ground cherry pie recipe ??

I have ground cherries growing wild every year in the garden & I do pick the ripe husked fruits off the ground (ache!!)& husk them but would like a recipe for a pie! My Iowa grandmother would make the good groundcherry pie (some find the taste of the berries bland, 'insipid'!! but I like them!)I would like to make it but I don;t have her recipe. The ones I find have too many things added to the berries & it overwhelms the subtle berry taste. Any groundcherry pie makers out there?!

It's a horrendously awful yellow fruit that grows inside a husk on an indestructible weed. I don't know how to describe the flavor except that it tastes like a tomato, except cloyingly sweet. It's truly disgusting.

If you google ground cherry pie, tons of recipes come up.

Recipe for Clear Jel?? Its just used as a thckener in high acid canning and has safer properties compared to flour or regular corn starch. 2 1/4 cups of Clear Jel, thats a LOT!! It may cook as thick as gummy bears with that amount of liquid.. I usually add it as the last item mixed in a slurry with water. Its stirred in while the rest of the ingredients are boiling, look for a thickness after a minute of boiling, add more if necessary. Instead of a lemon taste and acid, I would make it with an acid blend of tarteric, malic, and citric. These primary acids are what is used in many fruit based wines, and also work very well in bland tasting jellies and jams.

Sweet cherries are lightly less acidic than sour cherries, but not enough to impact safety issues (sour cherries are 3.2 - 3.8 usually; sweet cherries might be as high as 4.2 depending on the variety). Still well below 4.6 needed for BWB canning. Honey is also more acidic than sugar (3.9 as opposed to sugar's 6.00). The original recipe called for 7 cups of sugar, so they did reduce the proportion of honey (it's usually 3/4 to 7/8 cup of honey instead of 1 cup of sugar), but 6 cups sounds like way too much, as Dave said. You might not need that much Clear Jel either - it's a powerful thickener and most of us that have used it reduced the amount considerably. What you might consider is canning the cherries in a light syrup and thickening it for filling when you are ready to make the pie. Plain cherries would be much more versatile (my opinion). A light syrup would be 2-1/4 cups of sugar in 9 cups of water (for 7 quarts). I'd start with 1 cup of honey, add the cherries, and taste before you finish canning them. You can always add more honey to taste. Honey will make the syrup darker (but with cherries that shouldn't matter). I've done peaches in all-honey light syrup and they were delicious. The sweetener (sugar, honey, corn syrup, etc.) is really only for flavor and also helps retain color. You can can fruit in plain water, so there are no safety issues reducing the sweetener. Note: Substituting honey for sugar in jam and jelly recipes is more difficult, but for canning fruits in syrup, it works fine.

I have a simple recipe that was my DH's Grandma's. It's a hit and everyone I have shared it with has adopted it for their own Thanksgiving tradition. -2 cans sour (or tart) cherries, drained. Very important - do not use sweet cherries or cherries in syrup. -3/4 to 1 cup sugar -1/4 cup flour -1 tsp. almond extract -few drops of red food coloring Fold all ingredients together and put in pie crust. If you like, but not necessary, dot the top with a couple tablespoons of butter before putting on the top crust. Bake at 375 for 1 hour. Watch the crust for burning and use foil if necessary. My only crust tip is to brush the top with milk and liberally sprinkle sugar. Makes the crust look beautiful and crunchy!

I just googled and found this recipe which is cherry pie filling only. It is the same recipe but left the pineapple out and added a second can of cherries. I was going to suggest that but didn't know if the "juiciness" of the pineapple was needed. LOL I guess not. At any rate, I hope this helps. Cherry Dump Cake 1 box white or yellow cake mix 1/4 pound butter or margarine -- at room 1/2 cup nuts* -- chopped 2 cans prepared cherry pie -- filling walnuts or pecans are best for this recipe In a mixer blend the cake mix with the butter until it is fine and crumbly. Take out and save about 1 cup of the mixture. The remainder is pressed into the bottom of a 9x14" baking pan. Bake at 350* for about 15 minutes, or until lightly brown. Pour the cherry pie filling over the hot baked crust. Mix the chopped nuts to the remaining cake mix mixture, and sprinkle over the pie filling. Return to the oven for about 30-40 minutes, or until the mix mixture is lightly browned. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Tell us how you really feel Jessica. L)L!!!

I've never made a pie out of ground cherries, but I certainly wouldn't describe the flavour as "disgusting". I pick them up at the farmers market occasionally and just eat them like grapes. I actually like the taste.

I can't believe this topic is on here! I haven't been around much and was going to ask people about ground cherries and here it is. Sadly, I don't have a pie recipe. Ground cherries remind me of my Grandmother and time spent with her. My Dad used to call them (the Great) "Depression food". I LOVE them. Years ago I had relatives hunt them down in the area where they live and send seeds to me, because nobody knew what they were here. A couple years ago I found some at a nursery marked "husked tomatoes".

For those who want to renew 'fond childhood memories with grandma' like myself! : I found the seed for ground cherries in this year's 'Totally Tomatoes' seed catalog page 27 listed as: 'husk tomato' (Physalis peruviana) 30 seeds/$2.35 This is the plant I was referring to when I first posted my question. It took a couple of season for me to really get them to spread but now they come up all over the garden among the other plants. In fact... think I will go out & get down on my knees & gather some more & try some of these recipes that were sent! :)

We call those Cape Gooseberries. If you Google "Cape Gooseberry Pie" there are lots of recipes that don't have a lot of add-ins.

yes, I had heard them called cape gooseberries also! Though I never could see how ground cherries could be called a 'gooseberry'? Had gooseberries on the farm also (grew on canes/bushes)as well as another favorite: elderberries! Elderberry pie .... Mmmm .. more memories!
