Granite or metal piece behind range?

This may be a silly question. But what would you do?

Stainless piece up to wall behind slide in range on perimeter cabinets.

Or, granite behind the slide in?

I think the granite will look nicer but the stainless will allow for more options should the range eventually need replacing.

What kind of range? What kind of decor? For a pro stainless range in loft style decor I'd do the stainless. Maybe a shelf too.

For "ordinary" American home kitchen with a slide in range, I'd do the granite. If there are no uppers, in a traditional kitchen I'd do a nice curving shape with an ogee edge, for a romantic look.

With a slide in, you have a little margin behind, so there's room for the stone without trapping the range, right?

All that said, I'm not a particular fan of decorating with stainless, so generally only like it in very defined settings (diner style, loft style, or certain kinds of farm/crafts style) and not with granite. I'm assuming the counters are granite?

Thanks pllog. Stainless slide in electric range. Granite countertops. We do have uppers.

Apparently we have a little margin behind the range. We have not received it yet. But I'm not sure about the trapping the range part? Hopefully not! :)

I am with you on decorating with stainless. DH likes it ALOT more than I do.. I was mostly thinking about options later on. But I do think the granite will look nicer with our house. Just an "ordinary" home!

We are doing a hood under the cabinet above range. But the idea of a stainless shelf does sound nice. I don't know if it would be too cluttered or low though.

sarinad: Yes, it's possible and not too messy even if the top is in one piece. Before calling a stone technician, I'd verify the cabinet dimensions. Because the sides of the existing cutout may need alteration/polishing too, I'd have the Wolf on site so you can avoid the expense of two trips. I do stone alterations for appliances all the time. I much prefer to see the thing in the hole with my own eyes before I leave.

The stainless blends seamlessly and lets you replace the slide in with a free standing range later if you need to. If you do the granite, you need to have a granite fabricator come out and remove that granite bit to be able to do any other kind of range. Plus, you also need to engineer some type of ledger board at the wall for the granite to rest on, and you'll have two seams to either side. You only get a "notch" in the counter with a slide in if you are willing to have the hole cut on site and pay for all of the waste that you'd be cutting away.

Thank you to everyone for all the feedback! This has been awesome. Mcps, that looks really great with the glass and tumbled marble combo with the blue pearl. I would not normally think that those would go so well together. They do make small 2 x 2" glass tiles in the same family, although I think just the lightest blue. That light color is actually a very pale blue and not white, although it looks white on the computer screen. If I go with the stainless, I would use them sparingly as we did with accent tile in the half bath. Just need to call Lowe's and find probably 4 more sheets of the glass mosaics. They seem to be very popular. Example of accents in the bath:

How is the granite filler strip behind the range attached?

DON'T TAKE THE GRANITE STRIP OUT! You do not have to use the metal strip that comes with the new slide-in stove, it is an optional piece (for somebody who had a free-standing stove to begin with). The back of the stove top will just slide over the top of the granite strip already in place--just like it did with your old stove.
