Tiki bar style valance for patio door?

Well, we're in the new house. It's a stilt house on an island off the Florida coast. I'm wondering about a tiki bar style valence over the patio doors leading to the lanai.

Has anyone done anything like this?

Any thoughts on how I might construct one, or where I might find pictures of something similar?

No but can we see photos of your stilt house? It sounds so very exotic.

My friend used grass skirts (trimed) for a cute valance. She no longer lives in that house and doesn't have a photo handy, but I found one very similar in google images...

She didn't use the straw hats.

Oceanna - you posted those pics on the thread i started to traditionalgirl1 about her shades and the magnetic rods. I still am considering doing something with the gallery glass. I was doing some more reading on it over the weekend. Any recommendations for sites with awesome patterns? I really like the style you picked for your window. Mitchdesj- isn't that a good price though??! The budget blinds lady told me the roman shades would start at $150 a piece. :( Still looking at those jc penny ones.. Was at lowes friday night and checked out those clip on blinds that are inside the glass. I like them too. I'll eventually figure it out. Thanks everyone for your input!!

Oakley - I get what you're saying. I guess my house doesn't scream tons of color. I do have some candles and other accessories that aren't in these pics but overall my house is more muted I suppose. Funky - Good point about Reno's being more grounded. Those were the words I couldn't find. You're probably right but the thought of dark doors still hasn't left me . . going to wait, going to wait! Natal - Yeah, I've been searching and debating about a rug. Rectangular ones the correct size for under the table seem almost too large for the floor space (ends up too close to the wall with no pic). I may have to go with a round rug. Leah - *Smacking self on forhead* I know what cleats are. :) I'm a little sleep deprived as of late and it's showing. Thanks for mentioning to go to her blog. It was nice looking at all the window treatment pics. Nanny - I'll try some fruit or something on the table. I do have a glass pedestal on the island that we use for real fruit so the fruit may be too much for the table also?

our vacation home faces full west out the back. for the kitchen i did a solar shade, its good enough as your eyes generally look down while prepping. for the dining room window next to the kitchen the solar shade wouldnt be enough to eat facing the window. did a plain old fashioned mini blind.. well, not that mini but not a wide one either. i have 4 sliders in that house and they all have vertical blinds, because thats the only thing that works if you actually get sun into rooms you want to be in, and have the slider function as well. we got rid of the old plastic clacky blinds for something more fabric but still quite light blocking. before i bought verticals again, i looked at real estate listings for that area to see what other homes did with their sliders. EVERY SINGLE ONE, bar none, including multi million dollar homes with everything updated, had vertical blinds on their sliders OR ELSE no treatment at all. which means they took down their verticals to sell the house. verticals were invented along with sliders. sadly the first ones were really pretty fugly, and people took to hating on them.

On one of the older HGTV shows they had constructed one. I remember now, it wasn't HGTV the one I'm thinking of, it was on the Discovery channel when the blonde girl and bald guy had a decorating show where they'd go in and decorate a room in a day. Can't remember the name. I think if you search on the HGTV and Discovery channel sites, more than one of these valances will come up. I know I've seen them on HGTV shows too but my memory does not serve me as to the specific shows. Sorry.

I did check out the website Maddie Lee, and found it helpful. I am going to try the HGTV site now, Brutuses.

Cooperbailey? You were right. I do need to post pictures. I still haven't downloaded them into the computer.

You might also want to browse through the Tiki Central forums for ideas. Some of them take the tiki mid-century kitsch decor to the extreme, but still kind of cool.

Brutuses - Are you thinking SURPRISE BY DESIGN? hehe I remember that show! That was one of the original design reality shows, along the same time Trading Spaces was so popular. Now there are so many they blur!!
