I'm supposed to be attending a family get together/business meeting sometime in December. I'd love to join the CF group, but, as yet, I haven't been given a specific date. May I let you know when and if I finally get a firm date?

Lisa, because the males get mates so quickly, I doubt your shooting will cause him to retaliate. Here's an interesting note about the Van Ert: If you catch the FEMALE in an active HOSP nest, try leaving her body in the box afterwards. May sound cruel, but I did this at my 2nd box site, and I caught the Male within 30 seconds of setting and leaving the trap! I walked away and a few seconds later..."SNAP!" ..."Did that seriously just happen??" The only way I caught HOSP in the ground trap (DRST) was by putting a couple live males in first that I caught with the Van Ert. It was sitting out for WEEKS not catching anything before this. I know how impatient it can make you! Keep up with the Sparrow Spookers! I have used them 2-3 seasons now and not had even ONE HOSP attack occur when used. Just remember the time frame to have it up in. With the 3 big control items: Van Ert, DRST, and Sparrow Spooker, I believe this is the best way to bring the population down. I wish they couldn't nest in evergreens! I tear out and destroy eggs and nestings from these year in and year out. It gets exhausting. ~Tim~

Gina, I will email you when I get home (possibly at lunch). I do not have access to my email accounts here at work. Did you try my gmail account? That one should have worked for you. Bernard will be at my house October 8-18 doing landscaping for me, but it is certainly okay to have the get-together while he is here, although the landscaping will not be complete until the 18th. Most of it will be in the front yard, which we don't use anyway. Kathleen's schedule is similar to Bernard's, and so if we block out those dates, I will have an empty guest room for Eileen, if she wants to stay with me. She can still stay with me while Bernard is here, but that would put one person on the sofa, which is perfectly comfortable as a single bed. I think Eileen might have met Bernard when she and I met in San Francisco and were shopping on Haight Street. We ran into Bernard on the street or in one of the bars. Lars

Hot damn! I get to do my soap box routine about The Garden Conservancy again. . .been a (hyper-active) member for about ten years now, and for anyone who truly loves gardens and/or gardening, it is a dream come true. . . You'll find a link below, but very briefly, here's how it works. One of The Garden Conservancy's missions is to preserve exceptional gardens across America and make them available to the general public - everything from the remarkable gardens of Alcatraz (yes, "The Rock") in San Francisco bay, to Stonecrop Gardens up the Hudson (the home of TGC) and Steepletop, poet Edna St. Vincent Millay's garden in Columbia County, NY (there are simply dozens of others all over the country). Another important mission of the Conservancy is to encourage the idea of gardening by exposing people to actual gardener's gardens - hence, the Open Days program. Early each Spring, a series of regional directories is published ($6.95); in it are listed the days that selected gardens (mostly private and therefore generally never available to the public) will be open - the admission fee is $5 per garden, but members can knock that down to $2.50, by buying books of tickets in advance. Most, but not all, Open Days, take place on week-ends, with several gardens in one town or county being open similtaneously so you can really "make a day of it". . . In reading their newsletters over the winter, I'm getting the impression that they may be cutting back on the sheer number of gardens they offer (the logistics must be staggering!). . .that being said, last year there were 26 Open Days in New Jersey, 106 Open Days in New York ( of which, 24 were on Long Island and another 31 in Westchester County), plus still another 55 all over Connecticut. Do you begin to understand why I get so psyched up about this organization? Glutton that I am, last year I managed to drop in on over 30 gardens through this program, in seven states. . .and it practically begs to be a "group" activity! Just out of curiosity, have you done any garden trips in New York City itself? Being a gardener, and having lived there for so long, I made it a point to discover some of the truly extraordinary gardens available in all five boroughs. How about daytrips to extraordinary nursery destinations, like White Flower Farm in Litchfield, CT or Well Sweep Herb Farm in Port Murray, NJ or Matterhorn Nursery in Spring Valley, NY? My husband and I are friends with a couple. Before we had kids, we would take turns, their house, then ours. When we had kids, they came to our house because it was babyproofed, I could put the baby down for a nap when needed, etc. When they had kids, ours were older so we would go to their house for the same reason, easier to take care of baby at home. Now that all of our kids are older, we switch every other time. Well, except during the summer and then they generally want to come to our house, but that's because we have a pool. When my brother was single and living in another state, it bothered him that he always had to be the one to travel here for holidays. I'm sorry but that's just practical. Why should me, hubby, our 2 kids and my parents all pack up and drive 6 hours to his house that wasn't even large enough to accommodate all of us when he could drive here?

I won't be there in December, but I'll be there in February and I'll expect the 50 cent tour, perfect weather, low traffic conditions and lots of photo opportunities. LOL Oh, and I want to meet Odo in the worst way. I'm sure none of those things will be a problem? (grin)

David, maybe you could come along in February, I'd love to handcuff.....um.....see you again. Ahem.

I'm thinking I could possible do the Febuary thing....I need details and dates. Here, or send me an email, I think y'all have my addy. I'd love to see Annie, Ellen, and Jessy again... and meet the rest of the West Coast Gang.

I'll join Sharon and Woodie at the Betty Ford after next week so I'll be ready for the CA group....last I heard we start the mornings off with Mimosas and Bloody Marys..LOL!

David, Elery and I are flying into John Wayne on February 14, we'll visit with his son and grandsons for a couple of days then I'm free for whatever opportunity comes along.

Since this will be exactly the second time in my life I've ever been on a plane, I figure I should be done hyperventilating in a couple of days, LOL. Then again, if I just follow the examples set by Chase and Woodie and drink lots, flying should be easy. (grin) To heck with detox.....

Gina, I'm behind on emails due to a heavy work load, which should lighten next week. I have a lot of things due by Monday.

I should be able to make the meeting - Kevin and I will be leaving town on December 19 for Texas, and so any time before then is okay. We'll get to see our nephew's daughter, who was born about one year after his marriage. Our niece is having a son in December, and she might be stuck in Baltimore, where she is going to grad school.

I'll touch base with you and Gina soon. I'm guessing y'all will hit LA at least for a day or two....have know idea where John Wayne Airport is. Would love to see you again, meet Elery and the rest of the gang out west. I'm thinking I can make it happen on my end.

What is all this hish hash about Betty Ford and detox?

In all events, I'm looking forward to the December gathering, and if we can work out one in February with visitors, all the better!

David, John Wayne airport is in Orange County. It's a nice airport, about 50 miles south of LA. Gina's favorite mall in the whole wide world, and my beauty operator, are nearby. ;-)

Scott - a couple of us got togther last weekend in PA/NY/NJ and enjoyed a few martinis together, along with some good food and good times!
