How is the granite filler strip behind the range attached?

I am in the process of replacing my slide-in range. Unfortunately, it seems like the size of slide-in ranges has ballooned in the past 10 years and I no longer have enough depth in my cutout to fit one. The range I am looking at comes with its own filler strip to put behind it, but first I need to get the granite one out. Our current setup is granite counters on each side, with a small (1-2") granite filler strip directly behind the range. I can see that the granite is seamed at each end of the filler strip. I can also see that they've screwed little pieces of wood into the cabinets on each side that this little piece of granite is resting on.

If I remove the wood supports and whomp the filler strip with a rubber mallet, will that be enough to get it out? How strong are those seams? If not, what do I need to do to remove it? Cut the seams? If so, with what? My appliance store will not touch a granite countertop for fear of damaging it, so I am on my own for this. Thanks!
