Granite or metal piece behind range?
Comments (2)What kind of range? What kind of decor? For a pro stainless range in loft style decor I'd do the stainless. Maybe a shelf too. For "ordinary" American home kitchen with a slide in range, I'd do the granite. If there are no uppers, in a traditional kitchen I'd do a nice curving shape with an ogee edge, for a romantic look. With a slide in, you have a little margin behind, so there's room for the stone without trapping the range, right? All that said, I'm not a particular fan of decorating with stainless, so generally only like it in very defined settings (diner style, loft style, or certain kinds of farm/crafts style) and not with granite. I'm assuming the counters are granite?...See Moregranite backsplash behind slide-in range question
Comments (2)Our slide-in required about a 3" piece of granite counter top behind the range. We supported this with a 2x4 cleat screwed into the wall. The granite backsplash rested on this and was "glued" to the wall. Don't know if this picture will help, but it shows a full backsplash behind the slide-in. Note that the back splash is actually 3 separate pieces, one over each of the base cabinets and one behind the stove. If this can support a full height backsplash, I see no reason an 8" one can't be done. Comments (20)I am a fabricator. if the seam is silicone caulk (it'll be soft) you can just cut thru the adhesive with a "Stanley" knife or equivalent. You may also need to cut the joint between the horizontal piece and the splash. If it's epoxy the easiest way is to saw it out but you'll need a diamond blade and someone handy with a circular saw. You'll also want to trickle water on the saw blade while it's cutting to keep the dust down and have a vacuum hose at the cutting point to suck the dust. Do not try to bust it out; you could easily break the stone on the wrong side of the epoxied joint. Easiest for you is to get a fabricator....See MoreWall Behind Slide In Range
Comments (6)In answer to your question --- are these common? --- yes, as Shannon says, they are common. There actually can be two possible issues when replacing your current range with a slide in. One is what is discussed above, which covering the vertical gap in countertop backsplash that used to be filled by your free-standing range's built-in backsplash. The other can be horizontal gaps when your new range's top isn't butting flat against the steel plate on the back wall. (This can be caused by all sorts of things including an uneven back wall or just the design of the range -- some slide-ins have bump outs in the lower back of the range which result in the stove stop sitting forward of the wall.) You can buy trim pieces to cover the gaps at the top either as an accessory if offered by your stove's maker or from a company like MicroTrim. You might prefer a bolt-on pro-style backguard vent riser. Those used to be only for premium-priced pro-style stoves but even the likes of Samsung now seem to offer versions for their slide-in ranges. While helping a friend, I recently ran across these examples on a Home Depot page. Also, IIRC, I'm pretty sure some big box or hardware stores stock off-the-shelf backsplash plates with an inch-or-two-wide lip across the bottom edge. That can cover horizontal gaps at the back of a slide-in range going against a wall as yours will and you might only need to buy and install one piece.....See Moreashef
