Primer types question

Chris Stromberger

I have been using an alkyd primer by SW that dries in one hour(PrepRite® ProBlock Interior Alkyd Primer/Sealer). Just noticed that they also sell an alkyd primer that dries in 18 hrs (PrepRite® Wall & Wood Primer). Not to mention several other types of primers.

Question is, what makes one primer better than another? Is the slow drying one going to give you something that the quick drying one won't? The slow dry one does state "Assures excellent gloss and color of enamel topcoats". The quick dry states "Assures uniform appearance of topcoats".

Or, put another way, if I'm painting with oil based enamel (satin sheen), what primer would I want to use and why? What if I am painting oil based enamel but with a glossy sheen (I will be painting both types in different applications soon).

Thanks,

Chris
