Ereader to reduce book clutter

Last Xmas I received a Litterati ereader. I was excited because I thought it would reduce "book clutter" in my houe. I usually have 10-20 library books checked out and scattered around. I have not been able to get it to work with my town's library sytem, even though the system has detailed directions on how to check out ebooks.

So, this Xmas, I am starting to think if I got a Kindle or Nook it might be easier. They seem to be the two that are "winning" the ereader race.

Am I just deluding myself? Would it be another $100 wasted?

Wish my library had a system. Until then I'll just read them the old fashioned way.

P.S. My sister's Kindle doesn't work with her Library system

I have a lot of stuff on my kitchen counters, but I don't consider it clutter as we use it, like the toaster oven, the can opener, the cylinder full of utensils, hot shot, etc. Clutter to me is stuff that has a place, but isn't in it. We have only a few corners of clutter where they're supposed to go...like on the desk area in the kitchen with bills, catalogs and junk mail; like coats hanging on the hooks in the mud room that aren't hung up in the closet; like stacks of papers in the in box(s) on DH's desk. For the most part the clutter is kept at bay. Mainly because we both like the look of the rooms when they're neat and it does keep it less stressful. But we also designed in places for things to go. When we run out of room, that is not the sign to add more spaces, but the sign to clean out the existing ones. To ellendi and others with a coat issue, I'd suggest a 2-point tackle...1) add coat hooks where it's convenient to the door so you don't have to open the coat closet to hang them up and 2) tip the dining chairs on their side for a few days after installing the coat hooks so they can't be used as an alternative to the hooks until the new habit is formed. My gf lives in a 4 br colonial with the basement level garage, which only has room for 1 car as the other is full of stuff. Then you walk into the hallway which is very narrow as it's lined with stuff on both sides, past the laundry area which is stacked with unfolded laundry and around the corner to get to the stairs that go up. I never say anything, but every time we go through there, she makes a comment about needing to get to it, or about who's stuff it all is or whatever. I know it eats at her and stresses her out. She certainly doesn't need more stress in her life. I'd even offer to help her clean it up and organize it so the simple act of coming home doesn't cause her such fret, but I'm afraid she'd take it as criticism. Mind you, her adult son is living at home post college so is strong and capable of helping her with the heavy lifting. But somehow...an issue common to women?... she feels as if, as the mother, it's her responsibility and she doesn't enlist her children's help. And that is really the point of reducing clutter...the simple act of coming home should be welcoming, not stress inducing. Here is a link that might be useful: Why mess causes stress

Honestly, yes, taft, just get it out any way you can. Seriously--you are in charge, not the stuff. That's my "Take It Out Back and Smash It With a Hammer" philosophy. Here's another one of my theories: I call it my "Stop Me Before I Kill Again" theory. It will all end up in the landfill anyway. Eventually. It will wear out, get broken, become so out of date nobody wants it. Everything. Seriously--everything. It all goes in the garbage eventually. Just like--we all die. What the end will be is never in question. It is just a matter of time. And, more important, it is a matter of how much good or evil we do (or the stuff does) along the way. Right now that stuff in boxes is evil. Remember your words: "I was feeling so hemmed in by the stuff in this house I couldn't take it anymore. " That's evil--that's what that is. That stuff is a little (or big!) piece of evil in your life. You can't move; your home doesn't feel welcoming; you look at it and feel horrible about yourself. That's evil. Seriously, it is. The stuff is crying out: Stop me before I kill again! So, you have two choices: rehabilitation or execution. If you can rehabilitate it (give it away to someone who will use it; get it into a recycling bin; sell it for money) easily, that's a sensible move. But will it rehabilitate? Will the cost--emotional cost, time cost--be prohibitive? Do you want to find someone who takes "stuff" and sorts through it to find stuff they can sell on eBay? (an eBay entrepreneur?) Do you want to give it to a thrift shop somewhere, so they can see if they want anything? Do you want to pay your college-age/teenage son/neighbor (or maybe your neighbor's cleaning lady) to go through it looking for stuff like money or photos? But all that sounds like a lot of work, with little guarantee it will be viable. Remember, the stuff will continue to work evil while you sort through it. So just toss it. If you're pretty sure you won't lose a $10,000 bearer bond, or something, just throw it out. (I found $40 in cash in a box I sorted through--but it was just one box of sorting. If I had 18 boxes, and someone said, "would you pay $40 to get rid of them?" my answer would have been yes. So you might not need to be that concerned about what's in them.) Good luck! OH! Here's one other option to consider: Let this forum be your discipline. If you want to, you could decide that every day you will eliminate one box. Every day. (Or, OK, every Saturday, you'll eliminate 3 of them, minimum.) Post here, and tell us how you're doing. (Or, make that a real-world situation, which will be more powerful, even: If you've got a good friend, ask her to come help you sort through 5 boxes every Saturday morning; you'll buy donuts if she'll help you. Even if all she does it sit there and say to you, if only by her presence: "Hey, I gave up my Saturday morning to help you get rid of boxes. Get off your bum and get rid of some boxes; don't waste my time." Don't have a friend? Hire a cleaning-lady-type person for a Saturday morning, several weeks in a row, and get boxes, trash bags, and directions to a donation place in place before you start.) Go get 'em, taft!

I usually hang out in Kitchens but just popped in here to find this. Interesting discussion. Personally, I think the author is a selfish witch to want to burden her children with all this. I'm on year 5 of attempting to curate the possessions my parents left me, determine what has sentimental value and actual value, which things to keep forever to pass down to my children (with their input of what they would want), and sell or donate the rest. My house is not my own due to all the boxes. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. It is taking me forever because it's emotionally overwhelming and the sheer huge number of items takes time. And all this is after two garage sales of all the items that were clearly not sentimental or valuable. And two family work days in which they have already taken the items they want or have room for now. As I go through these items, I'm photographing items and scanning photos/letters/documents with the idea of creating photo books full of the photos and family stories/history. I will leave these for my children. I am also trying to value items that I intend to keep and will leave my children a notebook with photos of the items so they know as much as possible about the specifics of the item (value, date/country of origin, history of why it's in the family, etc.). This will make it easier for them to make decisions when the time comes. My mom would periodically tell me these things but even though I requested she write it all down numerous times, she never did. I'm not sure how accurate my memory is so I'm struggling to do the best I can on this but it would have been so much more accurate had she done it herself. Due to having to deal with this mess, again, i would never burden my children with this. I bought my parent's home. I have the luxury of time and space to do this. It is highly likely my children won't. Neither live locally. My son works overseas and will likely remain an expatriate. They will probably need to make quick decisions that would result in the loss of family history if I don't get this done. In the end, my goal is to leave them with several different printed photobooks with as much family history and stories as I can gather and include. These will likely be divided into: maternal history from great-great grandparents to when my mom married my dad fraternal history from great-grandparents to when he married my mom my parents life together my life before marrying my husband my husband's life before he married me our life together up to the point where I actually complete this project and create the book I have also gathered up and organized all the school papers, art projects, and such I kept from their childhoods and will create a book of photos and stories about them from birth to high school graduation. I'm doing this more for their children's enjoyment (if either ever have any) than for their own but I'm sure they will enjoy that, too. Once these are done, I'll print three copies, one for each of my kids and one for me. I will also gift my nieces the books about their grandparents. My goal is that they will simply need to look in the book listing the items in the house to determine what they want to keep (and then they'll know everything possible about the item), and be able to make quicker decisions about what's worth trying to sell to collectors or eBay or whatever, what is garage sale, and what items should really be donated to a couple of our local museums. If they're not in a position to keep any or most of the actual items themselves, they'll have the books. That's the most important thing to me anyway. It's not the items themselves but, rather, the family stories and history behind them. I just hope I live long enough to complete these projects! So very time consuming.

I have been "ruthlessly" tossing out items the past week or two. This small house is packed to the gills and it's suffocating me. I had a large Rubbermaid container of Bride and Groom figurines? They all went to the thrift store (from whence most of them came). I brought up three large containers from the basement/dungeon and pared them down to one small box. I have a wonderful vintage Singer 15-91 that I am keeping; but the broken down, not rare nor valuable Singer cabinet #72 it was in is out on the porch waiting to be picked up by a FreeCycler. I have a slot for the machine in the sewing room closet and I will find a good carrying case for it. My sewing room is small. I have one larger sewing cabinet I'm keeping. Letting this one go cleared up a 2 ft. x 2.5 ft. square of floor space. It also forced me to trash or file the papers that were parked on top of it. Purses - I had far too many, and have carried only one tried-and-true purse for the past two years. I purged them down to where they fill less than one-third of one drawer in my dresser. I had to weed out a lot of far-too-small/old/ugly sweaters to make room for the purses. I may weed them out again in the fall. Paper is my biggest problem, but I've made some good headway there, too. Next up to the guillotine? Hats. 1940s-50s hats. Cute, beautiful, wispy, veiled, feathered, flowered...you name it. They are everthing except being worn. I may put them on FreeCycle, but that takes a lot of time, or just take them to the thrift store too. I am keeping my Grandmother's wedding hat, and two veiled velvety beauties I wore in the 1980s, The rest are Bye-Bye. I tossed out one of my three Deviled Eggs Plates. I might put a second one in the box before I drive off to the TS. We do not eat that many deviled eggs! "Breathing Space" is my mantra.

When DD bought me a Nook last Christmas, we first checked to see that my library system had download capability. they did. Just recently our library has added the Kindle system. I love my Nook, but I still check out hard back books too.
Could you take your ereader to your local library branch and get someone to help you with downloading their software or whatever you need to do? Before you spend the money on a new ereader?

Our neighborhood Barnes and Noble trained the local librarians how to help library patrons use the Nooks to successfully download books. Perhaps a phone call to your Barnes and Noble will point you to a librarian who can help you with a Nook. I have a Kindle, and I guess if you want to download all free material it is acceptable.... but I could not see purchasing an eBook when the legal rights to published materials seem unclear... But Amazon books are too expensive. I wish I had purchased a Nook.

OT ~ There are loads of free books on the kindle. There are also loads of low priced books. When you view the top 100 best seller list you will find a button at the top right hand corner for the current top 100 free kindle books. Click on it to reach the list. Kindle also supposedly now will work with some library loan programs.
I haven't used it yet cause I am spoiled and have had a long list of books waiting on my kindle to be read.

On topic ~ Getting my ereader did help me control my book clutter (not reduce the amount I spent on books). We had at least 6 - 5 shelf book cases in the house, all stuffed to the gills. The books were stacked two deep and all the space on top of the books were full. It was either get a kindle or buy more bookshelves. At the time it was admittedly a splurge. I love it! We have since gone through all our books, given the good ones to our young adult children along with a couple of bookshelves and donated the rest, bookshelves and all. I love the space I have reclaimed, I love the easy access to a book the second I am done with the last one and I love that it fits into the my purse and goes with me everywhere. There are so many times I find myself waiting somewhere and am thankful my book is always in my purse and doesn't weigh a ton.

If you get an ereader can you bear to release some of your books?

I have a Sony eReader, and I can download my library's books just fine. I am trying to checkout/buy only ebooks simply to reduce my clutter. If you go to the "mobile reads" website, or do a search for Literati ereader and library books, you should get some help on how to download your library's books.

I have found my Kindle to be great for holding my genre reads (mysteries, urban fantasy, science fiction) especially anything with a gazillion books in the series. So yes, if you like your e-reader and especially if you like genre fiction, it's a good way to reduce clutter.

You might try in the Computer section of GardenWeb, some folks there have the cheaper ereaders/tablets although a quick glance seems to indicate that the Literati has pretty limited functionality so "borrowing" from your public library may be impossible.

I have had my kindle for a couple of years now and would not be without it. I did reduce my book clutter by taking all my books to the public library. They were glad to have them, I was glad to have the space on the shelves for other stuff, a big win/win for all. I only kept some of my cookbooks and they may not last long. I am in need of some more space.
So having an e-reader is an excellent way to reduce clutter.

Speaking of Kindles and book clutter, did you know you will NEVER see any of the Harry Potter books on an ereader? Why? JK Rowling (the author) says books must stand on their own. She will only allow print versions of her books. For that, I say "hurray". I love the feel of books, of turning the pages, and then setting a beloved book on a bookshelf. Why else do people keep bookshelves? Not because they want a mini-library in their homes. They want the comfort of being surrounded by the literature and texts they love. Hobby books show a person's interests. Then again, books do create clutter. Years ago I went thru all my high school and college books. I donated or threw out almost everything. Who needs a 1960's version of How to Study for the New York State Algebra Regents exam? I passed that class a LONG time ago. I ended up keeping only ONE book, the Complete Works of Shakespeare. Yes, all the plays and sonnets.You can't throw out Shakespeare!

I am not sure about the abilities of the Litterati ereader but many of them require the use of Overdrive to be able to access the library for library books, here are the instructions for Overdrive, you must of course also have a library card.

My local library works only with the Nook. Any ideas how to get around this? My daughter gave me a Kindle for Christmas. I'm having lots of fun with it. I found a good way to get free books on kindle, go to the Kindle store, then under "search" simplly type in 0.00. I got a list of 206 free books. That should hold me till my next trip to the library.
