Need suggestions on paint color to turn girls room into boys rm

We are moving into a new house and the previous owners had 2 daughters. We have one girl and one boy and one of the bedrooms has a tufted fabric dark pink wall so that one we are keeping for my daughter. The other room is currently painted haute pink with turquoise/green striped silk drapes. The drapes are gorgeous and custom so we'd like to keep them, however I'm having diffculty choosing a paint color that would complement the drapes that is not feminine. I attached a link to photo of drapes. They look much darker and purplish in the photo but I color matched them in person to SW 6788(Capri) and SW 6738(Vegan). So far, I'm liking Austere Gray or Escape Gray. Any other suggestions? He is 5 yrs old.

Light grays really work well. I used this in our last house when my 2 boys shared a room. They were 6 and 4 at the time. It was an east facing room so it got tons of morning light. It's so neutral you can basically use any colors in there, although I preferred to use navy, red and kelly greens as the main accent colors. Mostly because I had space themed quilts with these colors. I don't have a color name, I mixed my own gray. I'd had a very dark gray oops paint I picked up for $5 and mixed it with white until I got a shade I could live with. Like you, the room was previously occuppied by a girl. It was a nursery and it was painted Winnie the Pooh Honey Pot Yellow.

I don't know your space, but Austere and Escape read very green to me. Is that the undertone you're looking for? Personally, I tend to go for the lighter, warmer grays or barely there. I really like Agreeable Gray SW 7029. A new color for 2011 (I think) that's not in my deck is SW 0055 Light French Gray, it looks pretty online, not so sure about in person. Maybe take a look at Restoration Hardware's Pale Silver. Some of my favorite bloggers from younghouselove.com just did their family room in a very pale gray. They used BM Moonshine 2140-60 mixed in Olympic No-VOC paint.

Google gray bedrooms or just rooms and there's a lot that comes up.

The thing I love about SW, is they do the large sample pots vs BM's itty bitty ones (off the rack, they'll mix bigger ones). I like that even though a color doesn't work out in one room, you have enough in the nearly quart sized can to check it out in other rooms.

Try painting big foam core boards with your colors. Don't forget to write the color on the back. That way you can move it around the room to see how the light affects the colors throughout the day. Also, you can re-use the boards for another room or pass them on to friends/family when they admire your awesome room!

I have 3 kids - my 2 girls are ages 4 and 6, so we have washed lots of bedding in the last few years! I would suggest a quilt or coverlet instead of a comforter. The Company Store, JC Penney or Target quilts have all held up as well as I have needed them to. Keep in mind when your daughter is elementary age, she may wish to make some changes in her room, and the bedding is often the easiest to change, so whatever you pick does not have to last forever. Avoid white or light colors for staining reasons and if you can find a subtle pattern, it may camouflage even further. Your MIL can certainly make some accent pillows to go on the bed - my kids love their bolster style pillows. On other thing that you may consider is adding a row of heavy-duty hooks somewhere that your daughter can reach (or can reach in a couple of years). This would be handy for hanging the PJ's that she takes off in the am and puts back on in the pm or bags with her "activity" stuff like dance shoes and leotards, karate uniform, soccer shoes, etc. Depending on your closet and/or mudroom set up this may not need to be in her room, but regardless, little girls collect lots of bags and love a place to put them. Your room is adorable now. You made great choices with paint and fabric already! Have fun with the little one. Here some unsolicited advice - take it or leave it: Also, don't fret over her moving to a big girl bed - lots of fun things are to come. It is much easier to potty train, get rid of pacis, etc, when they are in "big" beds. One other suggestion to lessen the trauma for her moving to a different bed is to set her bed up in her room and leave the crib in there. Talk up the big girl bed but keep putting her in the crib until she asks to sleep or nap in the big bed. After a few successful naps/nights, then move the crib out. With a new baby on the way, she needs to have some "Choices" and this will increase the likelihood of success. Best wishes!

dekeoboe - thanks for the heads up about the owl! I went to Hallmark today and got the last one. Knock on wood - the 'L' word is really on my side so far w/ this room! The owl was 50% off! And the paint guy at ACE clearly didn't hear me when I said I wanted it mixed in the Essence paint as it is only $14.99 per gallon. I got 2 gallons for both DD's room and mine. I almost fell over when the cashier said $48! He mixed the wrong brand and it turned out that they were out of Essence so he gave me their top of the line paint for $14.99/ gallon! Sue - those alphabet fairies are just perfect! Polly - that chandy is so sweet! I wanted to name DD Penelope but DH nixed that. I really like the bunny lamp and I may have to start trolling around e-bay for something similar. Hellokitty - I was thinking of one or two small pillows - I really like the heart ones that Polly got at IKEA. I have a sweet little white one that I picked up a few months ago that has the palest of pale pink edging and is embroidered w/ 'P.S. I love you' in the same shade of pink. It's so pale you almost don't even notice it. I thought maybe a great raspberry plaid for the rocker seat. I started painting the dresser about 30 minutes ago in SW Berry Bush. I think that the deeper raspberry tones w/ that wall color are edgey but still sweet. Igloo - Maybe we can vacation swap houses like they did in The Holiday! LOL! Yes - I agree - that girls room that is decked out in all those fabulous shades of turqouise, green and white is simply wonderful! That Poster did such an amazing job at pulling that room together so well.
