Next week our old floors are finally being redone

We have been working on our kitchen for about a year now. We had 3 layers of vinyl removed and one was asbestos. Now the kitchen floor and dining room- (can't afford the other rooms at this time) are going to be redone.
Here is a picture of the old maple floors in the kitchen and the dining room floor that was refinished 26 years ago.

Comments (10)We listed our 1905 4-square on a Monday, realtor's walk thru was Tuesday, we had an offer on Thursday. We found out pretty quickly that the husband offerer had played in our house as a little boy. He knew the boys of the PO family and stopped to play every day after school. At our closing, once everything was signed, I gave the husband and wife buyers a binder that I'd made up with all repair info that we'd done on the house, where we'd purchased things, and the history that I had built of POs. I'd met both PO #1 and #2 and had spoken with PO #4 and included all that info. Our buyers were so appreciative of that binder. We ended up chatting for about 1 1/2 hrs - finally the title company kicked us all out as they needed the room for another closing. We're in another old house now and I'm building another binder. When we leave this house, I'll be passing it along as I did before. We believe that we're simply custodians of the old homes that we live in. The houses were here before us and chances are good that they'll be here after us. Comments (34)The floors were a big mess when we got in the house! The front room had really dirty carpet. The dining room and kitchen had old sheet vinyl on top of linoleum tiles. The back den was half ceramic tiles, half REALLY dirty industrial carpet and both of those were laid on top of more linoleum tiles. It was a MESS! We knew we wanted to rip all of that out and unify the entire space with one dark flooring. We were looking at wood, but it was out of our price range. We looked at laminate but heard horror stories of laminates in kitchens and having water damage. After talking to lots of people, doing lots of research, we ended up with a Vinyl Plank that looks like wood. We got it from Home Depot. It's called Traffic Master Allure and the color we purchased was Dark Walnut. We LOVE it. It is so easy to clean and keep up! It was easy enough to install that my family was able to help us do it in just under a week in the entire front part of our house. It was in our budget (which was low) - only $1.96 a sq ft. We had floor installers come in to give us estimates on putting in transition pieces between the carpet in the bedrooms and the hallway, and they thought it was wood it looks so good! They were amazed that it was vinyl. Comments (34)Joy--The floors in the picture are about 5 years old. The new floors will be lighter at first, but will reach that same color in probably only a few months. We shouldn't have a problem feathering in the new wood and creating a new transition. Ptamom--thanks for the compliment on the cabinets. And I know exactly what you're saying about stuff shattering on tile. That's definitely a drawback. We haven't chosen a backsplash yet, but would gravitate toward lighter if we choose the wood floor. ca_mom--the cabs aren't Brazilian cherry and the floors are at their aged color, so unfortunately that's how they will look together 5 years from now. But, yes, the wood is a bit cheaper and the installation is a lot cheaper than tile. That's a bonus! Chinchette--Thanks for the alternate view. It's such a nice space (love your ceramic gecko!), and it's nice to see how well it works with the wood and tile right next to each other. I was speaking to the associate at the tile store yesterday and she too said to NOT put any type of threshold/transition strip between the two. There is a local place near me comprised of historic, restored buildings (1900-ish rather than 1700-ish), and I am drawn every time we visit to the kitchens recreated in these houses. They are very similar to what you've put together (cruder, however, as these are simple prairie homes). Storage requirements were much less: they had no fancy implements, and food storage was limited to few basic ingredients. As for counter space - they didn't know they needed it :). I would lean more towards this direction, but DH thinks I'm cracked. The one thing that would drive me crazy is the lack of landing for dirty dishes/clean dishes around the sink. 10 years agoWe do have one water spot where it is darker...I cannot get a picture of that yet. The pictures are of the kitchen and dining room and they have 2 coats of Bona amber sealer on. Tomorrow 2 coats of Bona Mega floor finish will go on.
