What style of fence to choose for a brick Georigan Style house?

Hello - I know this is not a fence forum, but I knew you decorators could give me good feedback! Last summer I hung out at the kitchen forum, as I gutted my kitchen and redid it, and now this summer we're putting in a pool, so I hang out at the pool forum mostly! I'd love your advice, please, because I'm stuck about the fence. I have a very traditional red brick Georgian style house. It's a two-story with black shutters, and white trim, and a white wood railing at the steps leading to the front door. So while you see mostly brick from the front, you do see some white trim and dental molding at the top, along the brick edge.(I would post a photo, it would do it much more justice, but I'm very impaired in that dept. - lol!) So, here's my dilemma: ideally I think this style house would look best with a black rod iron fence, but I want privacy. My pool is having to be built right where my driveway ends (due to septic lines, etc.) Thus, I don't want people to see straight into the pool area when they drive by our house. And eventually, the pool itself will have the black rod iron fence enclosing it. I have priced 6ft privacy, wooden fences and I'm fine with that on 3/4 of the yard, but I think the front needs something more formal. Can you paint just the front fence white and leave the other 3 sides wood? I've looked at scalloped edges, inverted scallop, straight edges with finial/ball type posts, etc. Do you think a white fence looks to casual for a brick Georgian? I keep googling fence photos, but most are cottage style homes with white picket fences. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for reading :)

I vote for a board-on-board style with a straight top edged with top moldings -- and a VERY nice gate with a rounded top and a small black iron grill window.

Privacy --- but elegant too!

And don't forget to add boxwood edging around the perimater! Again -- very suitable for your house style!

What Graywings said! Check out Echelon, you can get 8' lengths that are designed to give a little for grading differences. It is also very easy for a DIY and excellent quality . I have personally had that fencing and highly recommend. Large expanses of white fencing only look good on a horse farm estate.

Well, we ordered our coach lights today. We will soon order some for the back of the house. Here is what we chose. I appreciate the assistance given. The one below is for the front of the house. It is in oil rubbed bronze -- much browner than in the picture. We ordered two larger ones to go beside the front door, and 3 medium ones (2 on either side of garage door, an one at the garage man door). We concluded that we need coach lights that did not extend too far (not deep ones), so we had to go a different direction. These lights have built in LED lights. The lights are made by Artcraft. Here is the ones we are ordering for the back of the house. There are 4 total along the back which is all one plane (not jogs out).

I brought the lot for the privacy. There will be neighbors on one side but not the other. It is a deep lot so no neighbors even close to being seen behind and across the street there are no homes though i intend to build deeper into the lot and keep a large number of trees in the front. On the street there are 3 bigger craftsman style homes, a couple of smaller ranchers, an old brick cottage with detached guest house, 2 BIG 3 level homes on stilts and a small farm with a barn, veggies and even a couple of goats. I also brought it because it has a community pier and gazebo so I have access to the ICWW. The architectural diversity appealed to me as everything is so cookie cutter in most neighborhoods. I am looking for a home I can live in alone comfortably because I am sure in a few more years neither child will be living with me. I live simply. I don't entertain other than a couple of friends and when we do it is simple tapas food with a glass of wine sitting on the deck or the screen porch. The lot will be kept wooded except for a small area of lawn and plants surrounding the house. I don't need or want a big house and I guess that is why the home I posted above appeals to me, it looks compact and manageable. I do need bedrooms for when the kids and their friends come visit and right now I would like room for the one still at home to have his own space, but achieving that without building big. For example: To be honest most of the styles of homes that I have saved may be considered small (footprint) for the lot. The following would be ideal with the addition of a den/away room, mudroom/laundry, large 3 season room or screen porch and downstairs master bedroom & bathroom.

I'd call it Tudor, but its probably more accurately a storybook cottage. Whatever you want to call it, what a neat house. It's adorable! I'd prefer a light stucco with dark trim. It's just what looks right to me. The green you have now reminds me a little of the green used in the brick and timber frame farmhouses in northern Germany. Are you saying that you want to fence both your front and back yards? I would not fence the front yard at all. To me, that communicates a very unfriendly neighbor. Just start the fence at the back of your house, where it's needed to meet pool requirements. Looking up your driveway, I would build 2 red brick posts and run a working gate between the posts, for car access. I'd incorporate wood and iron in the gate. Around the back yard, I think a wrought iron fence would look the best; however, given that you really want the privacy, I'd go with a cedar 6 ft fence and then stain it so that it retains color and doesn't grey. I wouldn't do a white fence at all.

I would go with a black aluminum fence that will not rust, and plant english ivy or confederate jasmine on it to create a "living wall" effect. The ivy would be very appropriate to your style of home. It would require periodic trimming, but would fill in to afford you as much privacy as a wood fence. If you are going to have a wood fence at all I would definitely paint the entire thing white, or go with a non-shiny white vinyl that looks more like wood and is maintenance-free.

Thanks for the replies! And just to clarify, I'm only fencing in the back yard -- not the front. I'm just concerned about the front fencing being formal enough, and the style appropriate for my house. I love your ideas! I'm off to look at some of the links you all provided. Thanks for the help! :)

I would have brick columns with forged steel pickets and gate on the front sides and whatever you want in the back. You could plant shrubs behind the pickets for more privacy if you want.

I vote for black wrought iron look & planting shubbery for privacy. I just don't think a wood fence is the right style for your home.

Go with the white fence it will look fabulous. There are so many styles to choose from. It will be a good look on the Georgian style home.

Driving through Ct. you will see many $$$$ homes with stone walls which have white wooden fences atop...a wonderful look IMO. Many are on properties with Georgian houses. Of course, stone is easy to come by in that region, and more expensive elsewhere.
