Family Room Furniture Layout Help

I would love to get some help on how to make my family room work a little better!! Right now, here is what it looks like....

loveseat splits up family room and kitchen....

My husband won a flat screen tv from work and we need to do something different as far as what we put the tv on. It won't fit in the entertainment center my dh built. I was thinking we could maybe put the tv in the corner next to the fireplace?? Then I could put the loveseat next to it on the green wall. It would be nice not to have the loveseat splitting up the space between the family room and kitchen - it would open things up more, but would it work??

Any other ideas?? We are getting a bigger rug for the space and will have to get something to put the flat screen on, so I am shopping around for that.

Congrats on winning the TV! What a coup! It's hard to tell how big the room is, but the love seat seems to crowd it. Do you have another room to put the loveseat in and put a couple of chairs w/an end table in it's place?

Putting the TV and loveseat near the fireplace would be crowded. I also wouldn't put a TV anywhere near a FP, it's the Girl Scout in me. lol.

The flat screen TV will help with the crowding situation, but I still think that your furniture is too big for this room. Finding another spot in the house for the loveseat may be the best idea. Some smaller chairs would work better, and allow for more floor space.

I would be looking for a narrow cabinet or table to set the TV on, with a shelf or storage underneath, and still keep it on the wall where the TV amoire is now.

Thank you for all your suggestions! All were great ideas! So this is what Im going to try. Leave the current setup in front of the TV and just bring the sofa in a bit more to make space for sofa table and then creating another seating area with 2 chairs flanking the fireplace. Also move the chaise near the bar with a floor lamp. Perfect! One last question, should i place a small rug in front of the fireplace area( maybe a round one) or leave it?

I like your current arrangement. For more seating, you can use two longer sofas in the same arrangement. Or a sofa with two chairs as you have it but without the ottomans. That leaves room for a backless bench type of seating to face into the conversation area that wouldn't interfere with the TV. With any options, your seating area is rectangular, so a rug would be fine to use. You may have room for a narrow console table behind the sofa facing the tv, if you place a sofa there.

You are well on your way. I really like option number two, the green floorplan. I would only add an extra end table on the other side of the couch directly facing the fireplace, turn the dining table so that it is perpendicular to the sliding doors (if there is room) and go with a island that is not curved. But that floor plan makes great use of the space. Opt for long horizontal floating shelves over a cabinet by your dining are as pictured in the other floor plans for a more contemporary/modern look if that is what you are going for.

How many people watch tv in this room? I would put the TV where the chair is first. Then I would take one of the couches out and put two swivel chairs in its place. A table with lamp on it could be between the two chairs. Or put a couch facing the TV with two chairs in front of the window. A floor lamp at the end of your couch would be useful. With TV on the longer wall, you could get a longer TV console and put a tall plant on the side next to the door, If you use a recliner couch, you really can't use a coffee table or ottoman and since your room is smallish, I would use only end tables and keep the center of the room open since it has two entryways. The chair you have could be where the TV was in the picture....a good place for the floor lamp beside it. If you wanted to watch TV comfortably from the couch and two swivel chairs, you could get a corner console and put your TV there. Lots of possibilities,

How close to the dining room is the love seat, can it be moved further back to open up the room more? Also I think that the drapes seem to make the couch look bigger. Could you take off the tiebacks and extend the drapes beyond the outer edge so they look wider and let them hang straight down? That would help with finding a little more balance. I think, when you remove the entertainment center, that the room will look more cohesive. Try to find a tv. table that is narrow so as to keep the space open. I'd remove the rug, it's too small for the space and, if you were ever to replace it, how about a lighter shade and trade out the pillows to match the lightest part of the rug. I can understand how you'd want to keep your couches. After all, we have to live comfortably. Is your dining room table a rectangle? If so, could it be moved in the other direction so you could have a more spacious feeling? Just some suggestions, I'm sure you'll get lots more.

I agree with yayagal about the rug & pillows. Can't see the fireplace that good, but can you put the new flat screen on the wall above the fireplace? If your new tv is the new plasma thin type.
