I have a MAD (and constipated) cat...

Without too many details, had to take Ara to the vet this afternoon. Out of the possible outcomes, I will gladly take constipation, LOL. She has two medications- one once a day and one twice a day. The early morning dose will NOT be fun. Anyone want to spend a week or so with me?

The vet also recommended a cat sitter for the next time we go out of town. Usually my neighbor does it but I hate asking her all the time and she may be moving later this year.

How do you get a mad & constipated cat? Give a constipated cat an enema!!! LOL, sadly I know that first hand......our Poppy has 'issues' so he gets dosed with 5 ml of mineral oil every week or so.

Carolyn, Why don't laelias bloom for you? but catts bloom for you, right? I will def. check out those SA vendors per your suggestion, thanks... I've been so bad, all your talks about "other plants" make me feel a little guilty! I don't "look" at anything except for orchids now... I've been trying to stop myself for hitting that "submit" button at growers' sites. I kept telling myself this is my first winter with the 'chids, let's see if I could get thru without a problem... but if CJ can have a "winter fix", then we all deserve to have at least a fix or two, right??? Oh, Michigoose, I would go back to Trader Joe's, look at it this way, you know how lucky you are to be able to buy orchids at local stores? I certainly don't get that luxury... lol...

Another thing, you don't want to trap the cat and have it confined in the trap for several days. I would only try to trap the cat on the day before you can bring it into the vet. So not at all on a Saturday, but Sunday afternoon or evening would be better because then the animal is only confined overnight. Keep him or her covered and quiet. It may take a few days of putting out food before she goes into the trap. If you can place it where you can watch it's better. Then you'll know who is going in there. Pick the food up before dark, though, unless the cat only comes after dark. If that is the case you may catch a raccoon overnight and be careful releasing that. You may even catch a different cat. That is another dilemma! It happened to me, and I also caught a raccoon by accident when I was trapping at night. It's interesting that some cats only show up at night, and even in the middle of the night, and some come to eat during the day. My female feral (I named her Fanny) comes during the day.

Hi Everyone, Thank you for the responses, suggestions, and advice. laurief - I found the links you sent to be very informative and helpful, thank you. So, as an update over the past few days... following my last post on Monday, I cleaned the litter-boxes and found that her stool had become more liquidy. I had been informed that if this happened, we would want to lower the dosage. Neither of the vets I had spoken to before was in, but it was recommended that I lower the dose and skip that night, and give her 2 doses the next day and that the nighttime vet I'd been in contact with previously (the one who initially saw and treated her) would call me the following evening. Her stool was liquidy again yesterday, so upon talking with the emergency night vet, we have lowered the dose further to 1 time per day, and as of today stool was back to normal. If this continues, the intent is to lower the dose further on Saturday to every other day, and take her off of it completely within the next week. (YAY!) I asked about the pumpkin, and the vet said that she has never tried this herself, but has heard of it working well and thought it was a good idea for me to try. I have also increased her canned food amount over the past couple days so that she is gettig some every day rather than as an occassional "treat." I have tried the Wellness before, as well as others, but since switching her to Innova she won't touch anything else, so I don't think a complete change in diet is an option right now. But I am going to cut back on the dry food and increase the wet food and try the pumpkin and see how she does. My cats are essentially my kids. They even have health insurance that rivals my own... so I'm going to try whatever I can to get her back to her regular old self!

trancegemini_wa, I think it's abundantly clear that you're one of the people who feel that they're entitled to let their cats roam where ever they want and to let them do what ever they want, no matter how they and you, by allowing it, infringe on other people and animals. Cats killing wildlife isn't the ONLY problem. They drive other people's pets crazy, they destroy plants, they crap all over walk ways, they kill people's chickens and aviary birds, amongst other problems. Then, there are a bunch of dangers that the cats face themselves, coyotes, dogs, poison, cars, disease, trigger happy kids and sickos, etc. The list goes on and on. Being turned into the SPCA would be a far better fate than being neglected by their owners like they are now. Better being adopted into a new home with an owner who cares than being found run over at the side of the road. My local SPCA is a no kill facility. Please tell me why a no kill facility would lie and kill cats that I bring them? I'm confused why you assumed that they'd kill the cats. And if people don't want their cats to be trapped and taken to the SPCA or the Humane Society or high kill shelters, then they wouldn't allow them to roam where ever they please. It's my property. They're lucky that I'm not sicking my dog on them, which would be my right but it's not the cat's fault, it's the owners and so the cats shouldn't have to be the ones to suffer. But cats are suffering. Do I need to keep a running tally of all the ones I see run over and brought into veterinary hospitals for unnecessary and totally avoidable maladies that don't happen to indoor cats?

She was shooting me daggers while at the vet- even the dogs waiting to be seen were afraid of her, LOL. She just curled up in my lap and is purring at the minute. She has taken her laxative- a hairball medication but I still have to give her the antacid- that one take a syringe and has to be given twice a day. 6:00 tomorrow morning should be "fun".

Every time Elmo gets near her, his gets a whiff of the vet and hisses and growls at her. Poor Stewie just tried to eat while she was eating and she swatted the heck out of him- guess she thought it was Elmo.

Her being constipated explains why she has been smelling "poopy" the past week or two- I just figured she was gassy or something. Never had a constipated cat before but Stewie farts every time you pick him up, LOL.

She must be in total misery the poor thing!
When you talk about syringe, you mean just some liquid that you squirt into her mouth? If that's the case, just slip the syringe in at the side of her mouth and squirt it, instead of trying to pry her mouth open at the front.

I wish my cats would eat the hairball ointment stuff. They all hate it, but they certainly cough up logs of hair.

Jasdip, yes that is the kind. I waited until she was asleep- she had a rude awakening but I got it down her. 2.5cc is a LOT of liquid for a squirming cat!

Janie, who is REALLY looking forward to Eric getting home- he can do this!

Try Vaseline fro the cats. mine like it as much as a cat treat (and the off brand is cheap). I keep it spread on the container lid and they lick it off when they walk by. Kind of gross but it REALLY helps with the hair balls. Just make sure you do NOT get the baby powder scented kind- they didn't like that one, LOL

Janie, try swaddling Ara in a towel in the morning, that'll confuse her enough that you can dose her before she gets out.

Poor Stewie, he toots all the time? Remind me not to pick him and squeeze him hard!

Did Ara do something she shouldn't have last weekend? Is that why she's plugged up? Poor girl. I hope she does a nice big you-know-what real soon!

I am wearing a little of the medicine and I left her this morning licking her saturated face. Most of it went down. Not sure how it will go tonight!

Flamingo, Stewie mostly farts on Eric because Eric likes to pick on him but yes he is a literal stinker, LOL
