Cameras, etc. where do you store them?

I've been to several peoples' houses lately and, I swear, I NEVER see clutter! Where do you guys store things like cameras, video cameras, battery packs, etc.? I have all of our's on a corner shelf in our bedroom and they just look junky! We really don't have a lot of unused closet/drawer space in which to put them. Do I need to bite the bullet and MAKE room out of sight for them?

Great question. I put the small digital and the 35 mm in a corner of a cupboard in the kitchen. Always available with the kids, kwim?

The video camera with case, battery packs and cords are in the entertainment center.

However, I've never had a home that hasn't had clutter. I wouldn't know what that feels like! LOL Neighbor next door is like that. My daughter went inside and said "your house is SO CLEAN".

I have a mahogany dresser which has always been in the living areas of the house. It's 44 wide and only 32 high, so it also makes a great buffet when needed. Good for setting up holiday decorations, etc.

The drawers are shallow, so it was lousy for clothing. Perfect for everyday stuff. One drawer has envelopes, stamps, tape, etc. Gift wrapping supplies in one. I keep one hammer, screwdriver and some small nails, as well as replacement light bulbs in another drawer. Bottom drawer has cameras and extra film. Extra batteries.

We don't use the video camera much, so it is on the top shelf in the entry closet.

I store mine at room temperature in any kind of packet after drying. Canna have a very thick seed coat. Don't forget to nick and soak before planting. The thickness of teh seedcoat has allowed canna to germinate successfully after being found 100's of years later! They were even rumored to germinate after being found in Eygptian tombs! That claim is false according to the web, but they have been able to germinate from very old seed. You'll do fine. Karen

I'll second what Pesky wrote -- don't store your onions and potatoes near one another since the gasses they give off as they ripen happen to make the other one ripen faster. Have you ever tried the green plastic vegetable-storage bags? They're usually around $4-5 for a box and each bag can be used over and over (up to 20 times according to the box, but who knows). I was skeptical but now I'm constantly giving them away to friends who visit our house. They are fabulous. You store the fruit or veg inside and the plastic absorbs or neutralizes the gasses, so the items stay much fresher much longer. I'll buy a big bunch of bananas and put half in the bag and leave half out, so they ripen at different rates. Fabulous. Broccoli, green peppers, berries that normally ripen so fast you can hardly get to them, they all ripen much more slowly in the bags. I've never tried the Ziploc brand, only the kind that are sold in a flat box at Walmart or Menards.

I used to be a Heinz ketchup snob but no more. One of our tastes have changed, whether it's Heinz or mine. I'll buy generic before Heinz now unless Heinz is much cheaper. And I don't use much ketchup anymore anyway so it doesn't make a difference. I tend to use BBQ sauce or steak sauce where I used to use ketchup and I have never been one to bury things in ketchup anyway. I mentioned to a few people I know that I didn't like Heinz anymore and they said basically they found the same thing. And then I saw America's Test Kitchen did a couple taste tests and the perennial victor, Heinz, lost the last couple times to Hunt's. Guess I'm not the only one who doesn't like it anymore. It's also interesting that Hunt's is cashing in on the corn syrup paranoia. I've been meaning to see what sales impact if any they can attribute to that aspect. For most other things I always look at store brand/generic first, then compare to name brand. There's one where I find real superiority and that's Green Giant canned vegetables. But the price is *so* much higher usually that it's not worth it to me. Occasionally though they'll go on sale if I happen to catch it. But I don't buy as much canned veg anymore either. Using more fresh and frozen. Although I still prefer canned corn to frozen. Most household cleaners however I seldom find store brand to be adequate. There I look for clearance, coupons and sales and that's quite often. Dish soap is Dawn or Joy only. I don't waste my time with anything else unless I use it for hand soap. I've bought the store brand "Magic Erasers" and they seem OK. Generic laundry detergents seldom do the job on real dirty stuff unless I doctor it up and that increases the cost so I might as well just use Tide Free. Bleach is bleach, baking soda is baking soda and all aspirin are alike to me. Speaking of aspirin, I found it interesting that the Target I was in this week only carries Bayer aspirin. No store brand anymore. And 100 count bottle was over $9! No way. I stopped at a Walgreens a day or two later and 100 count bottles were $1 each. Now for a quick rant: Since when did people become so stupid they'll pay $7 for 50 count of "low dose" aspirin? A female friend of mine is on that and I said why don't you just bite a regular aspirin in half and toss the remainder? Net cost of a penny per dose rather than 12¢-14¢ per dose. And since it's daily, it'll start to add up. $45-$50/yr savings there and if she cut them in half and used both halves you double the savings. End of rant. I am shopping Aldi more and more so there you get mostly store brands. For the most part they're just fine and usually much cheaper (but know your prices - they're not always cheaper). Paper products vary. Lately I've done well getting paper towels on clearance and put a $1 off coupon on it and have better product cheaper. I buy paper plates at Aldi. They're fine. Toilet paper? I used to be a Charmin snob but then for a while it was so dusty I quit, especially when the price went up. Now I usually buy the 1000 sheet rolls, usually Scott because they're so much cheaper than anything else and I'm pleased with the product. I buy them at about 25¢ - 50¢ per roll. That equates to about 5-7 rolls of any other brand. Won't find it any cheaper and it all goes down the toilet anyway. I haven't found store brand deodorants to work as well as name brand and with clearance and coupons I usually buy good brand names for under $1. I like foaming hand soap and the store brand is fine but there too I watch for clearance and it can be cheaper. With any of them you have to try them and see what you like or don't like. But you also have to be a savvy shopper because they're not always cheaper. Know your prices and compare sizes too. Size of items is ever-changing.

NOTE... we are not neat freaks... this just happens to be one thing I have under semi-control. I created a *charging station* in the font are of a secretary that I have in the front entry are of our home. I cut a hole in the back and snaked a cord from a surge protected power strip to the plug. OH... first I took a large straight sided basket that i had and also cut a small hole and suck the cord out of it.. so the power strip is in the basket... so then I hooked up the various chargers to the strip and that is where we all put our cell phones and the digital camera when we come in for the day. That way it's all tucked out of site.. but near and charging when we need it.

I currently have nine cameras, numerous cases, two flash units, and various and sundry accessories. Only some of it is clutter; I tend to sell off the cameras I no longer use often. Strangely, I do not own a video camera. If I did, however, it would all be together -- which it is -- on a shelf or two of the "office" closet (which is "landscaped" with that white wire stuff).

Plese get those things put away so that if your home is broken into, your electronics aren't sitting there asking to be taken.

We keep ours in a cabinet, but until we renovated our kitchen/utility/family room, we just kept our cameras, video recorders, etc on a shelf in a closet. And that's all I have to say on the matter. Good luck!

Mine has a spot in the cabinet but is currently sitting out so I remember to take it with me every Thursday to DS's football games.

I'm thinking that in case of a break-in, the thieves will never notice it in plain sight with the other clutter, LOL.

Steve O- A man after my heart. I love my cameras.
I have my digital camera in my book writing bag. Yup. Playing at writing a book and taking pictures for it for future references etc. It travels with me or sits on the washing machine (my outgoing pile). It is easily available for kid pics etc.

My other cameras are in a camera bag- one camera and several lenses in each bag with appropriate film etc.

Our camcorder is in the closet and generally pulled out for special events that we might want to record. I sometimes pull it out for a day in the life of... and record our normal day. Whatever-

The point is- they are up and out of the way and yet easily available.

Yikes - where IS my camcorder??? Not sure, but it is all in this very nice case...it is one of those huge things that you rest on your shoulder!!!! I don't use it anymore, so it should be jettisoned.

Digital - instantly handy - almost as handy as car keys.

I like the charging station explained here - I need to configure something like that..

THEN - I need to get all binoculars and such in some area of certainty.

I have an e-basket on an upper shelf in my coat closet. The basket contains everything electronic including cameras, flashlights, iPod gear, cell phone gear, "unused" remote controls, adapters of all sorts, extension cords, headsets for airline travel, etc.

You name it, if you plug it in, or if it requires batteries/charging it goes in this basket.

I have them in my bottom nighttable drawer. They've been there for years and it's one of the few things I can find immediately. The camcorder, though, is in my curio cabinet.

Charging station. What a good idea! Why didn't I think of that when we redid this house? Things plugged in all over the place. Cell phones still get charged on the top of the mircrowave. I'm afraid to move it to anywhere less visable or I'll never remember to grab it in the mornings.
