If you have any concern about how the piano should be positioned for sound, it should open out to the room where people will be listening - as it appears you currently have it.

If you're thinking only about appearances and decor, I can't help you there.

I think you have it positioned perfectly. I think it should be positioned so that the person playing is facing the audience. But I have no musical talent what so ever so I could be wrong. But, decor wise it looks PERFECT.

gibby, my piano tuner told me it could sit either way in terms of the sound since the space is relatively small. Mostly, this is for my children to learn to play and will not be used as a performance piano. So it's more about functionality in the space and aesthetics at this point.

I have also always heard facing out, but since the piano tuner says either way, when your kids are older I can see it sideways with the keys to the left. This is the way the piano's are set when my kids had their recitals. You can see the performer and the sound still goes out towards the audience.

piano with the keys out. When I got there I told her it
looked wrong.
Her hubby quickly ran down stairs to get throw rugs
to place under the legs so we could spin it around.

That's the way he wanted it (he's the piano player)
but she didn't -- until I said so...LOL

I think it would be awkward to have the pianist's back to the room. It's perfect- as is your room.

Another vote for the current arrangement. Did your tuner offer any suggestions about protecting your piano? There are concerns about sunlight, heat, humidity, temperature fluctuations etc. to consider. Your piano is looks beautiful in your room too.

An upright piano usually goes against a wall, so the keys show--perhaps that is what you are used to? Grands and baby grands are usually placed the way you have yours--the pianist would face into the room, not to the wall.

In your room, I think the piano is placed very nicely--the pianist can see the rest of the room and the sound will be nicely distributed.

And can I just say that you have a beautiful dog? (Or is it a he, in which case you have a very handsome dog?)

I agree, the dog IS very handsome and is perfectly placed in your beautiful room.

I think the current position of the piano is correct, as the pianist should be facing the audience. However, I would want the narrow end of the piano sitting closer to the bookcase, and the keyboard end swung out. When the top is opened, you would want people to be able to see the pianist, which is more difficult with it angled the way it is now.

I'm a pianist and the way you have the piano positioned works fine. Seeing the keyboard is nice if it works in your space but it's definitely not necessary.

thanks, all! I've realized what the problem is...it's the placement of furniture. I think it might be positioned incorrectly based on the new addition to the room. We're going to try moving things around this weekend and I will report back with a new and improved layout. I'd love for the sofa to face the piano so that people can sit on it and face it. It's a big piano and should be the focal point of the room, right?

arapaho, there is a doorway to the family room on the other side of the wall, so the piano has to stay in that corner. But that corner gets Southern California sunlight all day long and it gets pretty hot in the summer. Maire, thanks for the link - our tuner suggested we draw the curtains in the summertime and not leave our sliders open. Thankfully there's not much humidity here. This piano is from 1929 so I plan on babying it. :)

terriks, the wall color is RH Pumice. We're actually in the process of re-painting. It's a gray with blue undertones and after a year and a half, I've tired of it. We're staying in the gray family but plan to warm it up.

thanks for the Pip (doggy) love maureen, arapaho and camlam. I'm not sure he's too crazy about the piano though. He used to snooze all day long in that spot and now when I practice I'm interrupting his naps! He's been really tired due to him not getting 20 hours of sleep a day. Must be nice to be a dog!! ;)

The lid should open toward the room and the curve of the harp should face the room if possible. The shape of your room is complex, but maybe the long side of the harp should be a bit more parallel to the bookcase.

Grand pianos are always a bit tricky because the mass is so high off the floor. If it becomes too much of a problem I will take it off your hands.

pal, i closed the lid as we had some hardwoods re-finished last week and i didn't want dust in the piano. I think you're right about moving the long side of the harp closer to the bookcase. It seems a bit far as it is currently placed.

sombreuil, i doubt we will have any singers for voice recitals in our home, but if we do I fully expect them to perform on top of our piano a la Michelle Pfieffer in Fabulous Baker Boys...

You don't have to keep the lid open, that's your volume control :) but when it is open, the opening should be facing the room if possible.

Personally I think the fireplace should be the focal point - if I were sitting in your room that's where I would be more apt to look - rather than an empty piano - even though it is lovely.

I know you said your piano tuner suggested drawing the drapes in the summer. I will second this. We have a walnut baby grand and the wood on the side by the window has definitely faded even though I am careful about pulling the blinds when the sun comes through the window in the afternoon. It must just be the "regular" light that has done it. Love your room and piano!
