Thanks so much Mom..... !!

We had our big holiday dinner yesterday..... 22 of us ! So much to be Thankful for. I am a lucky lady.

it was a lovely Fall day. The guys got the boats and docks out ( three cottages) . The women cooked, and drank wine!!!

Lovely day and evening topped with the Eagles Game for the football types and the Maple Leaf Game for the hockey types...both fans were thrilled with the outcome I was in bed by 9:30 !

Today was Brunch for just my gang ....12 of us.

If Clive is hungry for dinner....he is on his own!

Lars, I think most people have the big day , and meal, on Sunday. It means we can all enjoy the meal and the evening with no worry about work the next day.

Monday is usually the wind down, leftover day....at least in my experience.

In so saying, I realized I didn't know much about Canadian Thanksgiving traditions. My offline Canadian friends just look funny and say, "We eat turkey." (One such occasion might have come after an attempt I made to explain the American electoral college which votes for the presidency--that would be before 2000's tie which gave the world more than it wanted to know about U.S. civics.) So I found an article which seems very clear. I think it's wonderfully practical for the parliament to have adjusted the date to better coincide with the harvest. :) I also didn't know about Martin Frobisher's arctic Thanksgiving. Very cool.

So, what do you eat besides turkey?

Mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, squash, sweet potatoe casserole, cauliflower and broccoli ( with cheese sauce)........NO green been casserole.....fresh rolls, home made pickles. Plus ham , baked beans with mac and cheese in this house...but not most.

Pumpkin pie, apple crisp, butter tarts...

It never changes.....except maybe how we do the veggies

Christmas is far enough away that we pretty much do a do over!!!!

OMG - that sounds wonderful!! Thanksgiving dinner is my favorite meal. Period. If I was a condemned prisoner on death row, that's what I'd order for my last meal.

I'm close enough to the border I could just drive on up every October and invite myself to some of my sister's old friends (she lived in BC for years) and then do the familty thing again in November. Two Thanksgivings........what could be better??

Seriously, a great holiday. All you have to do is eat and watch football!

thanks for the wishes !! I am in Florida right now so it was a different thanksgiving vibe, no turkey ! being Columbus day it did feel a bit like a holiday.

I was in Calgary last year celebrated Thanksgiving.

Yesterday I was with some friends at Tiro A Segno celebrating Columbus Day.

We went to Ikea and had meatballs to celebrate our heritage!

We've switched to Canadian Thanksgiving for many years now. Our family found it was easier to travel in October (having Columbus Day off - which is the same day as the Canadian Thanksgiving), and it's a salute to my Canadian family ties. The roads aren't clogged with travelers, the weather usually cooperates much better than in November, and the leaves are just starting to turn which helps to keep our interest in our 12-hr. trip from Kansas to Tennessee.

Of course, with my Native American heritage, I used to have an argument every year with someone regarding whether Columbus "discovered" America, or simply invaded it. (grin)

Maybe I should start making turkey for Columbus Day, Sharon's meal sounds so good. Of course, I'm not cooking at all right now, the "new" house is torn apart, we're working from morning until 8 or 9 at night, tearing out ceiling tiles and running water pipes and electric lines for the new kitchen. Cabinets will be here in 4 weeks, then 3 more weeks for counter tops. Canned goods and one freezer are at the "new" house, but utensils and pans are still here. No oven at the new house, but no ingredient here, LOL. Maybe I'll have a kitchen again by Christmas...

LOL, I am a week late but wishing a very belated Happy Thanksgiving to all ot our Canadian friends!

Sharon your celebration sounds phenomenal! I love big get-togethers with family and friends.

Unfortunately our get-togethers have grown smaller rather than bigger now that the kids have more than just our family to accommodate and siblings all have in-laws and other places to go. It's so dang hard to get everyone in the same place at the same time anymore!

We were in Niagara Falls for the actual holiday but did our Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. I have yet to master turkey timing - I was way, way off. I don't get how some put their turkey in the oven at 9 and have it done for dinner? I put mine in at 11:00 at 300 and it was finished at 2:00! Overall, it was good though.
I have never experienced an American Thanksgiving but it really sounds like a big deal to the south of us. I find it to be a pretty subdued holiday here.
