SW Paint and Primer advice for old clapboards...
Comments (15)Um, the BLO and turps mix is NOT the reason for the problem. It's a standard, recommended, pre-treatment for extremely old, resinous, (i.e old growth pine, fir or cedar), partly weather-exposed, wood. Besides, that's what's under the still-sticking BM primer and top coats on the other buildings. In my case it is the unsatisfactoriness of the SW paint. The BLO component of the pre-treatment step has recently come into question in some quarters as a possible substrate for subsequent mold issues. However, again, it's under the BM paint with no problems seen. Some people have recently chosen to use organic BLO (it's quite pricey and I don't see a difference in other tests) or use a concoction made partly with Penetrol as recommended by the Forest Service. Old wood -and mine is more than 160 years old - is a very different from modern materials and requires different prep steps. Perhaps the difference between my experience and that of Olhousegal's is that my project preceded the Duration formulation, and of course, I am in a much more severe climate where temps of -25F are routine. The OP and I live in the same region, which is why I piped up with my experience. My steps were the same as OHG's: I painstakingly went back to clean wood, too. That's part of the reason I was so disappointed with the results. L....See Morebest primer for old cedar shingles?
Comments (4)Thanks Christophern for taking the time to reply and share your expertise. Have you used Zinsser 123 on cedar shanks before and, if so, did you have problems with tannin bleed? If we add some new shingles to replace a few rotten ones (brand new cedar, of course) would we want to pre-prime those first with an oil like Cover Stain, since new ones are more likely to bleed? Also, how would the Zinsser products compare to "paint store" brand primers you've used? What's the price difference per gallon there, approximately? Thanks to answers to any of the above and sorry to ask so many questions, but I really want to make a good decision before I spend hours and hours stripping, priming and painting....See MoreBest Exterior Primer for Aura Paint over wood?
Comments (8)Ugh. I just read that both of those primers are alkyd rather than water based. Any suggestions for a water-based primer? I'm really reluctant to use an oil based paint but realize I probably need to. Christopher, is there a reason you suggest the Moorwhite over the other? I think the verticle boards on the wood siding are cedar and the 094 mentioned it was good for that. The paint that is on the house now is water-based, but as I mentioned earlier, it is completely peeling off in a lot of areas leaving bare wood exposed. Will the oil based primer stick to both of those surfaces equally well?...See MoreBest primer and paint to cover water damage
Comments (2)BIN shellac based primer is my one and only choice for such issues. Yes, it is more expensive than the latex products and smelly as well. Buy a disposable brush or roller, prime it with two coats and the problem will not return. Many people will tell you that the cheaper products are just as good but they won't be the ones redoing the work when the stains bleed through cheap primer...See Morepmacbee
