What are the current carpet trends? SO out of the loop!

I have started to look for my staircase that is in a two story foyer and upstairs hallway and then four bedrooms on my 9 year old home. I was sory of looking at maybe a small tone one tone diamond pattern for the hall and staircase. Not berber per say..or maybe it is called that...I don't know.... but a thicker heavy padded print. I know nothing about carpeting so I probably sound ignorant. I am so sorry. Then for the bedrooms maybe a nice frize? Is this already out of style? I was just sort of looking around at some stores before getting in too deep with anyone and thought I would ask some of you here because you keep up with the trends and have a good eye. I just feel so overwhelmed when I go in and there are so many and does anyone have any recent pics of what they have done? Amy I supposed to have ti all be the same? Heck I don't know! help me! Please! Thanks so much and sorry I sound so lost! I know I am in the right place for help!

Carpeting should go with the style of the house. Is your place Victorian? Modern? Colonial? Contemporary? This will affect your decision.

If you are concerned about being 'trendy' you may want to consider going with natural wood floors (if you already have them) and using area rugs. That seems to be the most popular option.

IMHO you can't go wrong with frieze. I would avoid patterned carpeting especially in a smaller home. You will have more waste with a patterned carpet.

Is this going to be "forever" carpeting? Then go with a neutral or very muted color in the best quality you can afford. Some people change out the carpeting every few years or whenever they change the furniture, and in that case you don't really need top of the line wool with super padding and can go with a wild or uber trendy color.

We have a colonial style home. It is around 3,000 SF. We have a lot of travertine on the main floor (nearly all of the mainfloor with the exception of the greatroom and in all the bathrooms and the floyer is hardwood leading to the staircase (which myhusband wants to rip out and make travertine as well because it is fading from the large window that allows a lot of sun in)

Forever carpet....hmmm....how about a long time carpet? 10-15 yrs or so? ;)

Our style is really a mix of pottery bar/Restoration hardware look. I have a lot of Arhaus furniture, some henredon furniture. A lor of neutral pieces that I can swap out throw pillows and have the room a different color with a can of paint and new drapes and pillows.

When I say "print" I sort of mean that "tone on tone" small pattern as to where you don't quite notice it, but it's there? Link below...

the longer the roots get the more trouble you'll have not damaging them during the transplant process. good luck and check out my post called, how I propagate my fig trees & more. it will help you later down the road and works for both dormant and softwood cuttings.

I'm *not* a floral chintz person, but I love your room! The floral is very fresh and pretty, not at all stuffy or dated. Your condo is really lovely. I'm not usually a fan of slipcovers. If they're not really well fitted they can look rumpled. OTOH, it can be a nice change of pace for the warm seasons. I found it interesting reading your comments about current trends. Like with all trends, there are things I like and things I don't. I do like the emphasis on natural elements. They're soothing and warm and can even be cheap! Like my little stack of flat river stones currently on the mantel, picked up at the beach. Other trendy things I just don't like. Those stainless or aluminum chairs and barstools just look to me like they belong in police station or jail. Neutral colors are great, but I also love color. I wish I could afford a Susan Sargent rug, for instance. You seem to have great taste and style, so trust your instinct. If you continue to feel the upholstery isn't what you want, then go ahead and slipcover. But maybe give it a couple months more to let everything grow on you.

"In" is whatever you see in magazines, period. "Out" is whatever was in magazines a generation ago. Everything else is in between. Some people enjoy being "in". Whether it is the show off factor or flighty tastes or just enjoying the vicissitudes of fashion, they want to be in. That's fine, it comes with a price tag. The price tag depends on how genuinely "in" you want to be or if you are happy to fake it. Trying to be classic is extraordinarily difficult. The entire building and decorating industry is working full time trying to make every little facet of your home look "out". They carefully edit the colors and styles of what is available to buy, so that in subtle ways you are stamping everything you do with a date, whether you chose to or not. Your best hope is to buy things that are not made by US corporations. Buy abroad, by handmade, by antique. That can help keep you from being "out", but it won't make you in, either. If its trendy and inexpensive, i go with the flow and don't worry about it. If its trendy and costly, I try to buy things that I really like. But sometimes it is hard to tell if something really speaks to you or if you are still responding to a trend!

Those are all beautiful rooms, Holly. I think part of the problem with both beige and gray as trendy colors is how they are used. When you see a gray room without any contrast, color or texture, it's too much. The same goes for relentlessly beige and tan rooms I have seen, filled with brown leather sofas and not an once of color to relive the tedium. People who are not as attuned to interiors as say designers or decorating amateurs see a Joanna Gains gray interior, but they miss all the other parts that make the room work. The color is easy to pick out for everyone, the details, which make the design work blend into the background for those who dod not look at interiors a lot, or critically.
