suggested we use a primer to go over the manufacturers primer. The painter then primed all the doors before applying the final coat. The finish paint adhered to the new primer. Two years later the homeowner has noticed several areas were the paint has been removed with the least amount of effort. The confusing part of the equation is the painter used the same process on the MDF baseboards and casing through out the house and the home owner is seeing no signs of problems. I am in the process of hiring a surface engineer. I will post the results in a few weeks....See MoreAnyone used semi-gloss paint on walls?
Comments (14)Well I'll be the odd ball out....I agree with your decorator and in fact, I use semi-gloss more often than I use eggshell. I don't do white...I find it boring, but I do like semi-gloss paint in colors. It adds a lovely texture to a room, hopefully one of many since a well designed room should include textures in all forms. My family room is done in a deep green on two walls, and the balance are parchment, all are done is semi-gloss. My library is done in a dep gold/butter (matched to a lion's mane) in semi again. The ceilings are both in different light tones, semi as well. Semi and Gloss have one negative, and that is that they show mistakes or wall imperfections more than a flatter tone would. But they're great walls for art, and do provide that reflective quality your designer mentioned. I do trim in gloss always, but it's evn more important in a room done in semi. Look at several design mags...semi is used quite often, and even the next step up, gloss is used in many homes, not just in the kitchen :)...See MoreThose with painted cabinets....Satin or Semi-Gloss????
Comments (21)Abby Normal--I'm with you! :-) I'm painting my cabs right now, and I've decided I like a little teeny bit of brushwork! I'm using BM Satin Impervo. It is plenty glossy enough! Once everything is painted, and the lights are shining on them, they will be shiny, even in satin. I was just taking some progress photos of mine (haven't uploaded yet). The sun was streaming in the window, and they looked super shiny! So I vote satin! Especially over oak. :-) francy...See MoreHonu3421
