Big project this weekend!

We are finally going to get our screened porch tiled! Yeah!!! We've gotten so much done in this house since we bought it 2-1/2 years ago. The porch is 12 x 24 and is covered and it is connected to the screened pool so we have been going back and forth over what to use as a floor on the covered area. There was nasty old outdoor carpet in a dark turquoise color. It was stained and stinky so one day last year I ripped it all up. And I've been scraping the #%^ glue off ever since! Finally down to clean bare concrete.

After much searching I found the perfect porcelin slate tile. It is totally non-slip and neutral color - looks like sand and has a bit of mica in it for a little sparkle. It also has some darker streaks running through it.

Pressure cleaned the concrete last night and it's ready for tile. Our good friends are coming up today and will spend the weekend and help us get it done! It's going to look amazing! I'm so excited.

And then last night DH totally surprised me!!! Apparantly he has sold some of his shop equipment that he doesn't use anymore and he handed me a wad of cash and said "please go get some new patio furniture"!!! Ummmm, okay, if you insist! LOL!!! How cool is that??? I hope it doesn't take me two years to find it. I tend to take forever to make up my mind on these things. At least I do know what color and style I want. I'll just have to shop for the best buy.

I'll post pictures when I'm done. Better charge up the camera and get "before" pics.

Betsy ~ That is one gorgeous area! Lucky you to have your pool just steps away from your house, and covered too! I take it you live in a warm climate? Post pics of the completed project. I'm sure it will be beautiful.

It sounds wonderful Betsy!!! How cool that Allan is trying to make you buy patio furniture. *S* I bet he can't wait to have friends over to sit around the outdoor table and exchange stories. He can tell some good ones!!!

This is really a great thread! I just wanted to chime in a bit. I just finished planting 140 trees on about 1 acre, and it went pretty well. I planted: 25 Common Lilac 15 Manchurian Crab 25 White Pine 32 White Spruce 10 Bur Oak 5 Paper Birch 5 Silver Maple 5 Black Cherry 5 Red Oak 5 Rugosa Rose 2 Red Maple 5 Red Pine 4 Hybrid Poplar In addition, this summer, I planted 4 larger trees... a bur oak, an Autumn Blaze Maple, a Siouxland Cottonwood, and a Red Splendor Crab It will be interesting to see how fast everything grows. The clone of Hybrid Poplar I planted can grow anywhere from 5-10 feet per year.. while the bur oak will grow at a glacial 6-18" per year over its entire life. In 1996, about 60 red pines, 10 white pines, and 10 black hills and blue spruce were planted on our land. In 2007, the tallest Red Pine is about 15 feet tall, the tallest White pine is about 12 feet tall, and the tallest spruce is 7 feet tall. Of course, these were all started from seedlings with no weed control for the first 3 years, and only mowing after that (when we moved in). We no longer mow the eastern portion of the property, where red pines are growing. There are a few clearings among the trees, and some shrubs are starting to become established. Among them are Rugosa Rose, low bush blueberry, chokecherry, and American Hazelnut. To date, not one hardwood tree has seeded. Under our deck, however, about 6 Boxelder seeds germinated, and one vigorous and desperate sapling is about 4 feet tall in its second year. I will transplant it to the edge of our property when the leaves drop... Otherwise, the land we own on a lake is already forested... and it's more of a question of management than anything. I desperately want to clear some of the underbrush (it's nearly impossible to walk through the woods here... so thick with underbrush). Between the Beaked Hazel, tree saplings, fallen logs, grass clumps, and various other shrubs, if yo'ure not tripping and trying to regain balance, you have several small branches trying to enter your head through your eye sockets. You basically have to close your eyes and bore your way through the woods with your hands in front of you, shielding your face.

No hardwoods underneath the bench so we will have to lay some ourselves - someone had laid some sub-floors there within the last 10-15 years. My contractor told me it looked like there might have a stove in the room at one time. We just re-finished our hardwoods last year, but didn't even think to rip out the bench. At that point, it still seemed like a charming detail. Oh well...live and learn. :)

Hi Barb, I have many antiques and the best thing to do is leave on the original stain and finish, unless the item is damaged. This wash stand and the antique chess table, that I posted a few months back, are the only pieces I restored. The chess table had severe water damage and cigarette burns. This wash stand was very dark and murky and it just didn't fit in with our other stuff. That's why I painted it. Then I decided to strip it (using a sander) and refinishing it to better match our bedroom. I can tell you how to refinish and restore furniture, however, I rather not give advise on antiques... I'll leave that to the professionals. I'd be happy to tell you how to finish other furniture though, as we build a lot of furniture and I do most of the finishing. I never use gel stains, because they are not penetrating and compromise the beauty of the wood. I rather sand a piece down to the raw wood and start over. Joann. Check out the antique forum on GW.

Betsy the tile sounds beautiful. I hope you've got some knee pads for everyone. LOL If you didn't live so far north I'd come up and cook for you all. When we had our home retiled after we purchased it the tile guy tried to talk us into tileing the patio section. I didn't go for it but sure wish I had.
You are going to have a blast shopping for new patio furniture, there are lots of choices. Although everything the big box stores have seems to be dark.

Mrsmarv, yep I live in Florida. We spend ALOT of time on this patio. We call it our family room. We actually spend more time out here than any other room in our house.

Hey Mary Ann! It's great to see you posting. I hope each day brings you more strength and good health! And, yes, Allen is quite the storyteller! Never a dull (or quiet) moment.

Marion, come on up. You could catch a ride on the Magic Bus tomorrow with Marcia and Evelyn! They are coming up to dig up a large camellia I have. Evelyn is going to try to save it. Can't wait to meet them.

Betsy, your pool and patio are gorgeous! How neat to have a screened pool! So does that mean you can swim at night and not get eaten alive by mosquitoes? I love it!
We are driving to Florida in December, maybe we will have to swing by your place and check out your newly tiled patio! LOL!
