The age-old curtain hanging question...

I'm ready to hang curtains upstairs and I'm debating how high to hang them. Each room will have these blackout cellular shades in them with curtain panels on the sides. The shades are mounted just a couple inches above the casing so that they do not block any of the window when open. Should I place the rod right above the headrail, or should I place it higher? For reference, there is about 10 inches between the top of the headrail and the ceiling. It seems as if the "dead space" debate comes down to personal preference for the most part, but I was hoping to get some thoughts on my specific situation anyway. Also, I don't particularly like the headrail so I was hoping to draw LESS attention to it if at all possible. I wonder if hanging the rod right above the headrail will accomplish this, or if more distance between them would be the answer? This particluar room will have a brushed silver rod and large Buffalo Check curtain panels (in blue). Thanks for your opinions!

(Sorry, I can't seem to get the pictures smaller!)
