Uh-oh, Now I've Done it--please help with color!

I've always wanted a red leather sofa, but have always gone with practical taupe or beige cloth. Yesterday I bought one!!! We've recently purchased a second home (long distance marriage) and I figured, hey, it all has to be painted anyway...now's the time!

WHAT WAS I THINKING??? I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT COLOR TO PAINT THE LIVING ROOM! Worse, it's all open concept so whatever I use in the LR room has to match the DR, kitchen & Hall...and I hate beige!

Does anyone have a few suggestions for paint colors? I'm a decorating lightweight, definitely not up to this challenge!

P.S. I'm editing to mention I have 3 primitive orangey-caramel pine/oak antique accent pieces with me but no other furniture, upholstered pieces, rugs or drapes--so almost a blank canvas.

Thank you all for your comments, you've really got me thinking! And If you know of an online fabric store with great colors & patterns please let me know--I'm stuck 'cuz my new house is in a pretty remote part of northern Canada, no shopping nearby. They do sell BM paint, 'tho!

That's wonderful!

Lots of people like gray and red - I am not among them, because I think reds like that one really shine in a warm scheme ... so I'd choose a soft, vanilla-creamy ivory that leans toward palest gold.

Look at B. Moore's Greenmount Silk, Hepplewhite Ivory, Windham Cream, and Montgomery White.

That background will also give you lots of options for rug colors, from simple sisal to tribal patterns; and for cushions, in bold solids, traditional or graphic prints and patterns, or textured neutrals.

It also looks good with virtually every wood tone in floors and furniture; with brass, silver, and china finishes in lamps, accessories and frames; and also with touches of black.

I so agree with Bronwynsmom, you need a soft warm shade to showcase the couch. The above colors are great and you could also look at very pale gold. Beautiful couch by the way.

Sunnibel, I had incorrectly assumed you were where 90% of the people in the state live, in the DC/Baltimore corridor. I am in Baltimore. If you like doing outdoor activities there is a lot to do in western Maryland and its worth a 2-hour drive if you make it a whole day. Re: varieties, if you are not putting in many trees then my main advice is to make sure you are growing varieties that are suited to the mid-Atlantic. I have discarded at least 50 apple varieties which were not working out in spite of their great descriptions. Once you have narrowed down the choices you can post your list here to get feedback. I recently started writing down my overall favorites, here is the current list: Freyburg Gold Rush Kidds Orange Red Wickson Crab (but, cracks every other year) Nonpareil Rubinette Bonne Hotture Abbondanza Chestnut Crab Golden Russet (American) Hawaii Swayzie Newtown Pippin Pomme Gris Reine des Reinettes Ashmead's Kernel Mother Rusty Coat White Winter Pearmain Golden Nugget Akane (but is highly bug-prone) Maigold Ribston Pippin Myers Royal Limbertwig Pink Lady I am a big fan of russets and big-tasting apples so my favorites are skewed in that direction. Definitely NOT poison sumac. PS has compound leaves, as does ash, and your tree's leaves are growing individually from woody twigs. Poison sumac is a large shrub/short tree and is almost always growing in wet boggy areas. Most do not grow over 15 feet tall. Looks like wild black cherry to me, too. That grows into a large, tall tree. I think it is a very attractive tree throughout the year. As it gets larger the bark gets even flakier and adds interest to the winter landscape. It looks like you have some nearby wires you will need to consider as you plan for future growth.

Can't do anything about it now in any case. I don't know what forum you were reading. My recommendation for any one who might ask me is to prune when the forsythia is in bloom. Sometimes that is in March, sometimes that is in early April. No forsythia is in bloom here yet. Even though it was in the 60's here last weekend, no pruning here. We schedule the pruning of our community beds the first weekend in April, just to try to set a date. Each variety, each plant has its own needs. "Austins" is too generic. Some like a hard pruning, some don't. You'll find out over time what is best. If you didn't prune enough, you can go back and trim more off later. Don't obsess about it. Oh, and some just aren't good bloomers until they have matured, 3 - 4 years. Some just aren't good bloomers at all. Paul Z. has some videos posted, one is on pruning. Jasper looks handsome, as always! Vaccumfreak, did you find real fleas anywhere on/around him? I found tiny black spots under Nikita's chin once, and freaked out thinking it was flea residue. It was acne I guess, and disappeared once she was bathed and scrubbed carefully under the chin. Our vet gave us an antibiotic cream to put on a boil she got on her lower lip once (that probably was flared up acne too). I use a lil dab of it on her chin sometimes and that seems to keep the acne at bay. I guess I'm really lucky that Nikita and Simba love bathtime. I bathe them once a month and they seem to like hot water rahter than lukewarm. Max is OK as long as water doesn't touch his face. Simba loves to sit on my shoulder when I'm in the shower; I don't relish that one bit LOL he's just such a big baby.

Love the different tones in the leather! It will be rich and beautiful on a backdrop of soft warm tones, as suggested. Can't escape it is colorful, but some people consider red to be a neutral!

I also think the grey shown with the couch looks wonderful, esp the warmer tones in the rug. So that would be another option for your walls.
