Follow Up: DH birthday dinner

Thank you all for your kind responses to my post. DH's birthday dinner went off without a hitch. There were 20 of us, and the restaurant staff was phenomenal. They printed up a beautiful menu for our guests with the appetizers, salad, choice of one of three entrees and choice of dessert. The wine flowed very freely, as did the cocktails. Even the seating worked out nicely. Although I didn't have placecards, as guests showed up I was subtly able to seat couples near matches that I thought would work. In hindsight, I'm glad the difficult couple didn't show because I know there would have been some issues with where they were seated, the food, the drinks, something...

After dinner, 4 couples came back to our house and I served a variety of cheeses and savory crackers. I have to go back to the cheese shop I went to again, because the selection the owner gave me was outstanding, but I was in such a rush I just trusted her and didn't really ask about what she gave me. I had a few bowls of mixed nuts, and then candy. Small bowls of dark chocolate m&m's, jelly beans, mike&ikes, etc. Afterall, it was a birthday party.

So, thank you all again for your advice.

sounds lovely....and perhaps the "difficult couple" just knew they wouldn't fit in.
And I hope the Birthday Boy was pleased!

AM, that does sound lovely, and I'll bet your husband was happy with his party.

So what were those "three entrees"? And be sure to find out the type of cheeses. We want to know these things!

Low and slow are the key words. If you can only buy one book, buy Cookwise by Shirley Corriher. Meanwhile, here's an excerpt from a Q&A site on cooking: "Shirley Corriher, author of Cookwise (Canada, UK), and Chris Kimball, publisher of CookÂs Illustrated have come up with a slow-cooking method that also produced a delicious brown crust. First, they sear all sides of the meat in a hot skillet on top of the stove. They season the roast with a little salt and pepper, place it on a rack in a roasting pan and slip it into a 200Â°F oven, where it cooks until it reaches an internal temperature of 110Â°F (45Â°C). At that point, they turn the oven up to 500Â°F and continue cooking until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 130Â°F (55Â°C), which should take only 10 or 15 minutes more. Raising the temperature after most of the cooking is done gives you a deep brown crust very fast, Corriher says, because protein- and sugar-laden juices that came to the surface during cooking evaporated, leaving a high concentration of proteins and sugars that brown quickly. @gerina, lh, mattie and FD, First, the bday party was fine. No fireworks, no confrontations, like I posted above, I treated BM like an invisible woman. It was held at SD's home so she invited whom she wanted. Yeah she paid for 1/2 of the party but so did I! Not my place at all. I'm sure SD invited her because she is trying have us "all just get along." Why BM keeps showing up is a mystery to me other than these functions are being held at her daughter's home, which is not a good enough reason. I basically told DH afterwards that I will not go to any more functions where BM is present unless they are major like a wedding or a funeral. They don't understand boundaries and why BM keeps her hand in is the weirdest thing to me. DH clearly doesn't want to rock his adult kids boat. Why they want to keep her in OUR mix is beyond my understanding. Father's Day was a whole different situation not surpisingly. I did not call his adult kids or even text them about it. DS7 had a gift he made at school, I gave him a gift and DH even got a joke gift from our dog. No gifts or cards from the adult kids. Just a text from SD and a call from SS. DH later called SD. I'm not family soooo...I left my two cents out. DH was happy with the gifts from DS7, me and the dog, we went to a nice lunch and kept it moving.

Wow, with a few decades of history, it's really hard to offer any advice. I think the first thing is to deal with your depression. Talk to your doctor or naturopath about healthy choices that can help you with your mood (eg - nutrition, exercise, B vitamins - or, if you think it's too bad for that to help, antidepressant medications). Then do something that makes you take notice of yourself and feel good about YOU - take a weekend away with a friend at the spa, start a new hobby, get a sassy haircut. Maybe that will remind you that you deserve to be treated well and give you the confidence to make it a requirement. When you talk to DH and/or the kids, make sure you're using "I statements" and keeping it relevant to the current situation. It's OK to say "We have a long pattern of [undesirable relationship attribute]," but make sure you use an example from the past 6 months, not from when the kid was 13. Try to find simple and concrete actions that everyone could do to help with the problem. Saying "I want to be treated with respect" isn't very helpful for getting a disrespectful person to change their ways... But maybe saying something like this would be more helpful, "I would prefer that if you have a gripe with me, you approach me directly to resolve it instead of talking to others first. If you're not comfortable speaking in person, then phone or an email is fine too." When it comes to your DH, I don't think you'll have a lot of success in saying "Look, Hunny, your daughter is a selfish beeyatch, so stop defending her and make her treat me properly." I think you'll have more success in saying "Now that most of the kids are out of the house and on with their own lives, I think you and I should do some rebuilding on our own relationship. Being an empty nest and negotiating the landmines of an adult blended family is different that the situation we were in until the kids moved out. Let's make a weekly date night to focus on each other and our relationship. Remember how we used to love [activity - eg playing cribbage, making dinner together, going to movies]? Let's pick that back up again!" Maybe a reminder that he is in a relationship with you is what DH needs. Maybe not? I don't know.

Glad you asked Annie!

Antipasto - calimari; arancini, tomato, red onion and basil crostini; roasted garlic and shaved piave crostini.

Don't know about the cheeses at the "afterparty". Two were soft - one a very creamy brie and one more of a goat cheese with a vein of blue cheese. One of the hard cheeses tasted like a mild swiss with a nutty kind of thing going on, and the other I completely can't remember.

I think the birthday boy was pleased. He was very complimentary after everyone left. While he claims he's not one to savor the spotlight, I think he secretly enjoys it very much. And he did send out an email thanking everyone for celebrating with us with lots of kind words for me. Always nice to be appreciated.

Good catch, Jessy! Since DH and I were the only kosher ones at the dinner, we caved on the calimari. I had some (shhh!); it was delicious.

I am seriously considering having this place cater my son's Bar Mitzvah and keeping it dairy only.

Oh, Arabella, that sounds wonderful--the food, the good friends, the "after-party" at your home. Your husband must have been so happy!
For your husband's next birthday, could we be your new friends? We are very easy to get along with, eat any and all foods, know how to use napkins and forks and all that fancy stuff, and, if asked, will sing "Happy Birthday".

May 21, 2011. BM Date. Can you believe it? I think I can get away with a non-kosher caterer if we have an entirely dairy meal. Or maybe we'll just use them to cater the Friday night dinner.

I will definitely check out that forum. I need help, and lots of it.

Marlin, you were invited in spirit! I'm not doing this again for a while, maybe in 10 years for his 50th...

PS Funny thing about the Arancini - DH loves them there (they have saffron in them), but my diehard Italian cook friends that were there gave them the "thumbs down". They loved everything else.
