What style is this 1924 home?

I am posting a picture of our 1924 home. We are located in Missouri and most of the homes in our neighborhood are Craftsman or Colonial. None of the homes are similar to ours. Is our home cottage style? We are hoping to get more information on our home style to assist us in choosing an appropriate fireplace mantle to replace the hideous 1970's fireplace.

You could call it a bungalow if you want or a Craftsman. It has some Craftsman features although that chimney on the front appears to have been inspired by some English Arts and Crafts homes. Here in the SF Bay area people would just call it a Craftsman.

If that nice house were mine I'd be looking into a nice Craftsman style fireplace surround. Those go well in any Arts and Crafts style home.

It's a blend. I look at it and see some Craftsman, Colonial and Storybook influences.
I'd call it a "charming bungalow".
The nice thing about blended style houses is that, when adding or replacing missing elements, you can go in several different directions. The main question would just be, does it look good?

Desertsteph, that's an interesting idea about a second door directly from the master bedroom. One hangup might be the fact that our upstairs only has a seven foot ceiling height throughout (very standard for our vintage bungalow). Right where the back wall of the unfinished bedroom is it starts sloping down into the attic space. I don't think we would have the headspace for a door on the east side of the new gable, and we would have to widen the gable quite a bit to put a door where the attic door is planned and have it enter the bathroom. But I'll look at a carefully and make sure there isn't a way to squeeze it in. The changing tables say they are 37" tall, but I think that's to the top of the (removeable) rails, so the actual top may be 34" or 35". KMCG, I hadn't thought of kitchen cabinets as vanities. They are certainly easier to find used or discounted than bath vanities. Great price on the pieces you found! I'll keep my eyes out if we decide on a large single vanity or the changing tables don't work out. Hollysprings, I respect your ability to think outside the box. However, we really like our house as it is, other than the bathroom situation. It will only take a few LVL beams to support the gable on the loadbearing walls below; cantilevering adds nothing but a little length to those beams. I can't see how a much larger shed roof dormer would cost less or be simpler. Maybe I'm not understanding the situation, but it seems as though reframing the entire back side of the house, reroofing, exterior sheathing and siding, subfloor and flooring, all would be significantly more in quantity than what we are currently planning.

Are you saying that you want to fence both your front and back yards? I would not fence the front yard at all. To me, that communicates a very unfriendly neighbor. Just start the fence at the back of your house, where it's needed to meet pool requirements. Looking up your driveway, I would build 2 red brick posts and run a working gate between the posts, for car access. I'd incorporate wood and iron in the gate. Around the back yard, I think a wrought iron fence would look the best; however, given that you really want the privacy, I'd go with a cedar 6 ft fence and then stain it so that it retains color and doesn't grey. I wouldn't do a white fence at all.

Thanks Patricia, I love your point! I posted the wrong picture, Im attaching the right one here. So the huge stairs in the picture will be removed. As to what you mentioned about too much going on in the back and the back doesn’t match the front of the house I agree, the last owner messed up the house, thats why I want to make sure I dont do the same. So besides this deck that needs to be remodel ( the existing deck is of master bedroom we also need access to the back (pool area) and we would like to have a deck right of the kitchen that we could have breakfast and sit at night. So to minimize the look, I think using glass panels could be a cleaner look. Im opened to all suggestions and ideas. Have a good one.

Thank you all so much for these comments. Beyond helpful already. There is a tiny part of our house that the previous owner never finished shingling. It is exactly that dark, dark brown so may have been the original siding - fascinating about the motor oil! It just looks very dark and "old" now so the more I read these notes the more I think a change with some kind of natural color would be a good shift ...

Thanks for the feedback... the house is not what I have always considered Craftsman, (I'm jealous of my neighbors with those great covered porches and built-ins) but you all have encouraged me to look further into it...I'd love to find pictures of homes similar to mine. We have owned the home for about 3 years and have been trying to figure out how to classify it. By the way, out of curiousity, what features on the home are characteristic of Craftsman homes, colonial homes, etc?

I'm not saying that your home is a kit house, but you will find some that are like yours by looking at the old Aladdin and Sears catalogues of the homes that they offered in the 20's.

Thanks- I requested a copy of the book at my library and spent time on the websites suggested... I found the Aladdin site particularly interesting. There are few homes with the chimney on the front, but I'll keep looking.

There are Craftsman Style houses as defined by real estate salespeople which are generally California Bungalows and there are houses built according to the ideas championed by Gustav Stickley as evidenced by the designs he published in The Craftsman magazine in keeping with the Arts & Crafts Movement. Take your pick.

Sometimes it's hard to classify a house as being in a style category. Vernacular architecture picks up ideas from all over the place. Is it really important to you to be able to fit it into a category?
