Did you try the SW Restrained Gold or Mannered Gold? See my post "SW Restrained Gold? Mannered Gold? Suggestions?" Susans02 posted some great pics of her rooms! The Mannered Gold might be just what you want.

I've had the same trouble with Pittsfield in my two-story entry/living room which has windows facing north and east. If you really want to use the color but want a little more gold you could try what I did. I took five parts of Pitt and added one part of SW Cupola Yellow(just because that was the truest yellow I had on hand). The result was a richer golden tan that held up to the orientation of the room. Just put in on a sample board and have it color matched.

I might use it or may go for something a little more yellow. Haven't made up my mind yet.

liz, have you looked at the Valspar colors at Lowe's? I'm pleasantly surprised with the subtlety of their choices. One thing, though: when you get the paint sample (they sell tiny samples), ask them to match it to the color on the paper, NOT use the supposed formula for the paint. Makes a big difference. I finally found the gold I want (it's a green-gold-tan that seems to be on the walls of many rooms I love) in Filoli Gold Ecru, ftr. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the point is that I found there, finally, something I'd been looking for in probably a *dozen* Benjamin Moore samples, even had 1/2 chartreuse mixed at EK, etc...and there it was at Lowe's.

Can't hurt to try :)

Thanks to you guys, I now have some viable alternatives! I am going to make a point of finding a solution THIS weekend! I am definitely going to try color samples of the Restained and Mannered- I have swatches, but have not tried those particular samples yet. And, I like the idea of mixing paint! (I have actually done that before as well, for a bathroom in my friend's house, and it came out great!) AND, I will be hitting Lowe's this afternoon!

Have you tried Wilmington Tan? It's a warm golden tan, and a nice compliment to Pittsfield Buff if you'll be using it in an adjoining living room. It's deeper than PB, sort of like a bright graham cracker if there is such a thing. ;-)

Don't know if you have access to Devine Paint in your area but they have a color called Devine Gold and it is gold! The "Natural Blondes" pallette has several that could qualify: Ale, Straw, Teak (which is a dark gold).

I wanted a nice gold and use BM Cork. It's great! It's one shade darker than BM Desert Tan which is a very popular color.

I've been lurking on here for months now (usually hang out in the Texas Gardening Forum), so I guess now is as good a time as any to jump in! (Jump in before I start asking for help of my own)

Anyway...Liz, I feel your pain! I went through the same thing with my DR. Tried SW Mannered Gold, Gallant Gold, Restrained Gold and a slew of others. While I LOVED the colors, I just didn't like them in MY DR. I ended up using SW Baguette. I felt like I was settling, just wanting to get it finished, but when the painting was complete, it was EXACTLY what I was looking for! A nice warm gold, a touch of "mustard" along with a little tan. It really surprised me. Don't let the swatch card fool you, give it a try!

BM Desert Tan is one you might want to try.

How are you applying the color samples? Sometimes just "splotching" the color on the walls with a brush does not give the true color and as you said they can all start to look alike.

I suggest using one of the small trim rollers and rolling the paint onto post board giving it two coats. You can live with it in the room, put it near different walls and get a truer idea of the color.
Try BM Decatur Buff.
