Voice memo alternative

Since I rely so much upon my PDA & computer as an organizing tool (I'm trying to go as paperless as possible), I'm a big proponent of using voice memos when driving or when it's just easier than keying it into my PDA (IE in the sunlight, when my PDA is difficult to read.) I've used the voice memo function on my cell phone for this (but it doesn't hold much time) and I have a voice recorder that I also use. But one tool I've recently fallen in love with is Jott.com - you can use a phone to leave a voice memo for yourself & Jott will translate it to text. You can elect to receive email notifications, too. So when you return home, you can go to Jott.com, sign in & there will be your memo in the text version. The conversion to text is pretty good, but not flawless and in case it converted it incorrectly, you can also click a button & play the actual audio you recorded.

For me, this means, I'm no longer limited to the small amount of space my phone allows and I don't have to tote the audio recorded with me, either. I have the Jott number on speed dial & it only takes a few seconds. There are different levels of service, but I use the free one, which allows you unlimited voice-to-text notes (maximum of 15 seconds per note.)

I used Jott beta for almost a year, but haven't been using it since it went to a paying service. Maybe I'll start trying the free service again.

I used it mostly for reminders and memos to client files, but I also loved being able to send an email or text by cell phone.

Love your ideas Herblady! And your pictures are gorgeous. Zone 6 is a bit kinder to a gardener than zone 4 is. Lucky you! One other alternative is to place 10 ft. landscape timbers or wooden posts 2 ft. into the ground so that 8 ft. remains above ground. They should be placed 56 inches apart. Then purchase cattle panels which measure 60 inches high and 16 ft. long. Cut the panels in half across the 60 inch side. Then using U shaped fencing staples place an 8 ft. x 60 inch panel between the posts. You could make it as fancy or as plain as you wish by adding a border on one or both sides and grow you climbers up the trellis'. MeMo

Decreased staff and budget pressure will make it difficult for the FCC to show much interest in a problem like this. Their resources are pretty much reserved for interference to public safety and aviation radio systems. The radio operator is NOT required to insure that you don't experience interference. He is only required to insure that his station is operating within the FCC rules. The FCC requires a label to this effect to be attached to each receiver "2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation." Your best bet to resolve this issue it so find a local ham radio operator who is knowledgeable in this area and who would be willing to provide help and advice. Many of these interference problems can be easily resolved. The best way to locate a ham to help would be through a local ham radio club. Aprile Clermont I just found this on backyardchickens "My husband has allergies to. The easiest way to test is to beat up an egg and put a drop onto your fore arm. Wait 5 minutes and check for itching, redness or blisters. Nothing there proceed to the next step. Another drop on another location of the fore arm, but this time take a needle and slightly scratch the surface of your skin. You don't want to bleed, but you want to get under the epidermis. Wait 5 minutes and check again. No symptoms at all do a small taste test by cooking the egg and take only a small bite and wait for at least 30 minutes. You can take an antihistamine prior if you worry, because it may reduce the symptoms, yet it may prevent any symptoms. If you don't get the symptoms you get from chicken eggs then most likely you are fine. Take the duck egg to your allergy specialist, if you are not comfortable testing yourself in the house. They can do the skin test under supervision and they do have medications on hand if you react badly. In general you should be fine doing the skin test, if you proceed as I have described above. " So you may be able to take the egg to your allergist if they don't have that in their regular testing kit. The duck eggs will cost you more because it does cost more to produce a duck egg than a chicken egg, but they are far heavier. Mine lay eggs that are about 30g heavier than a jumbo grade chicken egg.

I would say that our Chairperson has good control. She has no trouble at all reining in the meeting if necessary. She get's the stuff said, keeps order and we still have time to toss around various ideas. But everyone seems considerate of other people talking. I love my AV meeting!!!! Roberts Rules are also known as "consideration" in my book. I said MY book, lol, because I don't want anyone to think I am demeaning Robert or his formal rules. I like to hear every person's voice but only one at a time. Lucille, I understand what you mean about hearing. While I do have superb hearing,,,,,I want to have only one person talking so they can explain their view or method and then move on to the next person in an orderly fashion. Noise (no matter what the source ex: too many talking at one time) gets too loud cause everyone wants to be heard and then my ears actually hurt from the loudness! Needless to say, I hate places that are loud. (restaurants, sports bars, loud music or TV) My husband is somewhat hard of hearing and we fight about the volume on the TV! lol Joanne, I agree with you,,,,everyone should be on time. We have a couple people that come from a farther distance than I do, but they come from work. And the library sets our time so we can't accommodate them to start later. But I must say, they are respectful and quiet when they come in. It is not a constant "restart to catch several late people up" by any means. I belong to a great group of people and a great AV Club. Our family plan includes "unlimited" text messaging. If I am thumbing through a magazine while DS is at his piano lesson, and I see a product or an ad for an upcoming TV show, etc. - or if I am waiting for DD to come out of school and a thought pops into my mind -- or if I am shopping and want to write something down to look up at home -- I simply send a text message to my email address. Then when I am at the computer and read my email, I jot down these text messages/reminders.

I was recently volunteering at school with some other women, and this came up (sort of) and I was surprised that many people are not aware that you can send a text message to your email address (or anyone else's for that matter).

I haven't looked at Jott recently - but will check it out again - thanks!

We don't have a cell phone, but Jott sure sounds handy!

I keep a pen and some paper in my purse, along with the PDA that I don't use very often. Or else I write on the errand list I already have with me. I transfer the info to the proper place when I get home. For example, I might be listening to the radio, and want to visit a URL that was mentioned. So I jot it down, and put the note on my computer desk later.

Many times, hubby comes home and tells me he didn't do something while at work because he forgot. (It's usually something like a quick personal phone call while another office is still open, or to remember to bring something home from the office, etc.) So I grab the phone and leave a message for him on voice mail, while he's standing right next to me. Otherwise, he'd just keep forgetting. And then I'd hear him complain again when he gets home. Someday, he might actually call himself to leave a reminder, but so far, I have to be the one who thinks to do it.

I think it is all a matter of making new habits, and having a strategy to retain important information, so that it won't get lost in the shuffle of urgent-but-not-important everyday life.
