Is Fourteen Bucks for a Dooney Bourke Purse Good?

That's what I paid for one today at a thriftstore.

I googled Dooney and Bourke.

Oh.

My.

Gosh.

The.

Prices.

For.

These.

Purses.

I can't find my style (white pebble leather with brown leather trim; flat bottomed, about twelve inches long, eight inches deep with three interior slot organizers) There are rings for over the shoulder straps but there are only handles on the purse.

Is this thing truly worth (new, of course) between two and three hundred dollars?

*gasp*

Even had I known it was a designer (if indeed it is a designer purse) I would have bought it anyway. Anything leather is a good buy 'cause with proper care (saddle soap and water proofing creams) whatever the item is will last forever and ever.

Tell me I did good?

Tell me I got screwed...LOL

My exDIL loved them and thought nothing of paying $250 etc for one. They don't mean anything to me but a lot of gals really like them Congratulations!!

It could be a knockoff. I don't know how to tell if it's the real deal though.

eBay's buyer protection plan is seriously flawed. the most you can be refunded is $175.00! The only way to be completely protected is to buy with your credit card. Either using PayPal or a seller's merchant account. PayPal's Buyer Protection Policy only covers SOME auctions. The logo must be there for the $1000 coverage to be possible. Otherwise you are not covered if the seller empties their PayPal account. USE YOUR CREDIT CARD on eBay! Someone earlier mentioned to only buy from sellers who are 97% or higher. This is a mistake. In school, 97% is great. On eBay it is generally dismal. For expensive handbags you want 99.6% or higher. Most designer purses on eBay are fakes. If they are listed as authentic, this is a problem. If listed as designer inspired it is not. They must be reported for them to be pulled. eBay cannot police thousands of auctions. The VeRO rights holders do report some and so do concerned eBayers but there are still hundreds running at any time. the eBay Discussion Board for shoes and accessories is a great place to learn how to buy designer handbags on eBay safely. I am aslo a purse-oholic and have many sizes in my collection. All my smaller purses are for evening/special occasion only. It doesn't feel right to me carrying a little dainty purse for everyday to do my errands etc. I am picturing my late grandmother with her 4'11" rolly-poley stature and tiny top handle black leather which she carried everywhere! I prefer hobos and large top handles. I do have a small-ish cross body bag I use on class field trips, amusement park, outdoor activities etc. I love my big purses even though I am petite, but don't stuff them either. I usually carry my wallet, small make-up bag (lip-gloss, bronzer, perfume) phone, and whatever item I will need for the day's activity (water, wipes, camera, ipad, etc). I also have a bag insert/organizer that i keep my things in because I change bags so often. I just pull it out and switch!

The most I have paid for a purse was $75 in 1987. I loved the colour of the leather. I bought that purse, loved the smell of it but after I bought it I regretted the decision. It didn't have a handle or strap. I walked a far way from the bus stop to where I worked and the purse was heavy and I didn't like having to carry it under my arm. I still have that purse, looks good as the first day I bought it. Waste of money. I haven't had to buy myself a purse in a long long time but I seem to have a good sized collection. I have a cousin who buys me a purse for my birthday every year and the purses she picks out are perfect except for the one that had so much hardware and metal studs and buckles that it was just too heavy for me to carry. My sister would also buy me purses, I have 2 "Kathy" purses. I didn't know anything about the designer or that my purse was even a "Kathy" purse until a co-worker grabbed it off my arm and gushed over the silver bag. My sister loved purses and bought all kinds, some way expensive and some not so much. She told me about the purse my wealthy cousin gave to her. It was a $700 purse. When my sister died and I was packing up her apartment we came across several purses. I kept a few of them, gave some to my sister in law for herself or my nieces to use. Looking at those purses if there was a purse that cost $700 we couldn't tell which one it was. I gave the ones that I thought might have been the expensive purse to my sister in law but we will never know and if not someone who bought one of the donated purses from the thrift store got a good bargain haha. My cousin confirmed she gave the expensive purse to my sister so I know she wasn't making that up. I can't imagine spending that much money but then I don't have that much money to spend on a purse, some people do.

Target does have some great stuff right now! I had never looked at their handbags before, mainly because I've never been into purses and only bought expensive ones that would last for years (I had a black Coach with the divets on the bottom which I happily carried around for a decade). But I'm in need of something to tote around town, and particularly now that farmer's markets are back up and running. I was in Target yesterday evening and spotted these two... nothing fancy, and right up my alley.

That's what I thought too MsMarion and it could be.
It IS good leather and in good shape. I'm a big fan of good leather.

There is a round leather button sewed to the outside of a duck lying on it's back and the words 'Dooney&Bourke All Weather Leather stamped on it.

It also smells slightly of cigarette smoke and had three bobby pins, two pieces of gum and some linty cough drops under the leather at the bottom.

I think it's a knockoff.

Although it has the duck-leather button sewed to the front there are no other tags attached nor are there signs tags have been ripped from the seams. The brass d-rings and rivets are nearly identical but there is no metal duck medallion or signs of a medallion ever been there.

Oh well.

I'll still use it...

That is what I was going to say (what patti did).....I used to buy the dooneys and they last forever!!!! I now have a coach and so does Sydney......I hate the prices but love the looks and know they will last. Sydneys first one she had the stitching is coming out a bit and I got the email saved to send it in for repairs they do free.....so that is cool.....Mine is super a dk. brown leather that is soooo rugged and tough it will never wear out.....Stacy

I had a DB knock off years ago and just enjoyed it like it was real. :) It didn't hold up very well though. Started cracking in the creases. As long as you like it, that's the main thing of course. Good buy regardless Lori.

Look inside the bag. If it's real, you will see a leather duck logo with visible stitching and a red, white and blue registration number sewn beneath a leather seam.

My bet is that you benefited from someone who cleaned out "Granny's Attic" and didn't realize that her "old" purse was worth $$$.

You got a good deal. I paid $83 for a DB on Ebay. I bought it because a KTer was selling it.

If you are certain it's leather, $14 is a steal! I only buy Coach bags these days. My last two cost around $250 each.

I will look again but I don't see any indication of a torn out tag anywhere in the interior.
I'm sure it's a knockoff but it's well built and the leather is good quality. I saddle soaped it last night and it buffed up nicely. A night with a dryer sheet inside took away the ashtray smell.

I LOVE good leather purses.
The DB Equestrian purses are wonderful!
I think I'll start saving for one now.
Leather NEVER wears out. And if something gets torn, etc any saddle maker can sew it up.

When I used to go down to Mexico (age 15-17) with my Nana and Grampa, I'd buy all sorts of D&B daytimers and purses. They held up SO WELL!
