Hope the scan wasn't too horrible and you were able to get in and then get home with a minimum of delays.

(I wanted to let you know on that posting that people were thinking good thoughts for you today, but my posting ability went wacky...)

Ahhh, thanks for thinking of me Pammyfay. As it turned out, after fasting and drinking the disgusting contrast liquid I showed up for the CAT scan at 7:45am only to have the appointment canceled the second they found out I have been in the ER for a shellfish allergy.

In 2000, after eating a rather large shrimp and crab Louie, I went into prophylactic shock (itching, major swelling of face, hives, etc.) and was rushed to the ER where I spent the next several hours undergoing treatment. I've avoided shellfish ever since until two years ago on a cruise I decided to try shellfish again. I figured, hey there's a doctor on board and he wasn't going anywhere. :-) No problems on that cruise or the one last year so I've started eating shellfish again without any problems.

Anyhow, that wasn't good enough evidence for the imaging people and I was sent home with another bottle of chalky white contrast and a prescription for Predinsone and Benedryl that I have to start taking 24 hours before my rescheduled appointment, which is next Tues. morning. Stay tuned.

What does a shellfish allergy have to do with the scan?

I came onto this forum because I am having such difficulty right now with my elderly mom and need help and found this thread. It's been a while since anyone posted, but maybe I what I can offer can help. Several years ago I lost a best friend - he was the brother I'd always wanted. We were 12 days apart and had the same personalities - the good and the irritating. When his widow had to go through boxes of stuff that he'd kept, she called me to just be with her. So, we sat in the garage together and decided what to keep and what could go. I know most people go thru this alone, but if someone can just be there, even if they're just to keep you from being alone, I think it makes a big difference. It was more difficult for me than it would have been for one of her sisters as I was closer to him, but it actually helped me as I felt sort of aimless and lost after doing everything I could through months of his illness. And probably it was easier for Deb to have someone that was closer to him. Plan for a couple of hours in the morning and get a pot of coffee and donuts or a bag of cookies and four to six of the boxes and then plan for a definate stopping time and fix lunch or go out to lunch afterward and talk about everything that's currently going on in your lives. You're not asking someone else to go through the pain you're going through -it's different for them - they're there because they care for you and if they were close to your mom, their healing is at a different level. As for all the scarves, maybe donate them to some group that does crafts for kids in the hospital. They'd really dress up teddy bears or make great kites. Sally

I am with all of you! No way would I live there, and I second what prairie_rose said: But honestly, if you are prepared for it, dress for it, get out and enjoy it, it really isn't that bad. Except, it is still cold. ;) Personally I like something above 60 degrees! A co worker of mine always complains she is cold. But she never puts on a long sleeve shirt, or real socks. All she wears for socks are those shorty ones, like I would only wear in the summer. Meanwhile, I wear warm wool socks, and I cut off the cuff from some knee socks when the foot wore out, and I wear them like leg warmers. :) Nice and toasty! And, Raven, you said: But lately my feet are always cold, diabetes probably contributes. I have on thick socks and always slide into my warm fur lined slippers when I stand up which have thick rubber soles so I should be well insulated. If my feet are cold I feel cold. I get cold from the bottom up. This season, I bought new house shoes, no, house boots! Yup, boots. At least, they are in the shape of boots, fuzzy warm boots, and come up the leg quite a bit, almost to the knees. I can honestly say, they help keep me warm.

Hi Moni...glad you're a little better. I think I am, too. I don't ache as much, although I still have a painful cough and a runny nose. It's a beautiful day here, so I took a short walk, and I do feel better. I made my bed, so I won't be tempted to get back in it. I think I will read most of the afternoon. I wanted to make pho for dinner, as that sounded soothing, and another variation of chicken soup, which I'm a little sick of, too, but as I read the recipe, I think maybe I'll have my husband do something else with the chicken...too much effort for me at this point. I usually don't do much more than complain when I get a cold, but this one really knocked me for a loop. I hope you're looking up, and you'll have many happy days biking in the sunshine soon! I've been out of it, too. Sorry you have to go through that icky-tasting crap again. And I'm really sorry about your shellfish allergy. Ain't that just the pits?

I was scheduled for an abdominal CAT scan yesterday morning to see what's going on in my pancreas and surrounding organs after reporting to my doctor some pain and changes that I've experienced over the last few months.

The shellfish allergy is a concern to the imaging center because during the scan they pump iodine through my veins to add more contrast. If I have a shellfish allergy, that generally means I am sensitive to iodine. And since they don't want to lose me in the scanner, they have to pre-medicate. Not sure what Prednisone and Benedryl do to make it safer, but I'll do whatever it takes to find out what's going on.

btw if you have any kidney problems be aware that the contrast isn't friendly to them...they can give you some script that can help protect them...

i swear i'm beginning to think hospitals and er's are beginning to sound like a script for grey's anatomy...fil has been sent home 2x with erratic bp...
