Redbazel, we have just enough room for a king bed and two 36" wide dressers. We have a awkward window that we will eventually remove and redo the wall because as it sits nothing looks right.

I'm trying to have an extra wide headboard look that goes from dresser to dresser along all 12 feetish and then something unique above it all. We've got some wonderful views outside our bedroom window so to get any attention at all to the bed, it has to be fairly spectacular.

Do you have an inspiration pic of your plan? Because when I hear what you describe, it conjures up images of the 80's wall unit that had bed and nightstands together--and which my CL is just full of (at least in queen size). Personally I think that may overpower most rooms, but perhaps your plan isn't what I'm picturing. The idea of using dressers sounds great--it's just the dresser/headboard/dresser all one unit that makes me wonder.

Sujafr, I can understand why you would get that impression and I wish it was just that easy. There are aspects of the wall units that I do like though in particular, the lighting, and the "extension" of the width of the bed. I do not like the bulkiness though at all. In fact, we need little/no storage of any kind since most everything now is in our closet.

On another post Geokid gave me the idea to use IKEA's malm furniture. At first I rejected the idea because of the lack of quality. When I went out shopping though at Scandanavian Design, most of what I liked didn't have that much better qualilty. With using additional pieces at IKEA I open up options.

The nightstands at IKEA are VERY small (16" wide), so I thought if I did one of the smaller dressers that would possibly work. After starting this thread, I could see that the 3 drawer instead of the 4 drawer would possibly work out.

Anyway here's the inspiration.

We use the 3-drawer Malm dressers with IKEA glass toppers on both sides of our bed. Plenty of room for a decorative item or two along with current reads and a decent reading lamp. Nice, clean minimalist look and they keep us organized with the roomy drawers. Very good quality IMHO.

Another thought: what about using a very wide headboard (or two) or a piece of nice plywood, like maple, that you could stain, and creating your own wall-width headboard? That would give you the continual horizontal line, but then you could use whatever you wanted for your nightstands.

Something like this, but not all the way to the ceiling. Or you could, if you wanted to be really dramatic. I actually love this first picture.

West Elm makes a plain wood headboard. Maybe combine two small ones to make a very large one. Or make your own like I previously suggested.

For what it's worth, we have various pieces of Ikea furniture in our house and I've been generally very happy with the quality. Really check out the floor models when you are there. You can tell which pieces are sturdier and better quality just by how well they've held up to thousands of shoppers trying them out.

Geokid, I think you understand my vision better then I understand it myself :)

I thought of doing like your pics but thought it may be quite costly to do the entire wall. The thing is, we have a window, that we are planning to eventually remove. By doing wood across the hole thing now, we could "elimate" the window quite easily. This is VERY attractive, since who knows when we'll have extra time to do it with so many other projects going on.

I think we'll hit West Elm today. I liked their selection online, but for me it's always so different IRL (usually better).

Another_Linda, if you have a chance, I'd love to see a picture of your bedroom ensemble. If you don't already have a pic, one that you can see both nightstands in it would be wonderful. I realize rooms don't always cooperate with certain angles but anything would be appreciated. TIA
