Desperately need neutral to go with blues and greens
Comments (18)Just wanted to update-- I am liking the Quietude more and more. I thought maybe it was too gray and I should have gone with Wythe Blue, which is a bit more saturated. Then I changed out my lightbulbs to Sylvania Halogena and now the gray is much less and the blue-green is coming out much more. Since I have been getting home from work late every night this week, I still haven't finished getting the room back into shape (rehanging drapes, pics, etc.). I bet it will look even better when I do that this weekend. I'll also get to see how it looks with the sunlight coming through the windows during the day. I need to find some new artwork to hang in the room. I originally thought I wanted to go with subdued art in mostly white, but now I'm thinking I like the idea of bringing in some bright reds and oranges to complement the blue. In a magazine (maybe Domino) about a year ago, they showed Miles Redd's apt. He had a large piece of art that was a white canvas with an orange-y red "splatter" that was created from that little machine called a Spirograph I believe that little kids use to make art. It was really cool looking and would be perfect for my room. Wish I knew where to get something like that. For any of you that watched the Bravo show "Top Design", you might remember the winner, Nathan, created a beautiful piece of art by simply allowing different colors of paint to drip over the side of a canvas. I have always wanted to try this and with my millions of paint samples I could really do something cool. Maybe different hues of blues and greens with a little black in the background and one big bright orange, red or yellow stripe. I also would love to get one of those lamps that have what I call that candy red or orange glossy finish in the "genie bottle" shape with a simple drum shade. I am getting excited! As of now, my Kandinsky print (the color study of the different concentric circles) in a thick black frame is looking great against the walls. I have also noticed that placing a true blue color against the walls makes them appear to be more strongly aqua as the green undertones are accentuated. I love that! I am so happy that I made a good color choice and I have now made it to the "fun" stage of decorating the room. SO GLAD I STUCK TO MY GUNS AND DIDN'T SETTLE FOR A NEUTRAL! Comments (3)Hi Atlanta-John! Greetings from Fargo, ND!! I agree...use Satin on the main body!!! Flats tend to hold dirt more...simple as that. Some may grumble that "no one uses Satin...blah-blah...", BUT they don't have to clean YOUR house! I could give a rat's A$$ if Flat is "more appropriate" to some painters, etc. A sheened paint, like an Exterior Eggshell or Satin, will stay cleaner, and wash-up nicer. I would use exactly your sheen-choices in a heartbeat. FADING: ALL artificially created colorants; like Yellows, Greens, Magentas, & Blues; WILL fade. The question is...how fast? * It's mainly a question of paint/colorant quality. * You shouldn't have any problems with Duration IF...they actually use that paint-line. * The substrate HAS to be dry before priming. * I'd use a GRAY primer under TWO coats of the Duration Green Satin. * Paint shouldn't be applied in temps over 90. * It'll dry too fast before it has time to bond with the primer. The actual "working-time" of a top-line paint like that is SECONDS/maybe a MINUTE...if it's too hot outside. It'll just lead to premature film-failure. I work at a C2 retailer... * The people who've used C2's Exterior just LOVE it! * Avg retail is low-to-mid $40's/gal. * Percent Volume Solids avg's. ~ 40%. * Expensive colorants too! A Qt. of the High-strength Yellow equals a dinner-for-two $$... * High-quality binders & colorants are the key to any paints success (along with proper prep & priming). Some are just better than others...! Faron...See MorePlease help me neutralize.
Comments (9)Hi Blue, Best wishes for DH! If I was in your paint-situation now... 1) Prime all areas to White...99% of primers are anyway!! 2) Because your new colors will be lighter, white untinted primer will give the best "hide" over those deep colors. 3) However, you wouldn't be wrong to tint toward the final color. Most white primers can take 2 oz's. of colorant. 4) When priming Living-room, Bedroom & Bath...apply GOOD, FULL coats!! I fully re-load roller 4 times in a 8'-tall x 3'-wide column. 5) Same for the paint coat(s)...2 FULL coats for absolute best look. >>> HOWEVER, because you're selling....if your primecoat is full & even, AND your 1st paintcoat is done well, you can stop here. >>> If I could only apply 2 coats on a wall: I'd do one tinted primecoat & 1 paintcoat!! Comments (15)If a bluish-green probably a green undertone will work. It sounds like it is still a warmer color. Again, take a look at Hazelnut Cream (Behr). It will look neutral but certain situations will bring out the green undertone which is very subtle. You can get the little sample cans and try it out on some poster board. The little paint chip can look so different - I think the HC chip makes it look darker than it is. We have Hazelnut Cream in the kitchen (south facing) and a north facing room and it works in both which is why the green undertone I am seeing in the other room was a surprise. It stands out compared to the carpet so it isn't an ugly color that I am seeing, it just in this one room that undertone clashes with the carpet....See MoreRelated Professionals
