How to paint over 50 yr old polyurethane (shellac?)

Hi, I have to tackle the painting of all the trim in my recently acquired house. It was built in 1962 and I'm assuming the trim is shellac rather than polyurethane. It's very shiny in some spots, a lot of it is very dirty and dull. Some of the baseboards have already been painted. How much would I have to sand before I can apply primer & repaint w/either acrylic or latex semi-gloss paint? Hopefully just enough to rough up the surface? I'm guessing that the primer won't work well enough without the sanding, but I do know that no one else did this step before painting the baseboards (inherited house from family). All painting was just slapped on, I don't think anyone ever heard of primer! I want to do a decent job that will hold up well, but it doesn't have to be the BEST--there are so many other things to do as well that I can't do everything perfectly. It's only a 900sf house but it has been neglected for over 30 years.

Thanks for any advice!
