Honeycombs or Roman Shades for Large Bedroom Windows?

I'm hopeless when it comes to window coverings and hoping for some good advice in deciding what to use for DD's and DS's rooms. The old single honeycomb shades are too big and are broken. I was thinking of replacing them with 3 separate shades.

The windows are large - 8' wide, with two 2' casement windows on each side of the 4' picture window. They're not recessed so I'll need to use an outside mount.

I can't get a good picture of the new windows because there's not enough light with the shade down (they won't roll up anymore). Here's an old pic of DD's room and a partial picture of the old window. The diamond pane grids have now been replaced with a cross design on the side casements and no grids on the picture window.

I'm thinking of redoing DD's room and putting the iron bed in front of the windows, if that makes a difference.

Any ideas on what style of window coverings would work well and the best place to get them?

We have a large middle window (5') with two casements, and like our Hunter Doublas double honeycombs for their insulating ability and because they're just about invisible when pulled up. We have a cornice board at the top of the window and grommet curtains at the sides which we pull closed at night. I would think Roman shades would be great if you want them to contribute to your DD's decor, and the fabric possibilities would be endless. But the same is true if you do honeycombs and curtains or a cornice. Don't forget to let us see what you decide!

Thank you, susanka. Do you use 3 separate shades for the window?

I love the look of honeycombs and do like that you can pull them up all the way, but our current ones don't block much light (trying to get DD to sleep in later in the morning - at least on the weekends!) I thought shades might offer more in the way of room darkening but I'll look further into the options for honeycombs.

I am glad I posted as I was for sure taking those blinds down but now I don't think I will. Have you ever seen the "decorative" drapes on the super short poles that go on either side of the window to "frame" it yet it is impossible to draw the drapes closed because they are all scrunched up to be about a foot long on a foot long decorative pole. I doubt I am explaining myself well but i was thinking in terms of this b/c I don't want to ever bother closing the drapes nor do I need to and nor do I want all that material. this kind of "frames" the window. I have seen it on HGTV but can't figure out how/where to buy this I will look into RH...Any other ideas or mind readers out there that know WHAT I am talking about? :)

That last pic is lovely but you do notice there are no wood blinds which IMO are not a good choice in a bedroomthey seem to never really go with the bedding, which BTW we nned to see.

My romans never looked wrinkled. They have a blackout liner that gives them some heft, so maybe that is the difference. However, they allow a lot of light to come in at the sides since they do not sit flush with the window frame. I have roller shades under them, but they are not light blocking since they make the room too dark during the day. I have privacy issues and can't just open everything. I curse my neighbors who refuse to turn off their flood light at night!

I don't have any yet-- it's in design phase. We've decided on fabric covered vertical blinds with an angled top. Seems to have the fewest constraints, most options, and reasonable cost.

You can get room-darkening and even blackout honeycombs. If you go for honeycombs, be sure to check out the cordless ones. Sometimes you can get a free upgrade to cordless when they're on sale. The downside is that the headpiece is thicker (at least, the ones on mine are). Since you'd have to use an outside mount, the thickness shouldn't matter, but on an inside mount, they don't "disappear" when pulled up.

Also, check out motorized shades - they're more expensive, but may be worth if for wide windows.

juddgirl, we have one blind across all three sections. As dilettante says, you might like a motorized blind (not sure if they sell them though for a blind that large). We have a motorized bathroom honeycomb with a remote, and like it a lot. With a non-motorized blind that wide you do have to be careful to pull the cord correctly; if you hold it out too far it can affect the mechanism, although Hunter Douglas fixed ours without charge; it was only a problem once.

On another window that's larger than the maximum HD offers,we do have three separate double honeycombs, and they hang nicely together when they're down; no problems.
