There's a hardware store in my historic neighborhood where a lot of us buy paint, and they have some practice knowing what looks good. I wouldn't do this at a local Home Depot or Lowe's (although your mileage may vary), but if you have an independent store or a locally-owned Ace Hardware, you might get some help there.

Or get to know your neighbors by knocking on a few beautifully-coordinated doors!

Don't worry about what color will best hide your dents and flaws. No one will see them from the street. No one will see them from the walk unless they are rude enough to look for them.
I went back to look at your original posting. You have good color sense, so just go with it. I do the same thing, I agonize about my decision, then in the end I wind up doing what my instict told me to do in the first place.

I think I would do one of two things:
--leave it black and white, but paint the door a nice bright red for contrast and add four black shutters to the downstairs windows for more visual interest.
OR
--paint the house a medium/dark gray, leave trim white and keep black shutters. Heck, the red door still would look good in that combination.

Something traditional for a colonial--not the colors of Victorian houses--would look odd.

Ok- Here are some color combos I came up with. I am trying to avoid white...too plain for me. I would like some honesty here please. If you think any look awful, please tell me. I will not be offended. Keep in mind we plan on adding a brick porch in the front with covered roof like in the link below.

I don't care for the last dark one.
The middle one in light gray looks nice.
The first one in yellow.....hm. reminds me of my house...creamy yellow, red doors..except I feel the shutters would be better in a hunter or forest green. I know, combo has been done a lot, but it just plain looks nice. I don't have shutters.
