I'm freaking out on the counter guys!

Arrrghhh. It doesn't look like I thought. I'm not happy. I thought 1/2" radius would be sharper. They didn't measure from the drawers out so there is 1 3/4" overhang on the sides and only 1/2 over the front of the drawers. Is this normal? What is wrong with me? I've waited so long and with so much anticipation for these counters!

Need some of that wonderful kitchen forum support.

They should have taken the drawers into account. That is their error, and it should be corrected. As far as the radius goes, do you have a sample that you can compare it too? And isn't 1 3/4" too long for an overhang anyway?

My overhang by the drawers is 1 1/2". I'm sure everything will work out. How do you like your counters and what did you get?? Post a picture so we can tell you how lovely it all looks!!

Don't pooh-pooh the suggestion until you think about it hard. But Basalt Slate laminate in the honed finish has ALL of the more desirable traits you are looking for in a countertop---at about 1/4 of the price of soapstone (installed price to installed price, even cheaper if you can DIY). Yes, it's laminate. But, for a "right now" countertop, it'll give you everything you want inexpensively until you can find someone locally in a few years with some soapstone experience under their belt---that is if you actually do want to change out your countertops in a few years. Laminate gets a reputation for being "cheap", but it's still by far one of the most functional surfaces for a kitchen counter. ANd it looks GREAT!

Thanks for the suggestion mama_goose. Unfortunately, all those together won't fit in the wall or would be visible outside the wall. I think I'm going to contact a sheet metal fabricator this week about building something custom for me. I saw a dryer vent at lowes today like this http://mobile.appliancezone.com/ShowProduct.aspx?ID=27&gclid=Cj0KEQjw2v2sBRCazKGu3tSFz64BEiQAKIE1hrUqGkCzH9CteW0uzwboZ0V4dncYi52xzIoiJIx5WSIaApw48P8HAQ and I think something like this would work fine. Just build it where I could cut the bottom of the ducting off and slide it over. The hole would likely have to be offset, but if they're fabricating it, I'm sure we could get it to work.

You can ask them not to make the edge "overly" eased. I think I specified slightly or softly eased, or something to that effect. Our granite edges are definitely not sharp edges, they are eased, but far from as rounded as some I'd seen. They had samples/examples of edges in the fabricator's office, and I showed them which "version" we preferred, and which we disliked. FWIW, when the guy was here templating, we discussed outer corners (eased-square; they were able to "soften" a couple that were too pointy, ever so slightly after install), but somehow we forgot to discuss the one inner corner in our kitchen. It was deeply radiussed, which we didn't want. They rectified it onsite (counter was installed at this point). Not ideal, not perfect, but it can be done. Other things to be sure to discuss before fabrication would be sink reveal, sink corners (ours should have been more square than they are IMO), and depth of counter in front of the sink.

Thanks for your support guys. I am good now with the way the counters look. I'm not sure what is going to happen with all the stuff that needs to be worked on. The woman in charge of that was sick today. There were a couple of problems. There are some drippy marks and a rough spot on one of the counters. I feel certain that can be easily fixed. There is a very rough edge on the bottom of the window sill, and the little ears that stick out on each side (under the vertical trim) are not even. The bar top needed to be completely even with the plywood so that my doors below it would open. It isn't and they hit the little lip when try to open doors. They will def take care of that. Then the pieces where the overhang is too small is up in the air as to what they need to do. No longer freaking out, but still a couple of issues to be resolved.
