Yes, they're already cooked.
And yes, the greenish smudge is like in oysters.
They're delicious in chowder (if you can't obtain fresh).

When I make chowder, I just open the can and dump it all in, juice and all! Now you've got me wanting to make some...

How come your kitty has to have clams?

Well, she had 4 teeth extracted 2 weeks ago. Lots of complications since... doesn't want anything except tuna (which equals tummy trouble) and is having a hard time eating crunchy food. So, the vet gave me two recipes for home made cat food and they call for clams. I thought I'd start with just some minced clam first to see if I can get a little change in her diet going.

Get some baby food ground chicken...if tuna is her thing, mix soem tuna with ground chicken.
Poor kitty....give her milk!...Maybe some ice-cream.

You can put the clams in the food processor to make it easier for your kitty to eat it.

I wouldn't give her milk, cream or ice cream; cats, not kittens, have a very hard time digesting lactose, they stop producing enough of the enzyme lactase which is needed to digest lactose.

didn't know cats couldn't drink milk...I am remembering all the cats hanging around the milking barn waiting for a treat...
But since they were farm cats, they might have all been young as the life span wasn't long.
When my DH and I were married there was a big mouse and rat problem at the dairy farms...as well as other problems. all the exterminators did little for the problem and at considerable cost. Eventually they changed farm managers and when the new guy and his family moved in.....with their kitties....and he proceeded to vaccinate all the new cats and neuter the males ( visiting guys would do the job!) the rodents decreased to almost nothing!
But I digress.....

I used to buy my cats baby food meat all the time for a treat :) They loved them - especially the ground lamb.

And, forgive me, I meant to say good luck to your kitty. I know how hard it is to see a pet suffer.

Thanks all! We're on the upswing right now I think. A week ago it was pretty bad and I was a wreck.

I knew she wouldn't eat clams but I gave it a shot. I put the rest in the fridge. Will they still be ok for us mere humans to eat tomorrow or Saturday? Just didn't feel like chowder tonight - it's too hot. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice and nippy. :-)

I swung by the store tonight and bought a few flavors of Fancy Feast that she used to not like. For some reason the flavors she used to eat (all seafood) she will have no part of now. Anyway she ate some chicken fancy feast so that's good. Maybe the bad teeth were making foods taste different. I've been marveling at the fact she has eaten so much tuna the last 2 weeks. Before she would only drink a teaspoon of the tuna liquid and wouldn't touch the tuna itself.

I'll try some baby food too and see how that goes.

I'm assuming she was put to sleep during the tooth removal? If it's like people, everyone I know after a surgery, including myself, had issues with tastes and smells for a while. Tasted, smelled different, bad, or bland. I had surgery June 08 and up until then, had always loved spaghetti, now for some reason, don't even want to smell it.

I buy lactose free milk for our cat. Our elderly cat, Motley, and Mischief both had no problem with regular milk when they were younger, but when she got to about 15 regular milk gave Mot tummy issues. So I started giving her lactose free milk with no effect on her tummy, and as a flow on that's what Missy got as well. I feel wierd if I run out of regular milk and have to use the "cat milk" for our consumption, but I know that's silly :-)
