Remember that cooking show Two Fat Ladies?

I loved that show! They were so inventive and creative, even though they cooked food I don't eat. lol.

I also loved The Galloping Gourmet.

Weird because I didn't cook when I watched those shows. But I think I always wanted to. I was scared. Now my fave cooking show is Secrets of a Restaurant Chef. I watch a ton of them every weekend, but she is the only one that I enjoy listening to and learn from. I guess I keep hoping.

I hate the Neely's and Rachel Ray - both drive me out of my mind. Oh, there is a guy on PBS I think, Barbecue University maybe, that I like too.

There were some other earlier shows that are more entertaining than what is on now. My two favorites were Floyd on Food (from England) and Cookin' Cheap from Roanoke, Virginia. Both shows made horrible recipes, and Floyd would travel around England learning to make and discard local dishes. Larry Bly and Laban Johnson on Cookin' Cheap would collect white trash Southern recipes, most of which consisted of opening up series of cans, throwing the contents into a pot, and them cook it "till the cows came home." Then they would get in little old lady drag to sample and critique the recipes. It was pretty hysterical, and reminded me a bit of Greater Tuna, a play I saw in Austin.

I did like the Two Fat Ladies, and I did make one of their sandwich recipes, although I can't remember anything else that I wanted to make. Some of the recipes had off-putting names, like "bubble and squeak", which did not sound appetizing to me at all. I found it interesting when they would shoot their food before cooking it - something I would never consider doing myself.

Before the fat lady sings--in the final act. I guess origins of the phrase are uncertain; some think it refers to a Wagner opera. Debra, the rebloom scape on Boundless Beauty is coming smack in the middle. Ambulance Chaser will have to be a lot more vigorous before I get excited about it, but some are slow to establish. Labyrinth is not in the garden; not sure how well the bloom holds in sun or how blooms are presented on a garden plant. Morning Mood is a wonderful plant--a good grower and standout color.

Frances, For all my roses I spray Ortho Rose Pride once every 10 days. Everyone usually tells me spray once a week but that's just too often for my busy schedule so I figure 3 times a month is fine. I buy the 16 oz concentrate liquid form from Home Depot for $13.97 and it lasts forever! I mix 1 TBSP of the liquid concentrate with 1 gallon of water and 1 TSP of Spreader Sticker to make sure the stuff sticks to the leaves. I always spray super early in the morning like around 6 am or early in the cool evening around 6 pm because you don't want the hot sun to burn the solution onto the leaves. Using a hand-held spray bottle I spray a nice heavy mist onto the top of all the leaves and a light spray beneath the leaves as well. On average it takes me about 30 to 40 minutes to spray all 69 rose bushes in my back and front garden. For you and your 6 roses you should be done in 5 minutes. Easy peasy :) Now if you want to be an extremist and go the extra route for show quality roses then you can also grab a systemic formula like Bayer Advanced All-In-One. It comes in liquid form and slow-release granular form. If you're interested I wrote a thorough review of the liquid product on Lowe's website that you can read here. This stuff is absolutely amazing for older (18+ month) roses but not to b eused on younger roses. DO NOT whatsoever use that stuff on newly planted roses or container roses. This stuff will severely burn or kill them. I made the mistake of using this stuff on all my roses and ended up murdering 3 of my newer roses which I feel horrible for :( Also I recommend cutting the dosage in half for your first application, then 75% on your 2nd, and 100% thereafter. If you want to go the organic route I've read that insecticide soap is pretty good but I have no experience with it yet. So far my biggest headache with growing roses in Florida are thrips. OMG I hate them !!! If you find that your roses have rusty brown edges those are thrips munching away on the petals, NOM NOM NOM - I tried using Bayer's $5 insect control for the thrips but it's a joke because I go through one bottle so fast. The systemic release formula seemed to be the only thing that worked for me. I would love to hear from others though if anyone else has advice on thrips! Last but not least during the hot summer months I water all my roses twice a day. Once in the morning when I wake up and let the dogs out around 8 am and again in the evening when I get home from work around 6. From late fall until February I then back down to 2 times a week. I can go on and on about my feeding and fertilizing as well but you specifically asked about black spot and rose disease so I figured I'd answer that question directly first. My apologies for the long-winded response. Hopefully some of that info was helpful :) OH! I almost forgot, Most of my advice I got from Mr. Nelson, the owner of Nelsons Florida Roses and my friend Jim who tends to the roses at Leu Gardens. If you can't find Rose Pride at your local nursery or a box store, Nelsons Florida Roses recommends these products for fungicide: - Ortho Rose Pride ( Triforine ) - Ortho Orethenex - Valent Triforine - Copper and Maneb Combination Sprays - Fertilome Lawn and Garden Fungicide - Fertilome HALT Fungicide For monthly Thrips control they recommend: - Spinosad or Conserve - Orthene - Cygon - Bayer Advanced Rose and Flower Insect Killer For Spider Mite Control ( Upon appearance ) - Organocide

I think there's a big difference between a "cooking" show and a food entertainment show. The problem is, the networks don't seem to think we need both of them, and the entertainment shows are edging out everything else. I love the names Sandra Lee's food creations have been called, including "edible hate crime." Nigella Lawson is really magnetic, and I love her "Feasts" cookbook. I also agree about Jamie Oliver's passion for food; I loved that series where he toured around Italy. I used to love ATK but Chris Kimball just started to annoy me too much. The formula is always, look what an apocalyptic disaster every apple pie/beef stroganoff/ham sandwich you've ever eaten is! Dry! Soggy! Heavy! Tasteless! Overcooked! Raw! Radioactive! Asbestos-laden! Yeah, if every classic were always so wretched before Cooks Illustrated came along, why would we want to learn how to make them? I also agree that the recipes are generally too complicated for what you get, but I have not had the same fantastic results. Just not worth it to me.

Microwaves are for Cooking, with Donovan Jon Fandre. That show was on at the time microwaves were becoming popular and he had a good show to encourage people to be less afraid of microwaves. He'd deliberately leave a metal mixing spoon in the bowl to prove that metal in a microwave is not such a big deal. I enjoyed the show and learned a few tricks. Favorite show was Justin Wilson. Not so much that I'd do his recipes, but he showed that cooking is cooking, and don't get hung up on recipes. A little too much of this, too little of that isn't the crisis that some believe. Nathalie Dupree was a favorite. Her thing seemed to be to tip the bowl of whipped cream over her head to prove it was thick enough. I watched Galloping Gourmet but never was too thrilled about him or his show. It got old that he couldn't go 5 minutes without some comment about Treena. Liked the Frugal Pervert, er, Gourmet because of the history he'd bring up during the shows. Again, showing that measurements are less critical than many think. There was show, I think it was called Lavonne's Kitchen? Thin, younger black woman who demonstrated a lot of home cooking/family recipes. Haven't seen that for years. Also Franco Palumbo's show was interesting and informative. 2 Fat Ladies was a riot, though few of their recipes would I ever try. Can't stand the 4timeFelon and the Belle of the Bigots so I avoid them like the proverbial plague. I do like Cook's Country/ATK and Kevin Belton's show. ] I had recorded virtually every Cooking Cajun and Outdoor Cooking with Inside Help show and made the mistake of loaning the tapes to a friend. Tapes have never been seen since. :( And the shows aren't broadcast around here anymore. I did get a lot of his recipes downloaded right before and right after he died. He used to post them but after he died they pulled them off the site and won't give them out anymore. But he got me using and appreciating Louisiana Hot Sauce, and a pinch of cayenne. And after putting black pepper and parmesan on garlic bread, it's the only way I make it anymore, though I add Italian seasoning too.

I use to love that show to funny when they were on the motorcycle tooling around. Sad the one died of cancer. Years ago I use to love a show called "Pasquale". Recently Im am addicted to "Sam the Cooking Guy" he is such a cool guy!

I loved watching the 2 Fat Ladies. I also used to like to watch "The Galloping Gourmet" and "Yan Can Cook" way back in the 80's, when I couldn't even boil water. :o)

Me too. I use to watch it everyday at 10. I swear I saw the same episodes over and over - my husband, then boyfriend, would go nuts. "We've already seen this one." he would complain but for some reason I couldn't tear away or ever switch the channel and good thing he knew better to complain too much. I saw these episodes in the late 90's. I couldn't tell when they were made as their style was more classic. Funny, as much as I enjoyed the show I would never ever make their recipes.

I use to watch it a lot also. Never made anything but I did think the show was pretty funny.
When the one passed away my husband said the other should just carry on and rename the show One Fat Broad.

Moe and I actually met Clarissa Dickson Wright in Scotland. We were in Edinburgh having a late breakfast in Valvona & Crolla and Clarissa was having a business meeting a few tables over. When her meeting finished she got up and came over to our table and chatted with us for a while. She was exactly like you would expect her to be. Just the way she appears on TV.

I have the complete set of The Fat Ladies on video and the two companion cookbooks.

I don't know if I really cook now but I'm certainly more aware of cooking and trying to cook sometimes:)

But I do remember that show and loved it for the sheer non-mainstream characters. What?!? Women who were fat and a not at all mainstream with their own show? Someone I can relate too! Having a ball nd laughing? Cooking on some strange stove and riding a motorcycle car? I have no idea about their recipes but I loved the show.
I can't think of any I really hate. Some grate on me, like the short haired woman who does healthy recipes, the healthy part is ok, she sort of grates (married to an airline pilot, don't know here name). Giada De Laurentiis sort of grates, when she (rather constantly) goes on about how something is all yummy. I have never wanted to try one of her recipes (which is odd because I'm not a purist) but I enjoy watching the woman on Semi-home made because she is soooooo 1950s and always includes a cocktail recipe!
