well I have tried several times to grow cilantro and am not successful. I grow other herbs but am not about to get cilantro to survive and I love to cook with it!

Jamie, that likes to be barely covered with soil, and sprinkled a little. Then ignore it. I love the stuff too. I'll be planting this spring.

Tulips will rarely bloom again in warm weather. When I lived in So. California, I had to plant new tulips every year - however, daffodils, irises, fresias and many more will rebloom for quite a few years.

lots of northern things, i'm in 9B orlando in a very protected spot and have jamaican & cuban tropicals for zone 11B...i want hostas, foxgloves, sweet peas, english eating peas, delphinium, cimicifuga, campanulas, columbines, hollyhocks and many other unusual things i had to leave behind at my place in chicago. what does northern plants in here, is the lack of winter die-back and rest. you can get them to make it a yr but not thrive much longer. if that doesn't do it 6 months of 90 degree temps and humidity near 100 will lol.

BTW ron you should look into bulb varieties that Univ of FL has worked on to make them need few chill hours. our local botanical garden, leu gardens, has a bed of daffodils bred by UF. they have tulips for the gainesville area too.

from the CA dry warm areas i'd like to have olives, echiums and eucalyptus. it is much too humid for these things to make it here. but for the most part i am very happy w/ my tropicals and have learned to retrain my brain on growing veggies here. ~ liz

jaime, you should switch to culantro. it tastes and smells like cilantro but is very easy to grow. i can never get cilantro to grow well, it's great for a bit but then it gets fine leaves like dill and goes to seed (coriander) ~ liz

You have to keep cutting it back. Harvest if you will. Don't let it go to seed. If it does, strip the little seeds and re-sow them, for more plants.

Leslie, do you have it in full sun, partial sun or what?

I'd just like to grow the ones in my zone. Deer eat everything I plant. Anybody want some deer for their yard?

I have about 200 antique roses and those I dearly love. Some of the antique roses resemble a peony.

I too would love to have an avocado tree!

OH!!! And a cherry tree....that would be grand!

Hey, Debn, you can grow Avacados in your yard - just plant them on the south side of your house, up against the house, and they will do fine. I have two in my yard that overwintered and my neighbor, 2 blocks up, has a BUNCH that are about 8-10 feet tall and bear fruit.

yes indeed. of all things, i cannot keep lavender alive nor can i keep a butterfly bush, even though they grow like weeds for others in my area.

ron, have you considered growing the tulips in pots and then harvesting the bulbs at the end of the growing season so you would have them for the following year?

Cilantro took over my garden. I couldn't kill the stuff! And that was years ago, I am still getting plants.

I use to have an avocado tree then we had a 20 year frost and killed it. I gave up and just buy them at the fresh fruit stand.

I am in 9A and can grow quite a bit but not quite warm enough or cold enough for certain things. I wish I could grow more tropicals like Hawaiian guava, papayas and macadamia nuts. And New England blueberries.

I'm a super Hosta freak..would love to have the little area I call mine here full of what I used to grow.

I had 9 various varieties,and had 5 perennial beds,some over 45' long,overflowing with them at my own home

This place faces direct south,not good for sure for Hosta..altho,I have managed to get 3 in the farthest most eastern corner.

You can grow cilantro, but try planting in the fall for a winter crop. When it gets too warm, it will bolt.
Ron, I'm with you on the tulips, but I'd also love to be able to grow lettuce in the summer. Here it is a cool season crop.

I absolutely love hostas!! I had 24 varieties at one time (note the past tense) until we got Henry and he developed a liking for them as well - roots and all!! I used to order them from a nursery that specialized in hostas in the London, ON, area but it closed.

Ontgal, many of the variegated varieties and the yellowish and light greenish ones (August Moon, for example) do very well in the sun. Have you tried any of those? Only the blues and dark greens really need a fair amount of shade.

My garden is mostly in shade - some full day and the rest part of the day. I would love to have more sun so I could grow hybrid tea roses.

Debn, my neighbor (Kitty) buys the fruit at the store and plants the seeds - if you come and visit me, we will go up and see her trees. My grandsons planted the two I have, from fruits I got at Walmart.

I have GOT to try that. So...did you just put the seed into a pot and baby it or just dig a hole in the yard and plop it in?

I miss some things from my childhood home. I would love peonies and black raspberries. Forsythia would be nice too. Lovely, tall, aromatic lilac bushes with big flower heads.

Debn, from what I understand, she sprouts some of them in a glass of water and some she just sticks right in the sand.

I really, really miss Lilacs, Lily of the Valley, cherry trees and blue spruce. Can't grow any of those here in TX. :(

We do have fruit trees and flowering quince, but very few other things can tolerate the summer heat :^(

Fuschia- I miss those! Begonias don't do so well for me either. Sigh...

Isn't if funny how we seem to covet plants we can't easily grow? I love tropical plants but never thought of the southerners wanting our cole climate plants. I would surely miss tulips, lily of the valley, lilacs.....

But I really wish I had an easier time raising my beloved brugmansias!

I'd love lilacs and peonies. Miss the wonderful smell. My mother brought a bunch of tulip bulbs home from Holland and I planted them. The darned squirrels dug them all up and ate them!! Darned squirrels!!!

I would LOVE a lilac. Those are my favorite.
If we get this new house, I will plant hostas and hydrangea's. Not sure how I will do, but I'm going to try. I love them both. The California Central Valley sun is brutal and my current house bakes in it. I am very limited with what I can get to survive. I have some good ones, Salvia, Lavender, Roses, Yarrow, Jasmine, Nandina, Lily of the Nile, Naked Ladies (they are in a more protected area), to name a few. But, I love plants that like shade. Maybe it's the "greener side of the fence" thing. This new house has three big trees in the back yard that create great filtered light in the summer. I have all kinds of plans for that place.

DH has tried several dogwoods but never had any luck. We'd love to have a few.

I've tried bleeding hearts a few times with no luck,and i'd love to be able to grow them.I'd also love a dogwood tree,some pussy willows and forsythia bush.

I love lilacs, roses, daylillies, hostas,pink and white Lily of The Valley, but my very favorites are bleeding hearts-I have pink, red, and yellow. I'd like to grow more-including Dutchman's Breeches.

I love growing my nastursmuns (sp), sweet peas, lantana, daisys, rosemary herb (well almost any herb); I also used to grow Easter lily's. I used to plant the lily (that the kids gave me every year) in the ground and over the years they would muliply and become a small field of Easter lilys. The only problem is they come up in July in So.Calif....so people would stop and look (and of course smell the wonderful scent) because they were unusual and so beautiful.

I always wish I could grow lilacs, tulips, and peonies. And of course all those trees that we can grow out here...cherry, apple, etc.
