Birthday Dinner!

It is my beloved husbands birthday today - and he requested a simple dinner with just family. It is so much fun to cook for him, he is always interested in trying new recipes, so we decided to give this one a go..... we did have a salad too, but it wasn't photo worthy. We'll see if I can remember a pic of the dessert LOL!

Caesar roasted swordfish with asparagus almondine and roasted potatoes. Oh, and that is a gruner veltliner in the background.

A very happy birthday to Alexa's Beloved from here in Michigan too.

The asparagus and swordfish look yummy. I couldn't tell you about the wine, somehow I'm sure I wouldn't like it, LOL.

Yachter, thanks for your comments on this table. Not Chrismasy but winter is what I was hoping for when I set it. I set it in such a hurry that I see I didn't turn my trees with the pretty side out on all of them. Magpie, I should of stated DDaughter so you would of known for sure. Either one, glad you liked it. Yes, Karen, Jane and Creek are all having trying times with DDads. OA, thanks and I may try a MG table but don't know if I have much to put on it. I fell in love with these trees and some others at Shopko this year and DD never fails me. She listens to close sometimes but is always thinking of my tables for me while shopping. My jaw really dropped when I seen these stems. May be a little to upper class for me.lol Luvs, this was an accident with the trees and stems but they do seem to go together. When I received them I was thinking about using DM's 3 wisemen and setting a table but didn't have time. Jeanne, 20 years is perfect. Your still young enough to enjoy all the sports and life with them. I always told our children that they needed to be able to support their family if they were alone so it takes alot of hard work to be able to do this. Your DGD will appreciate life more with having to work to achieve it. Both our children own businesses and it's paying off. DD and I are 24 years apart and her and her DD are 25. She had to finish college, get married, own a home before having children. Wish we were all so disciplined in life.lol Thanks for all the wonderful comments on this table. Thanks 1pinkmountain, jessyf, and Linda! LOL 1pinkmountain. Sounds like something my mother-in-laws would do. I know my FIL liked lentil soup because I had made that for him a few times. MIL, not so much. LOL Jessy & Linda, I got a thank-you call from FIL after our dinner. He said they really liked the meal especially the biscuits and "buns" aka orange chocolate chip muffins. The "other dish" aka spinach cranberry salad was not something they were familiar with but they "liked" it - being polite. :-) Well, I gave my best shot and they got what they wanted. Hubby came home, after delivering, and told me that his dad had a big grin on his face when he saw what I made for him. That's all it counts! Al

The Birthday Dinner. Fit for a 10 year old?

Broiled Arancini Italian Rice Balls (Arancini) These rice balls are great as an appetizer or a main meal with a nice salad and broccoli and garlic side dish. 1 lb white rice 4 eggs 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1 lb mozzarella cheese, cut in 16 cubes 1 1/2 cups Italian seasoned breadcrumbs olive oil Cook rice until sticky. Let cool. Mix rice, 4 egg yolks and grated cheese in large bowl. Form rice mixture into balls (the size of a large meatball)) enclosing cube of Mozzarella inside each rice ball. Beat egg whites. Dip each rice ball in beaten egg whites and then in bread crumbs. Drizzle with olive oil and broil on all sides until well browned. To serve, split open and top with tomato sauce. Makes 12 to 14.

Homemade ravioli is one of my favorites, but I don't make it often enough. I have not yet made crepes with strawberries and white chocolate sauce, but it is now on my to-do list!! Moe's birthday is the same day as my brother Mike's, but I must have told you this before. I remember telling you that your birthday is the day before my sister's. I feel like we are almost related! It was a happy coincidence that I had this wine on hand. I had gone wine shopping with a friend a few years ago and had gotten a bunch of mid-priced ($15 - $30 bottle) as a mixed case and set several of them aside. This was one of them.

Yesterday, when I knew what the menu was, I decided to google Swordfish and Wine Pairing. The first and most recommended wine was GV. I just happened to have this bottle languishing on the shelf in the 'cellar' and viola - a perfect match for the dinner! It just so happened that this is one of the 'powerful' GVs that held up beautifully to the strong caesar flavors and swordfish.

Sometimes it really is just luck! LOL!

The whole meal is making me cry, I don't cook much fish anymore since DS#2 doesn't tolerate any and DS#1 only likes salmon. Looks like a perfect birthday meal to me!

Off to check out that wine!

Looks good, Alexa! Are you going to put that on the "New Recipe" thread? The few times I've had swordfish I've not enjoyed it but I suspect that was do to the preparation and not the fish. I keep meaning to try it again, and "Ceasar" sounds good.
