Grocery lists on smartphones

So a post in kitchens made me think of this.

DH does most of the grocery shopping in our home. I do about 15% of it.

This has replaced writing it on a pad which ended up awful because no one would throw away the page till every little bit was used up and it's impossible to see what you need when the page is full of scratched out chicken scrawl (we all have horrible writing- lol). Half the time we would find we didn't/couldn't find everything on the list at one store so half the list was crossed out and put back OR NOT. It was a nightmare and we were fighting about it a lot.

Then I discovered ourgroceries for smartphones. I finally convinced dh that if he loaded just ONE app onto his blackberry, it should be this one and he now couldn't live without it.

It is a cross platform app so works on my Droid, dh's BB and dd's iPhone.

We also have a computer in the kitchen so whenever anyone uses the last of something they simply go to ourgroceries.com, which is a link right on the dock although you could bookmark it as well, and enter what they want. It's so simple, even my 6 yr old niece can do it.

Ourgroceries syncs between all the phones and the computer. If one of us is at the store, someone else can add to the list as the shopper is shopping for those last minute items you find you forgot. You can also watch each item being crossed off as it is purchased.

We also added extra 'shopping lists' for todo's in the house like change the lightbulb, fix the screen etc, and for errands.

Best thing since sliced bread AND IT'S FREE and I don't know who created it but they are GENIUS.

Woo Hoo!!!

I'd been using the color notes app on my Droid, but I just now downloaded this. I like that you can cross items off while shopping and sync with the other phones & computer.

I'm a little late to the party, but I also use Out of Milk. It's easy to set up, easy to share, and I like that it also has a pantry list. I keep track of what I've put in the basement freezer, including my backup stock of spices. I can enter things on the website and sync it to my phone, and it's also easy to share with the hubs and vice versa. Service is fabulous, I had a problem with it this weekend and shot off a question, and got an answer within an hour on a Sunday afternoon. Best of all, it's free. Unless you want to pay $2 for the pro version, which I did, because I like supporting the developers when I find something that works well. Cj

I have heard her on the comedy channel on Sirius Radio. Cracks me up everytime! There's another one about "Left-brain people" (I think that's the title) that is hilarious too! Starts out with her saying "A penny for your thoughts," to her husband and somewhere she says "You get what you pay for." lol I'll have to find a link to it... ~Cindy

My grocery list is one of those OCD things I get teased about, but I love my system and it works great for us. I have a list typed up of everything that we get on an even somewhat regular basis. The list is arranged by section of the store (meats, produce, canned goods, deli, etc.). There is room under each section for "other"--items that are rare for us to buy that come up for a specific recipe. We keep multiple copies of the list on a clipboard on the kitchen desk at all times (it is even a stainless-look clipboard to "fit" in the kitchen). The grocery list, a supply of pens, and the dogs' cookie jar are the only reasons the desk exists. When any of us notice something running low, a line is placed next to that item on the list. When we go to the store, we put a check on each line as we find that item. This is the best way I've found to be able to send my husband grocery shopping and actually have him come home with everything I need. It works like a charm.

mtv, back in the day, it was generally cheaper to buy your phone outright rather than to subsidize the phone. When you subsidized, you paid the $100 or $200 up front, but the rest of the cost of your phone was built into your phone plan/contract. When you get to the end of your contract, the you've paid off the phone. The trouble with how that use to work, is that when you pay off your phone, your plan doesn't go down, so you were still paying more for that phone cost for no benefit. You would religiously need to update at the end of your contract to not throw money away. But, now most contracts are on the phone, and not your plan. So when you pay off your phone cost, your monthly premiums reduce, also why you normally don't have to switch plans when to get a new phone subsidy anymore. Depending on that monthly cost, you're typically going to spend the same paying up front via monthly payments. The difference maker is going to be device sales, and reduce priced phones (like older phones, or refurbished).

We have Droids and I knew you could make your shopping lists on it, but didn't know you could cross off items as you shop. I guess I need to stop being so lazy and add that app to all the others my DH put on mine. Thank you for the heads up.

This looks MAJOR cool ---- I just added it to our phones. This will be really useful since we both do the grocery shopping whenever we get the chance. I really like the recipe feature that it has on it. That should cut down on those extra trips back to the store for one more item.

I use something very similar to this on my Droid as well. Love it! I use my camera on my phone to scan the bar codes of products at home that we run out of and it will find the product and add it to the list down to where I can find it in the stores.
