Which paint line to use, quality vs price?
Comments (26)I have yet to meet a room that didnt need a decent amount of sanding/patching. Even if it's all small areas, seems like there are always a lot. There are many people that skip the "sand" step of "spackel, sand, paint" and it drives me batty! If you can't be trusted to sand, why would I trust that any other prep you did is adequate! I'd much rather prime myself and do two coats to (hopefully) ensure I get good end results than take my chances and have to end up fixing it again after I thought I was done. Not sure what I'd do if I was repainting a room I've already painted. Knowing it was already patched and primed I might be tempted to just paint, but I'd probably still prime to make sure I got good adhesion. Plus I've started branching out to actual colors lately instead of the tinted white palate. Btw, pic of most of the first coat! I'm not doing the painting this go around, it was in the contractor bid....See MoreQuality of available paint
Comments (7)Pretty sure paintguy is a painter. Can count on unbiased, fair assessments from him based on his professional experience. I'm always amazed at how he manages to say so much with so few words. It's a gift. :) Manor Hall Timeless is a gorgeous finish, love it on trim in particular. Their Commercial White. Name doesn't sound like much, but Yum. Also like PPG Accent Colors in matte - nice option for those deep/dark colors. Both do well with low odor and VOC. Great choices if you or your painter prefers PPG. Comparable SW products would be Duration and Duration Home (matte or satin). SW Super Paint would be pretty close behind. SW doesn't have uber great options for deep, dark colors. I think they got close with Duration deep base, but... I dunno, it didn't rock my socks as they say. :~D Regarding OP's questions, Valspar's premium from Lowe's is a good value, IMO. It's always been a good option if you have to do a big box. My gf just painted both of her kid's room last week with Valspar Prem. It's perfectly lovely. I don't think I'd choose it for my own house, but admittedly, I'm a paint snob....See MorePittsburgh Paint - TERRIBLE!!!
Comments (42)I went to Menards off of 72nd & L st on January 7, 2022 here in Omaha. I saw the PP Metalic line of paint and inquired about it. The manager and 2 others that were working mixed me up a gallon and told me how awesome it looked when they brought it to me. I asked if I needed any special brushes or rollers and was told I did not. I came home and prepared my walls (cleaning and later applying primer) in my office for painting the next day, January 8, 2022. I applied my base coat and after a few hours started painting. This all began at 5:30 AM. My office is a very small space and it took 1/2 gallon for one wall. It still looked terrible. I ended up looking at videos and reading on different forums. Every one giving different directions. I went back to Menards where I had to purchase another gallon of the same paint and actually buy sponges and a faux sponge roller. I asked the guys that were working about all of this and they informed me that they had absolutely no knowledge about this particular paint. They said they haven’t had it in very long and that the representatives from Pittsburgh Paint have never sent anyone out to give them any information about their product. This is a complete fail on Pittsburgh Paints and Menards. You shouldn’t have a product on your shelves if you have absolutely no knowledge about that product and the Representatives from PP should be ashamed of themselves as well for not giving the proper information to the companies they sell it to. I own my own business and I deal with Chemicals on a daily basis. I took classes in order to do my job correctly. Lesson learned. Don’t purchase paint from Menards or Pittsburgh Paints ever again....See MoreWarm white or gray whole house paint color (new construction) - HELP!
Comments (32)@funcolors wow, you might be the color angel I’ve been needing as I drive myself crazy with whites! We’re repainting all interior doors and trim (prior owners left 3 trim colors, some doors that don’t match frames, etc), so we’re looking for a nice clean white. we have BM mascarpone in our family room and love it, so had planned to expand that through the open concept downstairs as well as stairway. will simply white read too stark against mascarpone? In some areas it seems to a bit, and in bright areas it doesn’t at all. We want to be consistent through the house (and my husband doesn’t like idea of mascarpone on the doors and trim and wants a truer white) , and have ultra pure white in 2 kid rooms (their choice!), and simply white is a huge improvement over the trim and doors there now, which look almost brown in comparison. Basically my Q is: Will we regret Simply White as too stark against creamy, dreamy mascarpone? Or worse, will they clash or look like we failed in an attempt to match? thanks for any help! :)...See MoreLori A. Sawaya
