Piano placement in living room?
Comments (25)thanks, all! I've realized what the problem is...it's the placement of furniture. I think it might be positioned incorrectly based on the new addition to the room. We're going to try moving things around this weekend and I will report back with a new and improved layout. I'd love for the sofa to face the piano so that people can sit on it and face it. It's a big piano and should be the focal point of the room, right? arapaho, there is a doorway to the family room on the other side of the wall, so the piano has to stay in that corner. But that corner gets Southern California sunlight all day long and it gets pretty hot in the summer. Maire, thanks for the link - our tuner suggested we draw the curtains in the summertime and not leave our sliders open. Thankfully there's not much humidity here. This piano is from 1929 so I plan on babying it. :) terriks, the wall color is RH Pumice. We're actually in the process of re-painting. It's a gray with blue undertones and after a year and a half, I've tired of it. We're staying in the gray family but plan to warm it up. thanks for the Pip (doggy) love maureen, arapaho and camlam. I'm not sure he's too crazy about the piano though. He used to snooze all day long in that spot and now when I practice I'm interrupting his naps! He's been really tired due to him not getting 20 hours of sleep a day. Must be nice to be a dog!! ;) chitown remodel, the bird is peacock that was a thrift store find last year. Here she is (don't mind the empty planter in the photo, I just killed another plant :) ):...See MoreHelp arranging 2-story living room with grand piano
Comments (7)Ideally angling the grand piano would be the way to go. I still think centering it in front of the FP will not read well...............I figured it was too tight to pull it off center and on an angle. I would float the piano - do not put it next to a wall. Think of it this way: your grand piano will be the focal point of the room for all intents and purposes. Not a TV nor a fireplace. When you float it, anchor it on a large area rug. Then arrange the seating to focus on the focal point you have created. I envision the grand on an angle where the sofa is in your diagram. Then you could have a rather large semicircular sofa facing it (seating for 8-10). Create a separate seating area around the FP - two swivel bucket seats perhaps with a low coffee table in front of the FP....See MoreDesign dilemma: need furniture ideas for baby grand piano room
Comments (2)If this space does not need to be a tv room, I would take the opportunity to create a music/library space. Do a wall of built in bookshelves where the accent wall is and get four super comfy club chairs in either leather or velvet, a couple of ottomans, and a couple of end tables. You could group all four together in the middle of the space, or do two groupings, one closer to the piano....See MoreBaby grand piano placement in family room?
Comments (4)As a piano player I would say you need to account for the bench which will not be tucked under the piano and would likely stick out almost as far as the chair you have in the diagram. There wouldn't be any room between the two to walk. I would possibly opt for two love seats (depending on how many seats you would like), or remove the chair and leave the sectional. You could move the chair in front of the window unless you are trying not to block the window....See Morerochellenewman
