Bad Luck

Saturday, I was having lunch with my GF from school and a woman of about 80 came in to ask if anyone had a red Prius. She had sideswiped my car trying to park in a space half full of snow.

Tuesday, I was packing up my office and a plaque slipped from my hand (taking it off the wall) and hit my face - have a cut on my forehead (like Harry Potter). DH came and drove me home after the paramedics patched me up.

Today, on my way to the Dr, a kid in an SUV T-boned my car (passenger side, thank goodness). I had to call DH to walk up and get me. We rode in the police car to the Drs office at the Hospital. So I got xrays for my knee which hit the dashboard underside. Police did not give a ticket to either of us.

Tow truck took our car and DH's keys. (DH was too worried about me.) Tonight I knew he didn't feel like cooking, so I said let's go out to eat. Drove the rental car. Came back home and DH didn't have his house keys - they were on the key ring he gave the tow truck driver. Got a locksmith to get us in the house.

Then a friend called at 10:30 to let me know a mutual friend died of a massive heart attack. This sweet man was at least 20 years younger than me. Puts things in perspective! I have stopped beating myself up over my mishaps and the expense.

Oh, my....so sorry things have been so awful for you.
Hopefully things will get much better soon.

My! That was an awful run of events. You could write a movie script based on those happenings.

And you friend dropping over from a heart attack was a downer, too, but as you said, it put stuff in perspective about what has importance. We get to live one day at a time. Each day is a gift.

Always glad to see you too Stush, you're one of the steady ones where the rest of us slackers come and go. I found that if I fiddle with changing keyboards on my phone I can sometimes post on Houzz. Sure miss Gardenweb. I got a Mermaid last year, dont know what I'll get from leaf cuts but I have some rooted and should produce plants soon. If it's a hybrid it will make Mermaids, if a variety I don't know. Maybe Robusta since it's short, or less likely trifasciata. Are you familiar with Mermaid? Had a Frozen but lost it.

For onions, be sure you check with your local extension office to find out what varieties to plant and when. Ask about spinach varieties and planting times while you are talking to them, there may be a regional issue, or you may have had a bum pack of seeds. So you know, I have had good luck with Swiss Chard (Fordhook Giant in particular) as a warm weather alternate to spinach.

Yes, you did good!!! I have some sprouting seedlings of the same cross that someone recently gave me and they are all sprouting too!! I think this will be a vigorous cross and in a few years, hopefully we can all compare flowers!!! Donna

Anyone else have bad luck buying perennial plants from Burpee?

A bit more on the supposed evils of Burpee, lambasted as "cultural vandals" for deceiving poor Dan Hinkley and running Heronswood into the ground. It turns out that after a few years, Burpee concluded the "experiment" wasn't working and offered to sell the place back to Hinkley and Robert Jones for less than half what they'd been paid for it ($5.5 million). They refused. Apparently they were no longer interested in running Heronswood, and an opportunity to preserve the jobs of its workers was lost (wonder if any of those employees ever shared in the $5.5 million bonanza). So I find it difficult to sympathize with either of the major parties to this mess. Burpee was hoping to cash in on the cachet Heronswood had with gardeners to boost their plant business. Hinkley and his partner got to cash in, which was their right, but it was never a realistic expectation that a specialty place like that appealing to a limited group of devotees could ever be "taken national" (if that stated goal of Hinkley's ever existed). Too bad it didn't work out (in its last years before the sale to Burpee I'd noticed that Heronswood's offerings for some perennials I coveted had been markedly scaled back, for instance its once-massive selection of asters. At first when I started reading your post, it was so incredulous it made me smile but then I got to your friend and that was just too over the top. I'm so sorry for so much misfortune coming your way all at once but as you said, everything gets put in perspective. May the rest of the year be an accumulation of happy events.

I grew up in the hills of East Tennessee and I do believe your week was what all of the ole timers used to refer to as a "long strek of bad luck." I really like your attitude and the fact that you were able to put all of this into perspective after hearing of your friend's untimely passing. I do believe that we have those "streaks" of bad luck. I just went through a period where one appliance after the other was biting the dust. Bad things do happen to all of us but it would be so much easier to take if they were spread out a bit.

THANK YOU all for your good wishes. DH talked me into staying home today. Was going to drop him off at metro and go to the store for a wrist brace, but a builder has torn up our dead end street. So I am going back to bed soon:)

I'm soo sorry to hear about your string of bad luck. I was having a self appointed pity party when I e-mailed a friend about it, and he quietly informed me as much as I thought my life was off the rails, he had a son in jail accused of murder. If that didn't put a skid into my day, it made me realize there is always someone, somewhere who is having a worse day than I am.

You have really had more than your share. It has to be all uphill from now on.

So sorry about your friend.

Take care of yourself; Spring is almost here and that also changes our perspective I think.
